she was going. She believed that Mr.<br />

Thornton did not know. She found it out<br />

afterwards, from a note which she picked<br />

up, and which Mrs. Thornton had dropped.<br />

She read it, yes, she read it, because<br />

and then the witness stopped, and seemed<br />

hardly to like to give <strong>her</strong> reasons, but at<br />

last, as if feeling that the truth must be<br />

told, went on— " she read it because thij:igs<br />

had been going on in the house, <strong>of</strong> which<br />

Mr. Thornton, she believed, was perfectly<br />

ignorant, but which had made <strong>her</strong> uncom-<br />

fortable, and at times inclined to give up<br />

<strong>her</strong> situation, and she felt curious to see,<br />

when this note came in <strong>her</strong> way, from Mr.<br />

Audley Dale to Mrs. Thornton, what was<br />

in it. That was the note which told <strong>her</strong><br />

w<strong>her</strong>e she had gone that afternoon. Should<br />

she read it, or would the coroner like to<br />

have it V<br />

Then she produced the hurried scrawl<br />
