PLAYING
IN THE
SANDBOX
The Hurt Locker opens with the quote “war is a drug.”
Stars Anthony Mackie and Jeremy Renner discuss how they got hooked.
// BY TIFFANIE GREEN AND LAYLA SCHLACK
WHEN JEREMY RENNER (The
Assassination of Jessse James by the
Coward Robert Ford and 28 Weeks Later)
and Anthony Mackie (Notorious, We
Are Marshall) started shooting The
Hurt Locker, they were dropped into
Amman, Jordan, in 115-degree heat,
no cameras in sight, to tell the story of
a bomb-disposal unit in Iraq, where
homemade explosives planted in cars
and buildings are insurgents’ weapons
of choice. The locations and missions
were diff erent for the actors than for
the soldiers they portrayed, but the
conditions—the sweat, the hard work,
the camaraderie—were all the same.
Renner plays the squad leader, Staff
Sgt. William James, who’s a whiz at
defusing explosive ordnance, but not
so great at following protocol; Mackie
plays his fastidious, professional
second in command, Sgt. J.T. Sanborn in
this intense but deliberately paced fi lm.
Thwarting the conventions of actionladen
war movies, The Hurt Locker often
strives for truth over bravado—almost
as much time is spent waiting around
or searching for bombs as is spent
disposing of them. But that’s not to say
this is a snoozer—there’s a healthy does
of genre fodder: outbursts of machismo,
bombs exploding.

So what is it about this fi lm that has
generated early Oscar buzz? How did
it garner higher per-screen sales than
the big-budget Transformers 2, which
was released at the same time? It seems
that what made the fi lm a runaway hit—
when most movies about the Iraq war,
such as last year’s Stop-Loss and 2007’s
Redacted, fi zzled pretty quickly—is its
gritty, detailed simulacrum of soldiers’
life in the “sandbox.”
The realism was provided by
reporter-cum-screenwriter Mark
Boal, who was embedded with a bomb
squad in Baghdad during the end of
2004. Inspired by Boal’s 2005 Playboy
article “The Man in the Bomb Suit,”
director Kathryn Bigelow (a rare breed,
a woman directing primarily action
movies, including Point Break and K-19:
The Widowmaker) set out to create a fi lm
that explores the kinds of characters
who make up an Explosive Ordnance
Disposal unit. She enlisted Boal to write
THE LONGEST DAY / 1962
FEATURING Eddie Albert, Paul Anka,
Richard Burton
DIRECTED BY Ken Annakin,
Andrew Marton
This D-Day epic shows both Ally and
German perspectives.
a script that would show people what’s
really going on in the ground in Iraq.
And with authenticity a clear priority,
she took a slightly unconventional
approach when it was time to start
fi lming.
“YOU NEVER KNEW where the cameras
were,” says Mackie.
Bigelow had them hidden—placed
all around the set, tucked away in
drawers and secreted high in building
spires. The Panopticon-like fi lming
environment forced the actors to truly
become their characters. The resulting
unscripted moments and give the movie
a documentary feel. “It did feel like the
actors were living this experience,” says
Bigelow.
“Eighty percent of the time, it didn’t
feel like we were shooting a movie,”
Renner remembers. “We just had to
lean on each other and focus on the
task at hand, try to keep it as real as we
The precursor to the TV series
fi nds black humor in a Korean War
could.” For him, that meant putting on
an authentic 100-pound, metal-plated
bomb suit and a massive helmet. One of
the crew’s challenges was keeping him
hydrated. But for Renner, not knowing
where the cameras were was a bigger
hurdle. “It was really diffi cult, because
I’m used to understanding where the
cameras are,” he says. “We called them
ninja cameras.”
Mackie (a Juilliard-trained theater
actor before breaking into fi lm) on
the other hand, enjoyed the hidden
cameras. “They got some really cool
unscripted stuff ,” he says. And this was
Bigelow’s intention; she didn’t direct
the actors much on set, leaving them
to work out situations on their own
(incidentally, not unlike what EOD unit
members have to do).
“All the direction was given a year
prior to principal photography, sitting
over a glass of wine, discussing the
character with Kathryn. [Staff Sgt.
William James] was a really well
written character. For me, the job,
the suit, those things really brought
what we had discussed together.”
Renner says. “She shot the fi lm staying
out of the way. She didn’t say anything
specifi c; her direction was how she
shot it.”
And Mackie did have someone on
set he looked to for guidance—Renner.
“Sometimes there are leading men who
run a set,” he says. “Jeremy has that gift
for making people feel special. As far as
you go, he’ll meet you halfway. We had
a friendship there, and Kathryn just let
us run with it.”
THE TWO ACTORS saw that same kind
of camaraderie in the EOD units
with which they spent time. Renner
observed and interviewed troops at
Fort Irwin in California, and Mackie
hung out with soldiers in North
Carolina at Fort Bragg.
Although Mackie developed a pretty
specifi c idea of who his character
was—“he wanted to leave a legacy, have
children, coach soccer and T-ball”—he
had a lot to learn about the complex
psychological aff ects war has on the
people on the front line.
“Of the men I talked to, some felt
guilty for not being over there, and a
lot of guys didn’t want to go over at all,”
Mackie says. “One thing they said was
just to be honest to the story—realize
that they’re regular guys, don’t try to
make them into superheroes.”
He also got some insight into
renegade characters like Renner’s Sgt.
James. “They were telling me that those
kind of guys are really rare. When they
meet them, they stay away from them,
or those guys get lumped together so
they can go off and be mavericky on
their own.”
Meanwhile Renner, who has a lot
of experience playing tough guys
onscreen, used the opportunity to fi nd
out what it’s really like to put one’s self
in danger on a day-to-day basis.
“The mindset of the EOD guys
is mental toughness, not physical
toughness,” he says. “They would play
RENNER (FRONT) AND MACKIE
with C4 that could take us all out, and
they weren’t afraid of that. I don’t have
the courage to do what our men and
women in the service do. It nearly
killed me, and I was only shooting a
movie. The job becomes such a part of
their life—you don’t just punch in and
punch out.”
“It didn’t feel like we were shooting
a movie. We just had to lean on
each other and focus on our task.”
Likewise, Renner’s character fi nds
it impossible to leave the war behind.
When he returns home to his wife
and young son, the audience fi nds
him going through the motions of
normalcy—grocery shopping, helping
with dinner and reading to his child—
but the message is clear: That’s not
where he wants to be.
Infusing characters with such a
brooding, enigmatic quality is Renner’s
M.O. “I’m attracted to characters who
communicate something without
words,” he says “I’d rather not have
to say a lot of dialogue to convey
something. I’m a complex person; if
my characters are not complex, I make
them more complicated. I want to make
them more human.”
PART OF THE HURT LOCKER’S power lies
in its ability to focus on the humanity
of its characters without waxing
political about the war. “I don’t like
that kind of [political] movie,” Renner
says. “This movie is meant to entertain.
It forces the audience to think and feel,
but not what to think and feel.”
Bigelow said in an interview with
Salon that taking a political stance is
a mistake in a war movie so topical
because it alienates viewers who aren’t
on the same side as the movie. “This
story is more reportorial than anything
else,” she said. “There’s always a
tendency to take a movie like this and
put it in a box, in terms of whatever
partisan politics you might come
in with... For me, this story is about
unpacking the psychology of guys who
do this job.”
By zooming in on the day-to-day
lives of the soldiers, the audience
almost forgets that they’re in Iraq,
fi ghting a politically charged war
that’s ongoing. “One of the major
fl aws of other Iraq war fi lms that
have been made is that they forget
the characters,” Mackie says. “What
Kathryn attempted to do was to
portray the psychological toll warfare
takes on those men and women who
are in the trenches. This movie gives
kudos to those soldiers.”

It is the near future. Astronaut Sam Bell is living on the far side of the moon, completing a three-year contract with Lunar Industries to mine earth’s primary
source of energy, Helium-3. It is a lonely job, made harder by a broken satellite that allows no live communications home. Suddenly, his health starts to
deteriorate. Painful headaches, hallucinations and a lack of focus lead to an almost-fatal accident. After returning to the base (with no memory of how he got
there), Sam realizes that he is fi ghting and must fi gure out where he fi ts into company plans.
