trifled with. He insisted upon <strong>her</strong> giving<br />

him what she had found, and on <strong>her</strong> again<br />

refusing, struck <strong>her</strong> with the stick he held in<br />

his hand, and she fell. He had not intended<br />

to do <strong>her</strong> any serious injury—he had given<br />

<strong>her</strong> many a blow before, but none so heavy<br />

as this. He was surprised when she did not<br />

move—he shook <strong>her</strong> roughly, and told <strong>her</strong><br />

not to sulk. No answer came, and he was<br />

frightened. Had he killed <strong>her</strong>, or was she<br />

shamming? He hardly dared hope the<br />

last, but thought it best to get away, and<br />

await the result at home. When the morn-<br />

ing broke, and his wife did not appear, he<br />

put his horses in the van, and went his<br />

way, putting as many miles as he could<br />
