KELABU
Arts & Fiction
Nadia Khan
Senang kalau hidup dalam dunia
hitam putih. Baik-buruk, betul-salah,
cinta-benci, lelaki-perempuan.
Apa jadi pada yang di tengahtengah?
Apa jadi pada orang-orang
macam aku? Bila Jun datang pada
aku, menawarkan posisi sebagai
“boyfriend kontrak”, aku tak tolak.
Salah aku ke kalau aku kata “ya”
pada awek cun? Salah aku ke kalau
aku lagi pandai layan dia daripada
boyfriend dia sendiri? Salah
Bumi Manusia
Bagian Pertama Tetralogi
Pramoedya Ananta Toer
Roman Tetralogi Buru mengambil
latarbelakang dan cikal bakal
nation Indonesia di awal abad ke-
20. Dengan membacanya waktu
kita dibalikkan sedemikian rupa
dan hidup di era membibitnya
pergerakan nasional mula-mula,
juga pertautan rasa, kegamangan
jiwa, percintaan, dan pertarungan
kekuatan anonim para srikandi yang
mengawal penyemaian bangunan
nasional yang kemudian kelak
melahirkan Indonesia modern.
20 Aug 1824, Robert Fullerton has just
been appointed the Governor of the Prince
of Wales Island (Penang) under the British
administration in India. He is intent on
intervening in the affairs of Perak, which
is under the influence of Siam, despite
reservations of the Colonial Office in
London. To achieve his end of persuading
Perak to accept a British Resident for ‘protection’, but
primarily to gain access to its riches, Fullerton condones
privateering, the escalation of piracy in the waters
of the state. The story trails the dark of the Malay
Peninsula involving, politically influential, Malay secret
societies during this period. Indera Sakti was formed in
the sixteenth century, after the defeat of the Malaccan
army by the Portuguese, by soldiers who vowed to
take back the entire peninsula, but currently consists of
“sadistic reptiles who are assassins, pirates and other
undesirables”. Darul Kubra, the other society, was
formed to protect the treasures of Malik Al-Mansur, the
ruler of Beruas who abandoned the city and fled from
the advancing Portuguese. This is historical fiction, a
swashbuckling tale of silat and sorcery, piracy and plunder
and magic.
DUKE
Inspector Mislan & the DUKExpressway
Murders
Rozlan Mohd Noor
A married man and his young women
companion, who are planning to marry
in Thailand shortly, are found dead, with
gunshot wounds, in a car locked from the
inside, on the DUKExpressway leading
out of the city during Ramadan. It looks
like an obvious case of murder-cumsuicide
to all but Inspector Mislan, who is
surprised by the amount of political
interference and pressure he gets to close the case quickly,
and at the attempts to set him up for the fall. Another
great Malaysian crime novel by Rozlan Mohd Noor, with an
ending that will surprise even the most ardent fan of the
genre.
