It all mattered very little to the Bishop.<br />

pretence to eat. Maurice had drunk a<br />

ordered for " the good <strong>of</strong> the house," and<br />

they were trying to talk over matters, and<br />

see what they could make <strong>of</strong> the terrible<br />

difficulty which had overcome them. They<br />

were unable to cope with it. It mastered<br />

them completely. It was a bewildering<br />

horror — a great overwhelming tragedy<br />

which had come into the smooth common-<br />

place <strong>of</strong> their decorous lives, and which<br />

they could neit<strong>her</strong> understand nor grapple<br />

with. The Bishop had obeyed his impulses<br />

and Price's advice, and hurried <strong>of</strong>f from the<br />

Palace to Wearmouth, thinking that in one<br />

way or anot<strong>her</strong> his very presence t<strong>her</strong>e<br />

must benefit his son. But now he was<br />

t<strong>her</strong>e it seemed he could do nothing<br />
