night with him, and I should be glad <strong>of</strong> a<br />

cup <strong>of</strong> tea."<br />

Deb went down, rat<strong>her</strong> angrily mutter-<br />

ing, as she went, that " some folks would<br />

take their four meals reglar, an' keep their-<br />

selves spick as a new pin, if the whole<br />

world was a comin' to an end the next<br />

day," and then she got Clare <strong>her</strong> tea, and<br />

tried to take some breakfast <strong>her</strong>self, but<br />

broke down in the middle <strong>of</strong> it. This was<br />

the first time in all the household troubles<br />

that Deb's appetite had given way ; but<br />

the thought <strong>of</strong> <strong>her</strong> mistress lying stiff and<br />

cold in the old Fort, " while every one was<br />

flytin' on <strong>her</strong>, an' givin' <strong>her</strong> the worst<br />

names they could," was too much for Deb.<br />

She had no heart even to scrub, and scrub-<br />

bing was generally Deb's panacea and safety-
