light shallow nature quiver and tremble<br />

with a dim vague liorror <strong>of</strong> some awful<br />

purpose, written in the eyes that looked sa<br />

pitilessly upon <strong>her</strong> ?<br />

No—not pitilessly—at the second glance,<br />

assuredly not that ; they were eyes that<br />

spoke <strong>of</strong> judgment and <strong>of</strong> doom, but stiR<br />

<strong>of</strong> love, that shuddered at the vengeance it<br />

was in its own despite compelled to inflict<br />

—eyes, that, under all their sternness,<br />

showed a world <strong>of</strong> anguish that made <strong>her</strong><br />

feel how hopeless it would be to appeal to<br />

him for pity. Did he not pity <strong>her</strong>, grieve<br />

over <strong>her</strong>, mourn for <strong>her</strong> ?—surely yes.<br />

T<strong>her</strong>e was the utter hopelessness <strong>of</strong> it<br />

nothing that she could say, no tears or<br />

prayers, would move this man one inch from<br />

that, from which his whole nature recoiled<br />

with an unspeakable loathing.<br />

She felt that instinctively, and yet as in-<br />

stinctively cried out, " Harold !" and seizing.
