and curtsied in recognition <strong>of</strong> the plaudits<br />

<strong>of</strong> the pit, she cast a grateful look at him,<br />

and when she gave <strong>her</strong> second curtsey made<br />

a slight inclination <strong>of</strong> the head towards his<br />

box, as if to show him how she appreciated<br />

his exertions.<br />

Mr. Thompson clapped again. He had<br />

pensed, when he left home, with putting any<br />

on, so that his plaudits were given with all<br />

the force <strong>of</strong> his two palms ; but, as he<br />

clapped, he looked curiously at Temple<br />

Masters, who, leaning back, with a puzzled,<br />
