Stolje}ima su ljudi na ovom otoku `ivjeli na<br />

dragome i prokletom kamenu u okamenjenosti `ivotnih<br />

oblika, ili se iseljavali “trbuhom za kruhom”, ali uvijek<br />

mislima, du{om i srcem u zavi~aju, njeguju}i svoj<br />

identitet, svoju glagoljicu i svoj jezik, svoju meku<br />

~akav{tinu svoj CA, ^E, ^O, ^A. @ivjelo se na otoku od<br />

marljivosti i skromnosti - od topline ognji{ta, porcioni}a,<br />

palente, slane sardele, suhe smokve, korice<br />

kruha, komadi}a sira i gutljaja vina, a svetkovalo se<br />

poga~om, {urlicama s zvacetom od janjetine i presnecom,<br />

kola~em od mladoga sira uvijek s “BOGU<br />

HVALA” na ustima, u vjeri i nadi da se za sve prima<br />

pla}a na onom svijetu.<br />

Iako i danas `ive neki drevni obi~aji tu se svakodnevno<br />

ra|aju navje{taji novoga. Pomalo dogorijeva<br />

“na{a starina” {to su je intenzivno rasplamsavali<br />

na{i stari okupljeni oko ognji{ta uz bukaletu vina,<br />

nadahnuti kr{}anskim osje}ajima i pro`eti ostacima<br />

starih poganskih rituala, mitova i legendi ~ije se<br />

izvorno zna~enje izgubilo u hodu vremena. Katkad se i<br />

danas, od Jurjeva do Miholje i od Miholje do Jurjeva,<br />

onih ~vrstih okosnica reda u godini kada po~inje<br />

bu|enje prirode i “mlada pa{a” pa do berbe gro`|a,<br />

smokava i svega {to dozrjeva u zenitu godi{njeg ciklusa,<br />

izvla~i iz {krinja bogatstvo narodnih no{nji i<br />

zatanca uz zvuk sopela. Na smotrama folklora,<br />

pirovima i pu~kim fe{tama: Razgonu, Stomorini, Kolejanima<br />

i ma{karama ili na drugim svetkovinama od<br />

Antonje, Ivanje, Polinareve, Stipanje, Lovre~eve, Male i<br />

Velike Gospe do Andrijine Kr~ani }e i zakantati u dvoglasju<br />

“po doma}u, na tanko i debelo”, zanosno<br />

iskazuju}i i njeguju}i iskonsko nadahnu}e i radost<br />

`ivljenja.<br />

Kr~ani su oduvijek bili poznati kao radi{ni ljudi,<br />

ali i po tome {to vole dru{tveni `ivot. Jo{ i danas u<br />

nekim mjestima na Krku gaji se stara tradicija tanca<br />

pod oki}enim majem, {to je, vjerojatno, sa~uvani dio<br />

starog obi~aja primanja mladih u `ivot prema dobnim<br />

skupinama. Pred zoru u o~i prve nedjelje mjeseca maja<br />

mladi}i djevojkama tajom nose maj, zelenu granu ili<br />

na placi, trgu postave posje~eno razlistalo mlado drvo.<br />

Nekada bi bili pozvani u ku}u djevojke na pr{ut, sir i<br />

vino, kao na “fraj”. Vrijeme “fraja” bilo je uglavnom<br />

pred Bo`i} u Adventu. To je bila prilika da u prijatnom<br />

dru{tvu uz ne{to jela, pi}a i {ale provedu vrijeme<br />

i da mladi} najavi svoje ozbiljne namjere djevojci,<br />

roditeljima i okolini.<br />

For centuries, the people on this island have lived<br />

on the dear and damned rock among the fossilized life<br />

forms, or they have emigrated in search of a better life,<br />

but always keeping their thoughts, souls and hearts<br />

at home, nurturing their identity, their Glagolitic<br />

alphabet and their language, their soft Chakavian,<br />

their CA, ^E, ^O and ^A. The people on the island<br />

lived on hard work and modesty, on the warmth of<br />

the hearth, morsels, polenta, salt anchovies, dried figs,<br />

bread crust, a slice of cheese and a sip of wine, and<br />

celebrated with cake, pasta with lamb stew and presnec,<br />

a cheesecake, always with “THANK GOD” on<br />

their lips, in the belief and hope that reward for everything<br />

is received on the other world.<br />

Although some of the ancient customs have survived<br />

to this day, the new ones are announced every<br />

day. “Our old times,” the flame of which was intensely<br />

fanned by our predecessors gathered around the<br />

hearth with a mug of wine, inspired by Christian feelings<br />

and imbued with the remnants of old pagan rituals,<br />

myths and legends whose original meaning was<br />

lost in the passage of time, are slowly burning out.<br />

Even today sometimes, from St. George’s day to<br />

Michaelmas and from Michaelmas to St. George’s day,<br />

those solid pillars of order of a year when the awakening<br />

of the nature and grazing begin until the harvest<br />

of grapes, figs and everything else which matures in<br />

the zenith of the annual cycle, the residents pull out of<br />

the trunks the wealth of folk costumes and dance to<br />

the sound of sopelas, the long flute. At folklore festivals,<br />

weddings, and folk feasts, Razgon, Stomorina,<br />

Kolejani and the carnival or other celebrations from<br />

St. Anthony’s day, Midsummer, St. Apolinnaire’s day,<br />

St. Stephen’s day, St. Lawrence’s day, Nativity of the<br />

Virgin Mary and the Feast of the Assumption to St.<br />

Andrew’s day, the residents of Krk will sing in two<br />

voices, “the local way, thickly and thinly,” captivatingly<br />

expressing and cherishing the true inspiration<br />

and joy of living.<br />

The people of Krk have always been known as diligent<br />

people, but also as company loving. Even today in<br />

some towns on the island the old tradition of dancing<br />

under a decorated maj, a young leafed tree, is nurtured<br />

and it is probably a preserved aspect of an old custom<br />

of accepting young people into life based on age groups.<br />

At dawn, on the eve of the first Sunday of the month of<br />

May, young men surreptitiously bring the maj to<br />

young women, or on the square stand up a cut leafed<br />

young tree. Once upon a time, they used to be invited<br />

into the house of the girl for some prosciutto, cheese and<br />

wine, as if it were a fraj, a party. The time for the fraj<br />

was mostly during Advent before Christmas. This provided<br />

an opportunity for the young couple to spend<br />

some time in pleasant company, with some food, drinks<br />

and humor, and for the young man to announce his<br />

serious intentions to the young woman, the parents and<br />

the community. Around New Year is the time of carols<br />

when the carolers make the rounds of the houses, collect<br />

presents and sing old ritual songs to wish good fortune<br />

to the members of the household. This ancient folk custom<br />

of well wishing, collecting gifts and common feasting<br />

has been best preserved in Omi{alj and Duba{nica.<br />
