She glanced at the clothes which she had<br />

brushed so carefully, and laid them w<strong>her</strong>e<br />

they could hardly fail to catch the doctor s<br />

eye. "^ If anything has happened," she<br />

thought, '^ they'll tell no tales." Then she<br />

proceeded, with <strong>her</strong> usual deftness, to<br />

arrange the chamber, after which she sur-<br />

veyed <strong>her</strong> patient.<br />

" I do n't like that cut. 'T ain't so much<br />

in itself, but it has a queer look. I'll sponge<br />

it and put some sticking-plaster on, and<br />

make the doctor believe he'd sense enough<br />

to do it for himself when he came home<br />

last night. It's just that cut and the<br />

state <strong>of</strong> his clothes makes me think that<br />

something has happened, and that things<br />

have n't gone quite so smoothly with madam<br />

after all."<br />
