Illustration: Telegramme Frédéric mahoux Bend it like Belgium? — THE TALKER — B R U S S E L S In Brussels, when something isn’t straight or in line, we say that it’s schieve, ie wonky. A wall, for instance, can be schieve, but so can a guy bowling out of a bistro after a couple of beers too many. To call someone a schievearchitekt is positively an insult. So when a national daily newspaper revealed that the King Baudouin Stadium in Brussels, where the Belgian national football team played Germany in early September, had a schieve set of goalposts, it was pretty big news. Not least because Belgium had lost that game – a crucial Euro 2012 qualifi er, no less. Was it possible, people wondered, that the Germans had benefi ted from the fact that the goalposts at one end of the pitch are not centred? That is, they are actually 20cm closer to one corner fl ag than the other. More than enough, surely, to accommodate a shot that might otherwise have gone wide? And the worst of it is that, if it hadn’t been for U2’s eagle-eyed stage crew as they set up for a concert a week later, no one might ever have noticed. While football fans are gutted, others think it’s hilarious. Everyone, of course, has their own theory, but for some it’s clear that the groundsman who marked out the pitch must have been schievezat – in other words, totally drunk. For the city authorities, the matter takes on a more surreal note, because the anchor points for both the goalposts and the corner fl ags are apparently permanently and immutably fi xed. The German press has had the decency not to make too much of this business. But they also must be chuckling quietly to themselves. So, just as Pisa has its tower, Brussels now has its football pitch. This could be a bad omen for our ever schieve politicians, who are currently debating the drawing up of new regional boundaries between Flanders, Walloon and Brussels…
