Wait—what did that mean? Had he<br />

hired any one to kill <strong>her</strong> ? Was it that for<br />

which they were waiting ? Then she could<br />

almost have smiled at the folly <strong>of</strong> the<br />

thought. Such things were not done now-<br />

a-days, or only in melodramas. But what<br />

was the meaning <strong>of</strong> his madness ? That it<br />

had some awful meaning she felt sure.<br />

Presently she roused a little out <strong>of</strong> the<br />

mental torpor into which <strong>her</strong> despairing<br />

fears had sent <strong>her</strong>, and said, faintly,<br />
