motor management

CONTACTRON –
Solid-state contactors and
motor management
Maximum availability and optimal productivity
are preconditions for the competitiveness of
an industrial system. The short cycle times
required for this and optimal maintenance
cycles can often no longer be realized by
conventional motor control systems with
mechanical contactors.
CONTACTRON solid-state contactors from
Phoenix Contact are the durable and costsaving
alternative to contactor technology.
CONTACTRON power electronics are used
everywhere where frequent, reliable and
wear-free switching is demanded.
CONTACTRON –
Added value for your system
1. Solid-state contactors switch quickly and
wear-free – that lowers maintenance costs
and increases productivity.
2. The motor manager has overload and
underload detection in one device. That not
only protects the motor, but also the system
– without complex sensor systems.
3. Motor managers and solid-state contactors
can be ideally combined to form fast, costsaving
and durable motor controls – if
necessary, also with a fieldbus connection.
Fast and wear-free
switching
The advantages of the CONTACTRON
ELR 1 and ELR 3 solid-state contactor
series are ruggedness, long-term
stable switching times and a practically
unlimited service life, otherwise not
achieved by mechanical contactors.
This makes it ideal for applications with
high switching frequencies, such as heating
controls, lighting systems and controlling of
1- and 3-phase motors up to 18.5 kW.
Lighting control system
Solid-state contactors provide the high switching
frequencies and highly precise switching times
required for professional lighting systems.
4 PHOENIX CONTACT
Plastic injection molding systems
High production quality for plastic injection
molding requires a constant temperature in the
heating zones and exact regulation by means
of frequent switching on and off. Solid-state
contactors can fulfill this switching task reliably
and long-term.

Solid-state contactors offer many
advantages
Solid-state contactors switch wear-free –
that lowers maintenance costs.
Productivity increased by short and stable switching
times.
Solid-state contactors are suitable
for use in harsh environments.
Long service life and built-in
protective circuit prevent
downtime.
Solid-state contactors can be
directly controlled by the PLC.
Machine tools
The space-saving “4 in 1” solid-state reversing
contactors are excellently suited for motors
in auxiliary drives, e.g. coolant pumps or chip
conveyors. They are fast, durable and offer
motor protection with an added safety function.
Switching, reversing
and protecting motors
CONTACTRON solid-state reversing
contactors ELR W are a superior alternative
to mechanical contactors due to their
speed, durability and cost efficiency.
The devices switch and reverse motors up
to 18.5 kW. The space-saving solid-state
“4 in 1” reversing contactor for motors up
to 4 kW provides added motor protection
and an emergency stop function.
All ELR Ws can be excellently combined
with the EMM motor manager, which also
protects the valuable system, in addition
to the motor.
Fan
Motors in industrial air-conditioning and ventilation
systems can be switched very well using solidstate
contactors. An additional motor manager
protects the motor and system, e.g. in the event
of blockages or a drive belt breakage.

Monitoring and
protecting systems
and motors
Electric motors often serve as a drive for
valuable system parts, e.g. for actuating
drives or pumps. The CONTACTRON
motor manager EMM uses the drive motor
as a sensor. It constantly monitors its
effective power and all important operating
data. This way, it detects overloads and
underloads, wear or contamination
and reacts by immediately switching off the
motor in the event of malfunctions. Thus, it
ensures indispensable motor protection,
optimizes maintenance intervals and also
protects the system without complex
sensor systems.
Actuating drives
The motor manager reliably protects actuating
and regulating drives from reset failures, and
therefore from mechanical damage.
The adjustable switching and signaling thresholds
optimize the protective function.
Pumps
Dangerous dry running or blockage due to foreign
objects: The motor manager switches the motor
off immediately, reliably protecting the pump
and motor from the consequences of such
malfunctions.
Motor management –
Added value for every system
Motor management not only protects the motor,
but also the system – without complex sensor systems.
The motor manager has overload and underload
detection in one device – if required, also with a
fieldbus connection.
Wear and contamination are detected quickly –
this optimizes the maintenance intervals.
Energy consumption, operating hours and many other
parameters are detected „along
the way“ and are immediately
available.
The motor manager supports
the system documentation and
commissioning by storing data.

Automobile production
System protection and avoidance of downtime
have the highest priority inautomobile production
and make motor management with fieldbus
connections indispensable. Standardized FDT/
DTM software makes the motor manager easy to
configure and use.
Manage motors with
fieldbus connection
In fieldbus environments, too, the
CONTACTRON motor manager EMM
makes intelligent motor management
possible in combination with the PROFIBUS
gateway EM-PB. The configuration,
diagnostics and operating data acquisition
of all connected motor managers are done
via the user-friendly FDT/DTM software.
Every gateway compactly couples up to
32 motor managers to the fieldbus,
providing a cost-efficient and easy-toinstall
solution, especially when there is
more than one monitored motor.
Conveyors
Fast, reliable logistics require the high availability
of all system parts. The motor manager with
PROFIBUS connection not only detects
dangerous blockages, but also wear and
contamination, and therefore ensures optimum
maintenance intervals.
The CONTACTRON motor manager –
System protection needs power
measurement
The most important electric parameter for
your system is the effective motor power.
The CONTACTRON motor manager
constantly monitors it and immediately
detecs overload and underload states of
the motor and the system mechanics.
It gives you an early warning of failures,
reports maintenance requirement and thus
protecting your system.
How does the the CONTACTRON
motor manager protect your system?
A cos guard monitors only the underload
statuses. A motor protection relay monitors
only overload statuses. With the motor
manager you detect all critical load statuses
by measuring the effective motor power.
If necessary it turns off the drive and thus
protects the motor and your valuable system.
PHOENIX CONTACT 9

The CONTACTRON motor manager –
Uses the motor as a sensor and protects
the system
Electric motors often serve as a drive for
valuable system parts, e.g. for pumps or
actuating drives. In addition to the classical
motor protection, there is therefore usually
a considerable amount of effort put into
protecting the system, e.g. with sensors for
the flow rate, torque, etc.
The CONTACTRON motor manager is
the efficient alternative to the complex,
separate motor and system protection.
It uses the drive motor as a sensor by
constantly monitoring the effective power,
thereby providing motor protection, system
protection and operating data acquisition
in one device.
10 PHOENIX CONTACT
Pumps
Pumps can be reliably protected from dangerous dry running
(motor underload) or blockages due to foreign objects
(motor overload) by monitoring the effective power of the
driven motor. The undesirable switch-off of the drive due to
temporary malfunctions (e.g. air bubbles) can be prevented,
however, via adjustable delay times. It is also possible to hide
the motor start-up phase with the high inrush current from
the monitor. Fans can also be monitored, e.g. for drive belt
breakage, in the same manner.
The characteristic curves of the
classical motor protection and of
a cos-phi monitor are not linear,
especially in the important overload/
underload areas, and are hard to use
for system protection due to the
frequent practical overdimensioning
of motors.
Actuating drives
The danger of reset failures, which exists for actuating
and regulating drives, can be reliably avoided by the quick
detection of overloads by the motor manager. When the
overload threshold is exceeded, it ensures an emergency
shutdown of the drive, and can also trigger a reversing pulse,
depending on the settings, which reduces the kinetic energy
of the motor (coasting). This protects the motor and
control valves from serious consequential damage.
The motor manager, on the other
hand, uses the motor as a sensor. The
constantly measured effective power
allows inferences to be made about its
torque and therefore the mechanical
loading of the drive. This way, overloads
and underloads are quickly detected and
the motor and system can be protected
by switching them off in time. Wear and
contamination also change the effective
power, however. These processes can be
monitored by means of freely definable
switching and signaling thresholds and
maintenance requirements can be
signalized in time.
In addition to maintenance optimization,
the motor manager also allows for
extensive operating data acquisition,
Machine tools
The motor manager can also protect the motor and
expensive system parts of machine tools. By means of
correspondingly parameterized power thresholds, a feed
which has been set too high, for example, can be detected
and the drive switched off before the tool breaks.
Signaling thresholds ensure a timely warning when tool wear
increases. The motor manager equally protects auxiliary
drives (e.g. chip conveyors or coolant pumps) and their
Current measurement
Current measurement
The electronic motor management
modules offer all the advantages of modern
effective power monitoring. Every 6.6 ms,
the effective power of a drive system or of
any other 3-phase consumer is calculated
from three currents, voltages and the phase
angle. Currents of up to 16 A can be directly
acquired and currents >16 A are supplied
via external converters. Digital outputs can
be used to control separate mechanical or
electronic switching elements that adopt
the actual switching of the load. In this
configuration, the EMM reliably protects
connected loads – irrespective of their
power consumption – against overload and
underload, and provides permanent status
monitoring.
Up to 8 freely parameterizable switching,
message thresholds and up to four freely
configurable inputs and outputs enable the
protection of electrical drives and the
system.
PROFIBUS gateway for the electronic
motor management modules
The EM-PB-GATEWAY-IFS is a module
that enables a connection of the EMM...IFS
modules to the PROFIBUS-DP.
The module is certified in acc. with the
DPV 1 specification (EN 50170).
The EM-PB-GATEWAY-IFS can
communicate with up to 32 EMM...IFS
modules via the T-BUS. 8 digital inputs and
4 outputs can be freely parameterized.
Moreover, the EM-PB-GATEWAY-IFS
supports Fail Safe: The switching behavior in
the event of PROFIBUS errors can be
influenced by the parameterization. Digital
switching outputs enable direct connection
of the EMM...IFS (forward running/reverse
running).
The “4 in 1” reversing contactor –
No wider than your thumb!
A traditional reversing circuit comprises a
reversing contactor combination and a motor
protection relay. An additional emergency
stop contactor arrangement is also often
necessary to meet mechanical engineering
safety requirements.
All of these functions have been integrated
for motors with an engine power of up
to 4 kW in the new “4 in 1” 22.5 mm
solid-state reversing contactor from the
CONTACTRON product range. Installation
is simplified considerably and a significant
amount of space is saved on the DIN rail.
System availability is maximized by the nearly
wear-free switching ability of the contactors.
CONTACTRON –
Solid-state contactors and
reversing contactors
Solid-state contactors are greatly superior
to mechanical contactors with regard
to switching speed, service life and
ruggedness. Even in dusty or chemically
aggressive atmospheres, they work reliably
with stable switching times. They switch
Ohmic and inductive loads, e.g. in conveying
equipment, lighting systems, temperature
control systems or production machines,
noiselessly and wear-free.
The solid-state contactors from the
CONTACTRON series are available for
1- and 3-phase networks and also offer a
reversing function, depending on the type.
Solid-state contactors offer real advantages:
1. Fast:
High switching frequencies make short cycle
3. Robust:
Immunity to shocks, vibrations and aggressive
ambient conditions allows them to be used in
harsh environments.

CONTACTRON – Power electronics
Single-phase solid-state contactors
Single-phase solid-state contactors are
used in AC voltage networks wherever
silent switching, high switching frequencies
and a practically unlimited service life are
required.
The sturdy power semi-conductors
switch in zero voltage crossing and thus
produce no additional high frequency
interferences. The modules are insensitive
to shock loads and vibrations – even use in
aggressive, polluted environments is
unproblematic.
They offer the following advantages:
– High switching frequency
– wear-free and output-free,
– Input voltage versions 24 V DC and
230 V AC.
