I won a “Scrabble“ mug as a ratings prize.
After my last tournament, I decided to wash my Scrabble tile
bag and needed to put the tiles somewhere while the bag was
drying. As I don’t use my “Scrabble“ mug for drinking from, I
thought this would be the ideal tile holder. As you know, there are
100 tiles in a set. The “Scrabble” mug only holds 93 standard tiles.
Shouldn’t future mugs be a little larger?
I have been much saddened to hear of the passing of Don Davis who contributed
letters to TLW in the past - interesting ones too.
Daphne Fletcher of the Hove Scrabble Club wrote:
Don collapsed and sadly died of a heart attack on the way to our club in April. His
funeral was well attended by numerous friends and the many organisations he
belonged to.
He thoroughly enjoyed competitive scrabble, to “keep the brain cells active” (aged
85) and was an excellent player, always cheerful (with the exception of Scrabble
“vowel trouble”) and was a loyal Club supporter.
Don was a popular man and a great advertisement for Scrabble holidays and
tournaments (the I.O.W. was his favourite) when we usually travelled together
exchanging scrabble ideas en route.
He will be greatly missed.

are all very proud and fond of Stella”.Two for the price of one here as not only is Stella
an ABSP member but she has just joined the exclusive 090 Club and is member No 6.
When did you join Carshalton SC?
I joined the Club in October 1982.
Do you enjoy captaining a team playing in the Southern
Counties League?
Yes, in spite of the frustrations of finding dates to suit all
the right players in each match.
Why does playing Scrabble interest you so much?
Having always liked mind games and doing crosswords,
Scrabble appealed to me when I played my first game with
my sister in about 1965.
Is Scrabble your main hobby?
My other pastime is doing jigsaw puzzles and although I am not very mobile I do go to
several Whist Drives in the wintertime.
Tell me about your career and marriage.
I left school at 14 years of age and was immediately apprenticed to the millinery trade. I
travelled every day to the Barbican from Windsor where I lived then, and did so four for
years until we moved to London. I married in 1935, had three daughters and now have six
grand children and seven great grand children.
Do you mind people knowing your age?
Not at all. I was 91 years old on 6th January 2004 and at the Club on the Wednesday we
all enjoyed a chocolate cake made by one of the members and they all sang “Happy
Birthday”.
When was the above photograph taken?
On my 90th birthday last year.
Remember if you would like to join The 090 Club the criteria for joining is you MUST be
over 90 - a couple of young things in their 80s tried to join in the past and obviously their
application was declined.
PHOTOGRAPHS - Over the last few years I have amassed quite a few photographs.
If you have given me a photograph and I have not returned it please do not panic - they
are all safe and I will return them as and when.
