SECRET
TEARS
Do you fi nd yourself tearing up when watching your infl ight movie? You’re not alone.
And this month’s line-up including Where the Wild Things Are and The Boys Are Back packs
a wollop. BY PATRICK HUGUENIN // ILLUSTRATION BY RACHEL SALOMON
ASK PEOPLE what they can’t fl y without,
and you’ll get answers ranging from
laptops to neck pillows. Add to the list
tissues, because it turns out many of us
fi nd catharsis bawling like babies while
watching infl ight fi lms.
We, the weepers, start out strong.
We peruse the movie listings, decide
on the latest Clive Owen fl ick or Spike
Jonze’s fantastical new children’s book
adaptation, and we tell ourselves we
can make it through unfazed. Sure,
Owen plays a widower who is faced
with creating a new family for his
two heartbroken sons in The Boys Are
Back, but it’s only a fi lm. Yes, Max
and his mother share an understated,
aff ectionate reunion in Where The Wild
Things Are, but for goodness’ sake, we’re
adults. We have poignant moments
in our own relationships without
breaking down all the time. We’re sure
we’ll be able to hold it together.
Then it starts: a sniffl e, a clutch in
the throat. Your phone is off , your feet
are up, your snacks are within an arm’s
reach, and suddenly you’re sobbing at
39,000 feet.
I’m not afraid to admit it happened
to me, catching me unawares. I was on
a family vacation, comfortably stowed
in a coach seat, sipping a ginger ale,
05
catching up on a fi lm I’d missed in
theaters. That fi lm was Stepmom, in
which a tough, terminally ill mama
played by Susan Sarandon hands over
the care of her kids to her ex-hubby’s
new girlfriend, played by Julia Roberts.
It’s full of emotional moments, but the
part that really got me was near the
end. Have you seen that scene of the
mother’s fi nal Christmas?
“Wow, a real magician’s cape!” says
cute-as-a-button Ben as he gathers his
homemade gift around his shoulders.
Then, he asks a simple question: “Are
you dying?”
I covered my face with a napkin and

tried to camoufl age my reaction as
a coughing fi t, but it was no use—the
end of the movie is relentlessly
emotional. “Nobody’s loved you like I
do,” says little Ben as he throws himself
into his mother’s arms. “Nobody ever
will,” she replies.
I made use of my cocktail napkin,
feeling more than glad that my late
check-in meant that I was seated
far away from my own mother, who
otherwise might have found me sobbing
on her shoulder.
WHEN IT COMES TO movies, planes seem
to be a hotbed of overfl owing emotions.
“It must be the altitude,” says Barbara
McMurray, a publicist in Laguna Beach,
California, “but no matter what movie
I’m watching on a plane, I almost
always cry. It’s embarrassing. I cried
at the end of Woody Allen’s Whatever
Works. I cried at The Incredibles.” Lest you
think she’s just a sap, she adds: “I am
not, in general, a crier at sea level.”
It turns out that altitude is not the
cause. A 2007 study in the New England
Journal of Medicine reported that
only some fi ve percent of passengers
experience emotional reactions to
altitude, and those are minor.
“Even lame ones can get me
bawling,” says Alison Risso, director
of communications for the nonprofi t
KaBOOM!. “Among my family’s favorite
stories to tell about this phenomenon
are how I cried at Rugrats, Air Bud and A
Garfi eld Christmas Special.”
While I fi nd it reassuring that I’m not
the only one to turn on the waterworks,
I’m still not sure the cause of this
phenomenon. I asked around and got
some theories.
“An infl ight viewing is the only time
in this crazy world of emails, texts
and BlackBerry when you can really
focus on a movie,” says Rob Shuter, an
entertainment columnist at popeater.
com. “Even in the cinema, you can be
interrupted. On an airplane,
THE ALLERGEN EXCUSE
you cannot.”
New York-based psychologist
Jennifer Hartstein agrees. “Even if
you’re in a movie theater, you can
always get up and leave,” she says.
“When you’re on a plane, you allow
yourself to be fully in the moment and
go where the feeling takes you.”
The excitement of travel can add fuel
to your heightened feelings, Hartstein
notes. After you’ve rushed to pack,
corral the kids, fi nd the passports and
make the fl ight, you might be ready
to just let loose the minute you’re
airborn. For some people, that means
sleep. For others, it means blubbering
inconsolably when Carol watches Max
set sail to go home to his mother in
Where the Wild Things Are. It feels good
says. “I think I freaked people out.”
Shuter was also aff ected by Marley’s
fate, so much so that he was still
sobbing after the movie had ended. The
fl ight attendant sat down next to him
“Getting weepy is all part of the
onboard therapy,” says travel
blogger Amanda Pressner.
to leave your restraint on the ground
when you take off .
Of course, that doesn’t always negate
the undomfortable feeling of crying
in front of a stranger, a colleague or,
gulp, your boss. Anne Riley, a graduate
business student, was on her way to a
prestigious leadership conference in
Japan seated next to the president of her
school’s graduate student government,
when one of the biggest tearjerkers of
recent memory took hold.
“I saw Marley & Me as one of the
selections and I was like, No, I had a dog
growing up, and I just don’t think this
will be a good idea,” she says.
But hours into her fl ight, she changed
her mind, even despite a warning from
her seatmate (spoiler alert!): “You know
that dog dies.”
“I was already sobbing, and then they
have a dog funeral where all the kids
put their favorite toys in the grave,” she
for some impromptu counseling.
“I live in New York, but I was fl ying
back to England where I’m from,” says
Shuter, “and he assumed I had been
through a terrible breakup. I had to
go with it to save face. I just had to say,
‘Yeah, it wasn’t pretty!’”
And that’s the upside to losing your
composure: It encourages people
to reach out to each other. Susan
San Martin, a Los Angeles-based
consultant who admits that she cries
“at anything with Tom Hanks and Meg
Ryan that does not involve a volcano,”
got a secret stash of napkins from a
fl ight attendant. Shuter got champagne
refi lls for the rest of his fl ight. In fact,
even when there are no tears involved,
fl ying allows people to show diff erent
sides of themselves and can be an
opportunity to bond.
“There are girls I work with who
I’ve never seen without makeup,”
| UNITED.COM
HEART-WRENCHING MOMENTS IN WHERE THE WILD THINGS ARE AND BRIGHT STAR
07
says Shuter, “and they walk around a
plane without makeup. You see people
who unbutton their collars. When you
sit in that chair and take off your shoes,
you feel really comfortable. You feel,
literally, that your feet are not on the
ground.”
Travel blogger Amanda Pressner of
The Lost Girls says that tears are just
part of the travel experience, and one
she wouldn’t change. “For me, getting
weepy over Brad Pitt’s transformation
in The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
is all part of the onboard therapy,”
she says. “Even if people do catch me
snuffl ing away, there’s no judgment
on their part. At least, that’s what I tell
myself as I sink a tad lower in my seat.”
And I’m with her. Ask me if I’ll
watch The Boys Are Back this month for
a new round of life-lessons, and the
answer is a resounding yes. In fact, I’m
looking forward to watching Owen
spread his papa goose wings over a
wild six-year-old and a rebellious
teenager. When, during a drink with
a pal, he asks, “What chance do they
stand now?” I’ll be whimpering the
answer: “They’ve got you.” I won’t
stand a chance when I hear Keats’ fi rst
cough in Bright Star. And while, at the
cinema, my eyes stayed dry during
Alfred Molina’s monologue to his
daughter’s closed bedroom door at
the end of An Education, in the air all
bets are off .
