never be told again. He was sorry for this<br />

poor weak misguided saint, who had made<br />

so terrible a mistake, and was paying so<br />

great a penalty for the doing so. But he<br />

could not repress the triumphing in his<br />

" I am sorry for it," he said gravely.<br />

" I should have liked to have told him that<br />

I had seen Mrs. Thornton this morning,*and<br />

Clare turned paler than he had ever seen<br />
