The Memoirs of P.G. Lim
P.G. Lim
Tan Sri P.G. Lim has led a remarkable
and eventful life at the heart of
Malaysian affairs, as personal friend
and confidante of all of independent
Malaysia’s prime ministers. She
found herself first thrust into the
limelight when in 1953 she undertook
the defence of a young communist
woman who had acted as a
messenger for the Communist Party.
As a young lawyer she confronted
the full British judicial establishment
and made her name by saving the woman’s life.
Thereafter, P.G. plunged into an active life of politics
mixed with her legal activities, often involving cases in
which she acted for trades unions. Her life then took an
unexpected turn as she became involved as a diplomat,
serving successively as Malaysia’s ambassador to the United
Nations, Yugoslavia and Austria, and Brussels and the
European Economic Community.
Her memoirs, which are generously illustrated with
previously unpublished photos, will be essential reading
for those interested in Malaysia’s development since
Independence. - Dato’ Henry S. Barlow
TJ Danaraj
Doctor and Teacher Extraordinaire
Wong Hee Ong
TJ Danaraj dedicated his whole life time
career towards medical education in
Singapore and in Malaysia. After World
War II he joined the teaching staff of
the King Edward College of Medicine
which in 1949 became the Faculty of
Medicine in the University of Malaya in
Singapore. He was elected Dean of the
Faculty in 1960.
In 1963 the newly independent
Malaysia decided to set up its own
medical school as the country was facing an acute shortage
of doctors. TJ Danaraj was the obvious choice. He accepted
the appointment as Foundation Dean as a new challenge.
Not only was the structure of the University of Malaya
Medical Centre completed in record time but the first batch
of doctors graduated in 1969, six years after the decision
was taken to build the medical school. His role in establishing
a second medical school in Saudi Arabia and how he
overcame the difficulties encountered is also described in the
book.
TJ Danaraj fulfilled his life long passion of excellence in
Medical Education to produce doctors of high caliber and left
his mark as the Father of Medical Education in Singapore,
Malaysia and Saudi Arabia.
Membina Bangsa Malaysia
Edited by Aida Idris and Abu Hassan Hasbullah
Hasil kolaborasi enam orang penulis
akademik dan bukan akademik, buku ini
merupakan suatu usaha untuk mengupas
cabaran dan hala-tuju rakyat Malaysia
dalam membina identiti sebagai sebuah
bangsa dari pelbagai aspek kenegaraan.
Diharap penerbitan buku ini akan
mencetuskan perbahasan yang sihat dan
konstruktif untuk memajukan tanahair dan
membina bangsa Malaysia, terutamanya
dalam situasi di mana terdapat usaha di kalangan sesetengah
pihak untuk memecah-belahkan perpaduan bangsa.- Jomo
