Throughout the 1970s it seemed as if Roy Halston Frowick
dressed every disco diva on Steve Rubell’s star-studded Rolodex.
Halston’s brand of pared-down but luxurious minimalism was
a hit with the Studio 54 elite in its heyday, including Bianca
Jagger, Liza Minnelli, Elizabeth Taylor and Anjelica Huston, who
all adored the architectural simplicity of his designs.
This former milliner, whose previous crowning achievement
was designing Jacqueline Kennedy’s pillbox hat for JFK’s
presidential inauguration, could seemingly do no wrong. Yet
Halston’s career did unravel, accelerated by his spiralling drug
misuse and a refusal to delegate licensing deals to other
designers. He died of AIDS in 1990 aged 57, in a design wilderness,
having lost the right to design under his own name.
Halston the brand has had eight owners and six designers
in the intervening period, but its star now seems fi rmly in the
ascendant again under the ownership of the Weinstein Company,
Tamara Mellon (founder of Jimmy Choo) and stylist Rachel Zoe.
With Marios Schwab designing and actress Sarah Jessica Parker
acting as creative consultant on the Halston Heritage line, you
can almost hear Chic’s Good Times playing across the years.
