hoped they would not be excited. If any<br />

odium arising from Mrs. Thornton's dis-<br />

appearance was to fall on any one, let it be<br />

on Audley Dale, unless, indeed, Audley<br />

Dale were to make it worth <strong>her</strong> while to<br />

clear him. She took out his note, which<br />

Mr. Thornton had dropped the day before<br />

in his study, and, as she read it again, ob-<br />

served, much as she had done then, *' This<br />

may be worth all that madam took from<br />

me. If anything turns up about <strong>her</strong>, let<br />

him clear himself as he can—without me."<br />

Mr. Thornton's bed-room window was in<br />

the front <strong>of</strong> the Rectory, so that whoever<br />

sat by it, as Clare did, could hardly fail to<br />

see any one approaching the house, and<br />

Clare had not sat t<strong>her</strong>e very long before<br />

she saw Audley Dale slowly coming up the<br />
