They had light ale at supper, which was<br />

good and clear ; afterwards whiskey and<br />

brandy were put on the table, and the<br />

water to mix them with was, what it rarely<br />

is in far more pretentious places, up to<br />

boihng point. They did n't talk about any-<br />

thing unpleasant all supper-time. It was<br />

tacitly understood that the meal was to be<br />

enjoyed, and nothing discussed which woidd<br />

militate against its enjoyment. Mrs. Thorn-<br />

ton asked after Mrs. Rushington and after<br />

Milly very affectionately, but she made no<br />

allusion to <strong>her</strong> husband or even to Audley<br />

Dale. To have brought his name up would<br />

have brought up things which, while the<br />

rabbits and onions were about, would be<br />

best avoided. She laughed, chatted, and<br />

now and then dashed <strong>of</strong>f into a bar <strong>of</strong> a<br />

song. Mr. Thompson paid <strong>her</strong> a great deal<br />

<strong>of</strong> attention, and she received it much as she<br />

had done similar attentions from Audley<br />
