He was baffled every way. He could<br />

make nothing <strong>of</strong> <strong>her</strong>— yes, one thing. He<br />

was more cei*tain than ever that the dead<br />

woman was not Mrs. Thornton. Equally<br />

certain that Clare was aware <strong>of</strong> the fact.<br />
