Shorter Poems<br />
Poetry was now a permanent calling for <strong>Bhai</strong> <strong>Vir</strong> <strong>Singh</strong>. He<br />
poured his fervent vision of beauty and the tremor of joy<br />
it released inside him into well made short lyrics. These<br />
poems, first of their kind in Punjabi, became instantly popuIar<br />
and gained him a large audience, outside the religious circle.<br />
Several collections in handsome, decorative format<br />
appeared--the first one Trel Tupke I"Dew Drops") sixteen<br />
years after Rana Surat <strong>Singh</strong>. This Volume contained<br />
quatrains, in the manner of the Persian mbat. The form was<br />
an innovation for Punjabi language. Trel Tupke was followed<br />
at quick intervals by Lehran de HOI ",Wreaths of the Waves"),<br />
Bijlian de HOI ",Wreaths of Lightning") and Matak Hulare, an<br />
anthology of poems exclusively on the scenes and sites of<br />
the valley of Kashmir. In 1933 was published Kambdi Kalai<br />
I"Wrist Atremble"), a collection of songs in honour of the<br />
Sikh Gurus.<br />
These poems are rich in personal import. They express a<br />
rare mood of lucid <strong>com</strong>munion. A fugitive thrill of gladness<br />
echoes through them. The poet is a pilgrim of the highlands of<br />
the spirit. For him "clouds are the dancing-floor." "Thrill is his<br />
homeland: thrillis his being." "Lifegivingtouch" oftheInfinite,<br />
the Formless is what the poet lives to realize. He sees a halo of<br />
mystery and beauty spread over everything around him.<br />

He needs must discern the beauty... He lives in what He has<br />
created: He shines forth overmore like the moon in the<br />
