Portuguese and Luso-Asian Legacies
in Southeast Asia, 1511-2011, Vol. 1
The Making of the Luso-Asian World
Intricacies of Engagement
Edited by Laura Jarnagin
In 1511, a Portuguese expedition
under the command of Alfonso de
Albuquerque arrived on the shores of
Malacca, taking control of the prosperous
Malayan port-city after a swift military
campaign. Portugal, a peripheral but
then technologically advanced country in
southwestern Europe since the latter
fifteenth century, had been in the process of establishing
solid outposts all along Asia’s littoral in order to
participate in the most active and profitable maritime
trading routes of the day. As it turned out, the Portuguese
presence and influence in the Malayan Peninsula and
elsewhere in continental and insular Asia expanded far
beyond the sphere of commerce and extended over time
well into the twenty-first century. – Rui M. Loureiro,
Bangkok May 2010
Perspectives on a Divided Thailand
Edited by Michael J. Montesano, Pavin Chachavalpongpun
and Aekapol Chongvilaivan
After a two-month stand-off between Red
Shirt protestors and the government of
Protestors and the government of Prime
Minister Abhisit Vejjajiva, violence and
arson scarred central Bangkok in mid-
May 2010. This shocking turn of events
underlined how poorly understood the
deep divisions in the society and
politics of Thailand remained, even five years into the
country’s prolonged crisis. This volume collects analysis
and commentary on those divisions from an unusually
large and prominent group of Thai and foreign scholars
and observers of the country. Contributions examine
socio-economic, political, diplomatic, historical, cultural
and ideological issues with rare frankness, clarity and lack
of jargon.
Early Interactions between South
and Southeast Asia
Reflections on Cross-Cultural Exchange
Edited by Pierre-Yves Manguin, A.Mani and Geoff Wade
The unilateral concept of “Indianisation
of Southeast Asia” advocated by the
earlier scholars since the 1930s has
been challenged in various ways over the
last forty years. Recent archaeological
discoveries in Southeast Asia and South
Asia have revealed the interactions
between these two regions extending to
even before the so-called Indianisation of Southeast
Asia began. This volume, aproduct of an international
conference on the interactions of these teo regions,
provides us with a good picture of the present state
of studies through an elaborate Introduction which
assesses the past and present research and twenty-three
specialized papers divided into two broad sections – the
archaeological evidence for interactions and localization
in Southeast Asia. This book is a great contribution not
only to the study of early Southeast Asian history, but
also to the history of Asia and the world in general by
reappraising the concept of “Indianisation”. – Noboru
Karashima, Professor Emeritus, Tokyo University
New
Labour in Vietnam
Edited by Anita Chan
Two decades after Vietnam introduced
a programme of economic renovation
commonly known as Doi Moi, the
country today allows market competition
in industry, and a new working class
has been created. This is the first book
to focus on the role and conditions of
workers in the new economic regime. Ten
of the world’s leading scholars on
Vietnamese industrial relations trace Vietnam’s labour
history and the circumstances today of state-sector
workers and of migrant workers in both the cities and rural
industries. While some authors explore the impact of the
socialist legacy, others examine the reasons for the large
number of recent strikes. The book provides insights into
the workforce of one of Asia’s most rapidly developing
industrial economies.
