Bo`je, vatrenog Dalmatinca sv. Jeronima. [tovanom i<br />
~a{}enom Jerolimu na otoku Krku pripalo je istaknuto<br />
mjesto na glavnim oltarima glagolja{kih crkava na<br />
Ko{ljunu u Vrbniku i Omi{lju. O zna~enju svetojeronimske<br />
tradicije me|u Hrvatima svjedo~i od 15. stolje}a<br />
i hrvatska crkva Sv. Jeronima u Vje~nom Gradu.<br />
A ~uvena vatikanska knji`nica ukra{ena je freskama<br />
na kojima su prikazani tvorci svjetskih pisama gdje je<br />
sv. Jeronim prikazan kao autor glagoljice tj. ilirskog<br />
pisma, odnosno pisma sv. Jeronima - Littera<br />
Hieronymiana.<br />
Uvjerenje da glagolja{i imaju svoje pismo jo{ od<br />
velikog i ~udesnog crkvenog oca, sv. Jeronima<br />
prihva}ao je i Rim, kako svjedo~i pismo kojim papa<br />
Inocent IV. senjskom biskupu Filipu 1248. godine<br />
odobrava glagoljsko bogoslu`je rije~ima: ”Imaju}i na<br />
umu da je jezik podre|en stvari, a ne stvari jeziku, pa<br />
ovim ti podjeljujemo vlast da u onim krajevima, u<br />
kojima je obi~aj, tako ~ini{ bogoslu`je, ali samo ako se<br />
smisao poradi razlike pisma ne vrije|a.”<br />
Odobravaju}i staroslavensku liturgiju, Inocent IV.<br />
nagla{ava da “in Sclavonia” - u Slavoniji tj. u<br />
Hrvatskoj postoji osobito pismo za koje doma}e<br />
sve}enstvo tvrdi kako ga ima jo{ od bla`enog Jeronima.<br />
Za prou~avanje glagoljske ostav{tine osobito je<br />
zna~ajan podatak da je ~etiri godine poslije isti papa<br />
Inocent IV. 1252. odobrio i benediktincima u Omi{lju<br />
da se u bogoslu`ju slu`e crkvenoslavenskim odnosno<br />
materinjim jezikom i glagoljskim pismom. Dok se u<br />
Kr~koj katedrali misilo na latinskom i pjevalo GLORIA<br />
IN EXCELSIS DEO u crkvama po ostalim ka{telima na<br />
otoku Hrvati cijelo jedno tisu}lje}e sudjeluju u<br />
crkvenoslavenskom bogoslu`ju i pjevaju SLAVA VA<br />
VI[NJEH BOGU, a bogo{tovne knjige pi{u ki}enom<br />
glagoljicom, ukra{avaju}i razigrane inicijale `ivim<br />
bojama.<br />
Hrvatska danas ima najbogatiju glagolja{ku<br />
ba{tinu u svijetu, a najbrojniji i najstariji glagoljski<br />
zapisi koncentrirani su na sjevernom Jadranu, na<br />
kvarnerskim otocima, u Istri, a osobito na otoku Krku.<br />
Znameniti slavist Vatroslav Jagi} s pravom je svojevremeno<br />
konstatirao: otok Krk je matica glagolja{a.<br />

Jerome. The importance<br />
of the tradition of St. Jerome among the Croats is<br />
proved also by the existence of the Croatian church of<br />
St. Jerome in the Eternal City since the 15 th century.<br />
The famous Vatican library is adorned with frescos<br />
depicting the creators of the world alphabets, among<br />
them St. Jerome portrayed as the author of the<br />
Glagolitic, that is Illyrian or alphabet of St. Jerome –<br />
Littera Hieronymiana.<br />
The conviction that the Glagolitic priests had had<br />
their alphabet ever since the great and miraculous<br />
father St. Jerome was also accepted by Rome, as is<br />
proved in the letter in which Pope Innocent IV<br />
approved the Glagolitic service to Bishop Phillip from<br />
Senj in 1248. “Keeping in mind that language is subordinate<br />
to things and not things to language, we<br />
hereby grant you the authority in those regions in<br />
which thus is custom, thusly to hold the service, but<br />
only if the meaning because of the difference in the<br />
alphabet is not offended,” he stated. Approving the<br />
Old Slavonic liturgy, Innocent IV stressed that “in<br />
Sclavonia” - in Slavonia, that is in Croatia, there<br />
existed a particular alphabet of which the local clergy<br />
claimed that it had had it ever since blessed Jerome. It<br />
is of particular significance for the study of the<br />
Glagolitic legacy the fact that four years later the<br />
same pope, Innocent IV, approved in 1252 that the<br />
Benedictines in Omi{alj during service use the Church<br />
Slavonic which meant the mother tongue and the<br />
Glagolitic alphabet. While in the Krk cathedral it was<br />
thought in Latin and sung GLORIA IN EXCELSIS<br />
DEO, in other churches on the island the Croats had<br />
for an entire millennium taken part in Church Slavonic<br />
service and sung SLAVA VA VI[NJEH BOGU and the<br />
devotional books were written in ornate Glagolitic,<br />
decorating the playful initials in vivid colors.<br />
Croatia today boasts the richest Glagolitic legacy<br />
in the world, the most numerous and earliest<br />
Glagolitic records being concentrated on the northern<br />
Adriatic, the Kvarner islands, in Istria, and particularly<br />
on the island of Krk. The renowned Slavicist,<br />
Vatroslav Jagi}, had quite rightly once stated that the<br />
island of Krk was the hotbed of the Glagolitic.<br />
