Our best headphones. Since we introduced the world’s
first noise cancelling headphones over 20 years ago, we
have conducted continuous research to improve this
technology. Now, we have engineered significant advances
in noise reduction to make the QC ® 15 headphones our
quietest ever. Exclusive Bose technologies electronically
sense more of the sounds around you, reducing more noise
across a wider range of frequencies. And we didn’t stop
there. We developed an ear cushion that further reduces
unwanted noise and helps create an extremely comfortable
fit. It works in harmony with the electronics to deliver a
better listening experience. ExecDigital.com says they are
“easily the best headphone available” and Murray Hill of
Canada.com calls them “fabulous.”
Welcome to an even quieter world.
To order or learn more:
1-800-760-4305, ext. Q8160 or visit Bose.com/QC
Try them for yourself risk free. When you fly, the engine
roar fades even further away. When you listen to music at
home or at work, fewer distractions get in the way. Less
noise, along with our acclaimed lifelike sound, a fit that
stays comfortable for hours and the quality you expect from
Bose. It all adds up to a combination of benefits unmatched
in the industry. Seth Porges of Popular Mechanics states
that “Compared to the competition…the QC15s are vastly
superior.” You can relax and appreciate music, movies or
just some serenity more than ever before. We invite you
to try QC15 headphones for yourself risk free for 30 days.
And when you call, ask about making 12 easy payments,
with no interest charges from Bose.* We’re so sure you’ll be
delighted, we’ll even pay to ship them to your door.
*Bose payment plan available on orders of $299-$1500 paid by major credit card. Separate financing offers may be available for select products. See website for details. Down payment is 1/12 the product price plus
applicable tax and shipping charges, charged when your order is shipped. Then, your credit card will be billed for 11 equal monthly installments beginning approximately one month from the date your order is
shipped, with 0% APR and no interest charges from Bose. Credit card rules and interest may apply. U.S. residents only. Limit one active financing program per customer. ©2011 Bose Corporation. Patent rights issued
IN TODAY’S CRUEL WORLD, IT PAYS TO
WOOD’S NEW MOVIES URGE US TO STOP
BICKERING AND JUST GET ALONG.
BY ROD O’CONNOR
EVER SINCE
THE FIRST
SILENT MOVIE
villain tied a damsel to the train tracks,
Hollywood has had a rule: The guys
in the white hats don’t make nice with
the guys in the black hats. Can you
imagine the Joker riding shotgun in
the Batmobile? Or One Flew Over the
Cuckoo’s Nest ending with a friendly
game of Yahtzee between McMurphy
and Nurse Ratched? But these days,
Hollywood is preaching a new gospel of
tolerance. Getting along is in—whether
that means cartoon villains teaming up
with adorable little adoptees (Despicable
Me), or hopelessly mismatched
romantic partners realizing that, after
all, opposites really do attract (Life as We
Know It, The Joneses).
Maybe Tinsel Town is reacting to
the public’s distaste for government
gridlock, or fi lm industry bigwigs are
feeling remorseful about the time they
dumped a top shelf martini all over
that waiter’s script. Whatever
the reason, Hollywood, historically
a lover of confl ict, has suddenly
developed a taste for détente—and
because throwing an unbearable
mamma from the train is frowned
upon in real life, maybe we can learn
a thing or two. So if you haven’t yet
come up with a decent New year’s
resolution, here are a few ideas,
courtesy of the new silver screen.
ONE-HIT WONDER Michael Cera K.O.s one of his girlfriend-tobe’s
nefarious exes in Scott Pilgrim vs. the World.
TIP #1: BREAK THE HATE CYCLE.
The problem with lifelong grudges
is that after a while, no one can
remember what started them in the
fi rst place (just ask a Hatfi eld or a
McCoy). In the comedy You Again,
Marni (Kristen Bell), a former bracefaced
high school nerd, and her
erstwhile tormentor, Joanna (Odette
Yustman), are reacquainted in their
twenties. Instead of putting the past
behind her, Marni tries to sabotage
Joanna’s impending marriage to her
brother Will (James Wolk), thinking
she’s saving him from a bully. When
we meet Marni’s mother Gail (Jamie
Lee Curtis), we discover that Gail also
holds a grudge against Joanna’s aunt
Ramona (Sigourney Weaver), a rival
who pushed her into a pool on prom
night 30 years before. Even the wise
Grandma Bunny (the ubiquitous
Betty White) harbors a resentment
towards fellow octogenarian Grandma
Helen (Cloris Leachman), who stole
a boy from her at some point during
FDR’s fi rst term.
After a series of blowouts, the three
generations of enemies realize that the
only path to happiness is for all parties
to forgive and forget. That means the
bullies apologize for past behavior,
and the victims acknowledge that even
jerks can sometimes grow up to be
kind. The lesson? Not only are grudges
tiring and unproductive, but when
pent-up resentment rears its ugly head
during a fancy rehearsal dinner, it can
result in broken dishes and smashed
wedding gifts. After that, it’s only
a matter of time before people start
stealing hogs.
TIP #2: HAVE A KID.
There is no fi rst date so disastrous
as one set up a by well-intentioned
pal. In the romantic comedy Life As
We Know It, Messer (Josh Duhamel)
and Holly (Katherine Heigl) go on
a blind date after their best friends,
who happen to be married, tell them
they’re perfect for each other. It soon
becomes apparent, however, that they
are anything but, and dinner devolves
into an insult-throwing farce. What’s
worse, the Hindenburg of a blind
date blossoms into an ongoing feud
because, instead of disappearing from
each other’s lives, the mismatched pair
must coexist at social engagements
thrown by their married buddies.
The two are fi nally forced to make
up (and grow up) when a deadly car
crash leaves them with joint custody
of their friends’ one-year-old daughter,
Sophie. Messer and Holly soon
discover that raising a child is really,
really hard—especially when both
newbie parents are over-ambitious
professionals with demanding jobs
who also happen hate each other’s guts.
Naturally, they eventually fall for each
other, and the fi lm goes on to teach
us that when a cute baby is involved,

NO MORE MR. NICE GUY From left: feeding time gets messy in
Life as We Know It; Emma Stone antagonizes Amanda Bynes in Easy A.
even bitter foes can become soul mates.
Perhaps more importantly, it teaches
us that any friend who would leave
you and your worst enemy a baby is
probably somebody you should throw
from a train.
TIP #3: GREED ACTUALLY ISN’T
ALL THAT GOOD.
In the sequel Wall Street: Money Never
Sleeps, ’80s hotshot Gordon Gekko
(Michael Douglas) doesn’t just lose his
fortune (and brick-sized mobile phone)
while in prison for insider trading; he
also loses touch with his estranged
daughter Winnie (Casey Mulligan),
who blames her absentee father’s
corporate raiding and overall oiliness
for her brother’s suicide.
It’s surprising, then, that Winnie
falls for Jake (Shia LaBeouf)—a
hotshot trader like her father. Jake
appears to value Winnie more than his
impeccably tailored suits, however, and
sets about brokering a truce between
the dysfunctional family members.
Jake hangs out with the seemingly
reformed Gekko, who is now an author
and motivational speaker. They meet
mostly on train platforms (Gekko’s
fall from glory means taking public
transportation), and Jake eventually
brings them together over an awkward
dinner. This being Wall Street, however,
Jake’s motivations are murky. He
seems far more interested in pumping
Gekko for information about his own
rival, Bretton James (Josh Brolin), a
slippery investment bank CEO, than
establishing a family reunion.
With the most severe fi nancial
meltdown in recent history as a
backdrop, Gordon, Jake and Winnie’s
friendship progresses until it becomes
clear that Gordon has some pretty
ugly motives. The lesson is simple: If
you want to make nice with a daughter
who hates you, or a girlfriend who
hates her father (or anyone, really),
greed is defi nitely not good.
TIP #4: TELL THE TRUTH...
MOSTLY.
In the late 19th-century novel The
Scarlet Letter, it’s not so much Hester
Prynne’s adulterous affair that earns
her a life of public shame; rather, it’s
her unwillingness to tell the truth
about the identity of her baby’s father.
The teen-comedy Easy A, inspired
by the Nathaniel Hawthorne classic,
fi nds Olive (Emma Stone) in a similar
predicament. After she lies about
losing her virginity, the rumors
spread, and she endures harassment
from her classmates—particularly the
zealous church group leader Marianne
(Amanda Bynes). Olive doesn’t do
herself any favors when, seeing an
opportunity for quick cash, she lets
boys at school lie about having had
sex with her in exchange for money
and gift cards. Meanwhile, her best
friend Rhiannon (Alyson Michalka)
becomes jealous of her friend’s sudden
popularity with high school boys, and
turns on her.
Some good comes out of this tangled
web when holier-than-thou Marianne
makes Olive’s salvation the pet project
of the church group, but it isn’t until
Olive disavows her reputation and
comes clean to all that she can fi nally
get along with her former enemies.
The message: It’s far easier to quiet
the rumor mill when you’re peddling
the truth.
TIP #5: ACKNOWLEDGE THAT
SOMETIMES YOU JUST CAN’T
GET ALONG.
Try as you might to be a gentleman,
sometimes you have no choice but to
get down and dirty. That’s especially
true when knocking a guy out is the
only way to win the purple-haired girl
of your dreams. In Scott Pilgrim vs. the
World, Scott Pilgrim (Michael Cera)—a
slacker bass player in an aspiring in
die band—could try to play nice with
the seven evil exes of his would-be
girlfriend Ramona (Mary Elizabeth
Winstead), but they keep trying to kill
him, which makes friendship diffi cult.
In this video game-inspired hipster
fantasy based on a graphic novel series
by Bryan Lee O’Malley, Scott has no
choice but to battle each of Ramona’s
exes one by one. He makes it through
the fi rst few alright, even defeating
one hardcore vegan by tricking him
into downing dairy products (this is
a fantasy, remember). Problems arise
when the fi nal evil ex, Gideon Graves
(Jason Schwartzman), a shady music
industry executive, offers an olive
branch in the form of a record deal
for Scott’s band—and an opportunity
for our hero to fall in line with today’s
new age buddy-buddy philosophy.
Instead, Scott fi ghts his arch-nemesis
with the help of a mythical sword
called the “Power of Self-Respect.”
Which, let’s face it, could solve a lot of
problems if it existed. We’re talking to
you, guy in the Mercedes.
