Reading List: US Intellectual History
Daniel Borus
This is my reading list for the US intellectual history research field for the PhD. The field is a
vast one (especially the twentieth century) and preparation for the examination will acquaint
students with only a small portion of the work relevant to their teaching and research careers.
Students should think of this list as preliminary suggestions from which they will fashion a list
tailored to their own research interests. The examination list that students compile and which I
approve will consist of fifty books, divided among the Eighteenth, Nineteenth, and Twentieth
Centuries. Normally, students will do twenty books in the century in which they will
specialize and fifteen in the other two.
In addition, the list should broadly be distributed among the various subfields that constitute the
concern of American intellectual historians -- art, social thought and theory, political ideology,
philosophy and psychology, and religion.
No text is required but students would be well advised to consult one of the following:
Paul A. Carter, Revolt Against Destiny : An Intellectual History of the United States (New York:
Columbia University Press, 1989).
Lewis Perry, Intellectual Life in America : A History, University of Chicago Press ed., (Chicago:
University of Chicago Press, 1989).
A better approach would be to read the soon-to-be-completed American Thought and Culture
series, published by Twayne and Rowman and Littlefield.
E. Brooks Holifield, Era of Persuasion: American thought and culture, 1521-1680 Twayne,
1989.
Ned C. Landsman, From Colonials to Provincials: American Thought and Culture, 1680-1760,
Twayne, 1997.
William Graebner, The Age of Doubt: American Thought and Culture in the 1940s, Twayne,
1991.
Casey N. Blake, Daniel H. Borus, and Howard Brick, At the Center: American Thought and
Culture in the Mid-Twentieth Century, 1948-1963 (forthcoming)
Howard Brick, Age of Contradiction: American Thought and Culture in the 1960s, Twayne,
1998.
J. David Hoeveler, The Postmodern Turn: American Thought and Culture in the 1970s, Twayne,
1996.
James Livingston, The World Turned Inside Out: American Thought and Culture at the End of
the Twentieth Century, Rowman & Littlefield, 2009.
Primary Sources: Acquaintance with key primary sources is especially crucial to the mastery of
the field. Students are strongly, strongly encouraged to begin with David Hollinger and Charles
Capper, eds., The American Intellectual Tradition, sixth edition. With my permission, students
may substitute primary sources for secondary ones.
