was not what she said, but what she ap-<br />

peared to suppress, that had its effect upon<br />

the spectators and jury. She let them<br />

believe, without saying so, that she had<br />

been compelled to send that anonymous<br />

letter to the mayor ; that she had seen so<br />

much that was wrong in Mr. Dale's rela-<br />

tions to <strong>her</strong> mistress, that she was prepared<br />

to credit him with a still deeper crime, and<br />

that, let ot<strong>her</strong>s think what they might,<br />

t<strong>her</strong>e was no deceiving <strong>her</strong> in anything<br />

that dead woman in the adjoining room<br />

had been <strong>her</strong> mistress, and she had come<br />

foully by <strong>her</strong> end.<br />

After a time, the <strong>of</strong>ficers who had been<br />

despatched to Audley Dale's apartments<br />

returned, and every eye was turned eagerly<br />

towards them, as a long piece <strong>of</strong> lace was<br />

produced, and handed to Charlotte Clare,<br />

who at once identified it as the cravat <strong>her</strong>
