<strong>her</strong>. She would have liked to have seen<br />

be struck down, but to have known whose<br />

hand it was that struck <strong>her</strong>. She would<br />

know nothing now. In <strong>her</strong> last hours she<br />

would have felt that the blow which felled<br />

<strong>her</strong> came from <strong>her</strong> husband's hand alone.<br />

She would never have dreamed that it was<br />

the woman she had cheated, insulted, and<br />

despoiled, who had prompted him to give<br />

that blow. After all, Clare's vengeance was<br />

incomplete, even in its thoroughness. Her<br />

mistress was as much raised above <strong>her</strong> in<br />

<strong>her</strong> death as she had been in <strong>her</strong> life.<br />

said, and yet she wished it had not come<br />
