One Frenchman who knows a thing or two about his country’s paternalistic employment attitudes is Hamid Senni, 34. Born into a poor French-Moroccan family, the promising student was frozen out of French jobs despite good qualifi cations, but eventually found himself in senior positions at Sony Ericsson and BP in Britain. (During a hiatus, he returned to France, only fi nding work as a vacuum cleaner salesman.) In 2005 he launched the management consultancy fi rm Vision Enabler. “It took me three hours to set up the company in London,” recalls Senni. “But to do the same in Paris, it would take two years. You spend so much time on the paperwork, by the time you’ve started you’ve lost money already.” French immigration to Britain is nothing new. Most of the UK’s aristocracy are descendants of the “migrants” of the Norman Conquests. During the 17th century around 50,000 persecuted Huguenots decamped to England. Since then high-profi le émigrés have included Charles de Gaulle, who took refuge inside the Lycée Français during World War II. But South Kensington (or the “21st arrondissement”) didn’t become an expats’ enclave until after the Institut Français was formed in 1910, followed by the Lycée fi ve years later. Celebrating its centenary this year, the Institut Français was established to introduce French culture to Londoners. Today it’s a sanctuary for francophiles of all sorts, hosting regular wine tastings, screenings of Jean Luc-Godard fi lms and gigs by French electro bands. The diaspora has spread from SW7; fl ourishing French communities now exist in Clapham and Ealing, both clustered around the Lycée’s two annexes, as well as in Fulham and Brook Green, thanks to there being French primary schools nearby. To cater for these communities, scores of enterprises (even French-speaking vets) have been set up. French doctors run clinics in London three days a week before shuttling back on Eurostar to work in Paris for the remaining two days. There’s even a lavish annual awards ceremony, Français of the Year, which dishes gongs out to such as Eva Green and Arsène Wenger. Next month the capital’s fi rst ever francophone radio station, French Radio London (frenchradiolondon.com) is set to launch. Taking over the channel slot released by Smooth FM, and boasting an 80 per cent French music quota, it’s all the brainchild of broadcasting consultant Pascal Grierson, who has had the idea “for the last 15 years”. “We’re not a French radio station coming to London; we’re a London radio station broadcasting in French,” he says. “Obviously, we’ll be giving a nod to what’s happening back home, what Sarkozy has done today et cetera, but most daytime talk will be the news, sport, weather and travel that’s relevant to London life.” Grierson hopes the station will reach out to British francophiles too: “There’s a resurgence in French cool. The Coco, Piaf and Gainsbourg fi lms have all done well, plus French pop music, whether it’s Daft Punk 112 METROPOLITAN décrocha aucun travail en France… mais fi t le bonheur de Sony Ericsson, puis de BP, chez qui il fut cadre à Londres. Pour l’anecdote, le seul emploi qu’on lui proposa à son retour en France fut celui de vendeur d’aspirateurs. Il rentra bien vite à Londres où il créa, en 2005, sa société de conseil en management, Vision Enabler. « Ça m’a pris trois heures au lieu de deux ans à Paris. En France, la paperasse prend tellement de temps que vous avez déjà perdu de l’argent avant même de commencer, déplore-t-il. » Ce n’est bien sûr pas la première vague d’immigration française en Grande-Bretagne. La plus grande partie de l’aristocratie britannique médiévale descendait de Français installés au moment de la conquête normande. Environ 50 000 Huguenots persécutés trouvèrent refuge en Angleterre au XVII e siècle et Charles de Gaulle se retrancha pendant la guerre dans le lycée qui devait porter son nom. South Kensington est devenu le « XXI e arrondissement », aidé, il est vrai par la création de l’Institut Français du Royaume-Uni en 1910, suivi du Lycée cinq ans après. Les Français ont essaimé dans d’autres quartiers, comme « L’infâme cuisine anglaise compte déjà quelques fans » Clapham et Ealing, proches des deux annexes du Lycée, ou encore Fulham et Brook Green, dont ils apprécient les écoles primaires françaises. Ces micro-communautés françaises ont leurs propres services, voire leur propre vétérinaire. Certains médecins consultent à Londres trois jours par semaine, avant de sauter dans l’Eurostar pour terminer leur semaine à Paris. Les « Français of the Year Awards » récompensent les expatriés les plus talentueux, à l’image d’Eva Green et Arsène Wenger. Londres s’apprête à connaître le mois prochain le lancement de sa première radio francophone, French Radio London (frenchradiolondon.com). La station, qui émettra sur la fréquence libérée par Smooth FM et diffusera 80% de musique française, est l’œuvre de Pascal Grierson, consultant radio qui « en rêvait depuis 15 ans ». « Nous ne sommes pas une radio française à Londres, mais une radio londonienne émettant en français, préciset-il. Bien sûr, on parlera des nouvelles du pays, de ce que Sarkozy a fait aujourd’hui, etc., mais on se concentrera sur ce qui intéresse les Londoniens : infos, sport, météo, voyages... » Pascal Grierson espère bien que sa radio sera aussi écoutée par les Britanniques francophiles : « Le lien entre notre lancement et l’attrait grandissant pour la culture française est évident : le French cool revient à la mode, avec les fi lms sur Coco Chanel, Piaf ou Gainsbourg, qui ont très bien marché, ou dans la musique. Daft Punk et Phoenix font un malheur ici. » Autre initiative média très appréciée des francophiles et expatriés, le site chiclondres.com, créé l’année dernière par Frédérique Andréani, collaboratrice de Libération et chroniqueuse pour Metropolitan.
