50ème amour de vacances Vallée de l'Ubaye
(never easy to book) are available through Flexiski at the newly refurbed three-star Hotel St Louis in 1850. For a true haute-alpine moment, head off piste to Refuge du Grand Plan. This old dairy high in the Vallée des Avals was recently converted. It’s just €40 a night half board and, at 2,300 metres, you’re well placed for a perfect powder morning. Which is still the point, really. The Three Valleys are a topographical smorgasbord that could feed the world – and the glossiest grooming and some of the best powder stashes are to be found in the C-spot. In fact, three-time Freeride World Champion and local mountain guide Manu Gaidet counts Les Avals among his top back-country routes. Anywhere. Between making Haute Savoie tracks and doing haute-couture shopping, Courchevelistes are busy, busy, busy. This December the Ladies’ World Cup returns for the fi rst time in 30 years. It’s pukka chukka in January when the world’s highest Snow Polo Tournament kicks off at the altiport. A highlight of the many free (yet reassuringly costly to stage) events is the spectacular International Festival of Pyrotechnic Art, decorating night skies throughout February and March. And keep your eyes open in the day: the natural beauty of the Alps gets a frisson with an outdoor art safari of Dalí and Rodin sculptures scattered across the mountaintops. Fresh air, fabulous mountains, and Hello! coming alive before your very eyes. Life couldn’t look much better. Of course, a little injection of Botox might not hurt either. Eurostar’s ski train runs between London St Pancras and Moutiers (one hour by coach to Courchevel) from December 19. Standard tickets from £149.
