The Bishop wais in one <strong>of</strong> the best sitting-<br />

rooms <strong>of</strong> the hotel. He had desired Price<br />

not to let the people <strong>of</strong> the inn know who<br />

he was, and Price had answered that they<br />

would certainly recognise his lordship, who<br />

had so lately been a visitor in that part <strong>of</strong><br />

the world. But perhaps none <strong>of</strong> the people<br />

at the inn were church-goers, and so bad<br />

not heard the Bishop preach the charity<br />

sermon two months ago, or maybe they<br />

thought so little <strong>of</strong> a bishop, unless he was<br />

a customer, that they had forgotten all<br />

about his lordship's recent advent in Wear-<br />

mouth. Certain it is, that they had not<br />

recognized him ; but, still. Price's manner<br />

and bearing were such that they could not<br />

fail to be impressed by the fact that in<br />

entertaining his master they were honoured,<br />
