the liveliest bet for Tignes après-ski. Gentler and more scenic, La Plagne is made up of ten villages, and is great for easygoing wooded runs and cross-country trails, with some easy off-piste. Ideal for families, Valmorel and La Tania are both small, safe villages with car-free centres. Valmorel has nursery slopes in the middle of the village, with Club Piou Piou taking care of children between 18 months and six years. La Tania is linked to Courchevel and Méribel, with easy runs back to the village. Val d’Isère has a reputation for serious après-ski. Its famed party scene has lost some of its fi zz recently, with the younger crowd put off by rising prices, but it’s still a goer, with essential après-ski spots including La Folie Douce, Bananas, the Moris Pub and the legendary club Dick’s Tea Bar. Val d’Isère also has some of the world’s best lift-served off-piste. Les Arcs is a good all-rounder, with super-swift links to Paris and London (it’s just 20 minutes by funicular from the train station at Bourg Saint-Maurice). It has plenty of high-quality terrain and an enticing variety of runs; the 7km descent from Aiguille Rouge to Le Pré, dropping 2,000 metres, is a classic. For student groups on a shoestring, there are abundant, affordable self-catering apartments in Les Menuires, making it the best-value resort in the Trois Vallées, with no let-up in the fantastic quality of skiing and snowboarding on offer at all levels. At the other end of the scale, in oligarch-friendly, high-status Courchevel 1850, you can stay at Byblos des Neiges (byblos.com), an offshoot of the St Tropez original, and eat like royalty at two-Michelin-star Chabichou (chabichou-courchevel. com). La Table de Mon Grand-Père (lespeupliers.com), down in Le Praz, does simpler, very good Savoyard cooking. Val Thorens: 1 hour 15 mins by coach from Moûtiers.
