The End of Barisan Nasional?
Malaysian Political Issues
Kua Kia Soong
These recent writings by Dr Kua Kia
Soong reveal one stark reality, namely
that the Barisan National coalition that
has ruled Malaysia since Independence
in 1957 seems incapable of reform. In
its 54 year rule, it has destroyed many
of the democratic institutions that
existed at Independence in 1957. Other
institutions such as Royal Commissions
of Inquiry have been systematically debased. Malaysia
was in fact freer at independence than it is today. In
his unique polemical style, Kua applies his knowledge,
training and experience over the years to a kaleidoscope
of Malaysian political issues: democracy, freedoms,
human rights, laws, police, detention without trial, racism,
environment, arms spending, energy, politics, reform,
and more. He urges Malaysians to think beyond the two
front political systems toward a third political force that
calls for democratic planning, direct action and popular
participation on the reform of Malaysian society.
Hak Untuk Berbeza Pendapat
Sebuah Lakaran Biografi Lim Kit Siang
Ooi Kee Beng
Lim Kit Siang telah berada di barisan
hadapan politik Malaysia semenjak Parti
Tindakan Demokratik didaftarkan pada
1966. Walaupun telah ditahan tanpa
bicara sebanyak dua kali – pada 1969
dan 1987 - selama tiga tahun, beliau
kekal sebagai tokoh politik utama yang
berdiri teguh menentang corak politik
berasaskan kaum yang diamalkan oleh
gabungan parti pemerintah Negara.
sekarang. Walau apa pun, tidak banyak kisah ditulis
tentang ahli politik yang tak lapuk dek hujan, tak lekang
dek panas ini.
Patriots & Pretenders
The Malayan Peoples’ Independence
Struggle
Kua Kia Soong
Patriots & Pretenders is the peoples’
history of the Malayan Independence
struggle, which challenges the ‘official’
version of how ‘Merdeka’ was won.
Following on from his 2007 best-selling
May 13: Declassified Documents on
the Malaysian Riots of 1969, Dr Kua
Kia Soong here attempts to put the
record straight on another important
episode in Malaysian history. As in
May 13, he has scoured documents from the British
Archives which reveal the thinking behind British colonial
strategy during the Emergency, especially for post-colonial
Malaya. These documents also reveal the efforts of the
British High Commissioner at the time, in the formation of
the Alliance.
While this country remains stuck in a racialist rut after
54 years on Independence, Patriots & Pretenders calls on
Malaysian to break through to a people-centred non-racial
agenda for change. From the lessons of the past, Kua
outlines some pointers to the future which could form
the Malaysian peoples’ demands for the next general
elections.
