Actor Quinton Aaron got his big break
playing Michael Oher in The Blind Side
thanks to his immense talent—and size.
FOR QUINTON AARON, landing a lead role
in The Blind Side, well, blind sided him.
The Bronx-born actor—who stands
six feet, eight inches tall and weighed
more than 450 pounds when he landed
his fi rst starring role—was 24 when
he picked up and moved back to New
York from Georgia (where he had
attended middle and high school) to
try out for the talent factory American
Idol. He had been pursuing a career in
entertainment for four years, making
the rounds of fi lm and TV tryouts and
open mic nights while working as a
security guard to support himself. He
heard the same line at every audition:
He was too big for the big roles.
“Personally, I feel if you’re a good
actor you should be able to do any
role” he says. “But there weren’t roles
coming up that were for someone my
size,” he says.
And then one came along. There was
a casting call for the role of Michael
Oher—who’s currently the Baltimore
Ravens off ensive tackle—in a fi lm
adaptation of Michael Lewis’ The Blind
Side. Aaron hoped that his size would
fi nally be an advantage at an audition.
“We had a nationwide search trying
to fi nd our Michael Oher,” writerdirector
John Lee Hancock said. “To
play Michael you need a kid that can
play the sixteen, seventeen, eighteen
range and is very, very large, and can
move.... Audiences had to understand
| UNITED.COM
05
BIG
IDEAS
BY PATRICK HUGUENIN
that this is a guy that’s bigger than you
and faster than you.”
Aaron had that physicality. For
once, his intimidating frame was
an asset for something other than
working in security, and his boyish
demeanor sealed the deal. The fi lm’s
casting directors sent Hancock Aaron’s
audition tape. While he was working
security shifts at Silvercup Studios,
he got a call. He’d landed the role. It
was a bittersweet moment, because
Aaron’s mother, who told him about
the casting, had just passed away.
“Next thing I know I was being
fl own out to L.A. to meet him,” says
Aaron. “That was actually my fi rst
time on a plane.”

THE FILM FOLLOWS Oher as he’s taken in
by wealthy Memphis interior decorator
Leigh Anne Tuohy and her family.
Oher’s mother was addicted to drugs,
and he was homeless when the plucky
Tuohy picked him up one night. Having
led a diffi cult life, Oher was barely able
to communicate, and he was severely
behind in school. But the Tuohy clan
saw beyond that to an intelligent young
man with strong protective instincts.
Combined with his size, they saw,
those instincts would make him a
great football player. By nurturing his
potential on and off the football fi eld,
the Tuohys changed his life.
The movie would transform Aaron’s.
Soon after he was cast, a star was
attached to the fi lm: Sandra Bullock.
The project was about to become one
of the family favorites of 2009, not to
mention bait for awards season, and
Aaron had a starring role.
Behind the scenes, though, The
Blind Side was a challenge of football
fi eld–size proportions. Not only was
this Aaron’s fi rst lead role, but he had
to play a living person—a job that
unnerves even the most seasoned
actors. To heighten his resemblance to
the high school–aged Oher, a trainer
put Aaron on a diet and gym schedule
that helped him shed 100 pounds. But
while Bullock had multiple meetings
with the real Leigh Anne Tuohy and
GRIDIRON GANG
studied her accent with a precision
Tuohy says drove her crazy, no meeting
was arranged between Aaron and Oher.
“Michael now is not Michael then,”
says Tuohy. “Now he has so much
confi dence he thinks he could perform
brain surgery, so that was not who
they would want Quinton to emulate....
People who meet Michael today, they
never in a million years could imagine
that he was ever that quiet and shy.”
Aaron was left to look for the teenage
Oher in the script. He found a gentle
giant who struck him as familiar.
Football season may be over, but you can still feel the
excitement with four more movies based on true stories.
HAPPY FAMILY The real Tuohys and Michael Oher
“I was going to come in and work
really hard to portray this real-life
character,” he says, “but from reading
a little bit about him and from the
script, I began to feel that we had some
similarities as far as our personalities. I
felt like I just needed to be myself.”
“The only thing I told him was, ‘Don’t
try to overanalyze this,’” says Tuohy,
“‘just do it, and you’ll be fi ne, because
there’s no secret sauce here.’”
Rather than try to imitate Oher and
join the ranks of Hollywood mastermimics
such as Philip Seymour
THE EXPRESS
2008
A biopic of Ernie Davis,
the fi rst African-American
Hoff man in Capote or Jamie Foxx in Ray,
Aaron was instructed simply to work
hard and be straightforward.
“Michael was very quiet and
unassuming,” says Tuohy, “and I
almost cried the fi rst time I met Quinton
because I was like, ‘Oh my goodness,
this is Michael as we knew Michael at
the beginning.’”
THE SYMMETRY OF Aaron getting his big
break by portraying someone else’s rise
to fame was not lost on the cast. And
just as Oher found a support system in
the Tuohy household, Aaron found a
family on set. Country music star Tim
McGraw, who plays Tuohy’s husband,
Sean, in the movie, helped mitigate
Aaron’s stress over taking on his fi rst
big Hollywood role by joking and
singing with him behind the scenes. Jae
Head, who plays the youngest Tuohy,
S.J., became like a little brother to Aaron.
“I took him around everywhere
I went, and we had our own special
handshake and all that,” says Aaron.
As for Bullock, “I’ve had a crush on
her for years,” Aaron jokes, “but the
relationship we built is like mother
and son. We built up a workout plan
together: I would curl Sandra. I did it
on The View—she would lay in my arms
and I would do bicep curls with her.”
“This is how I warm up on set,” says
Aaron on stage at the daytime TV show,
his smile sheepish as his massive arms
raise and lower his co-star with no
apparent eff ort. Bullock, not a hair out
of place, eyes the camera wickedly and
says, “Gimme another ten!”
The cast used the premier circuit to
pal around and introduce one another
to their respective hometowns. McGraw
hosted one in Nashville, where the
CMA awards had taken place the night
before, and country stars such as Randy
Travis, Wynonna Judd, Kenny Chesney
and McGraw’s wife Faith Hill turned
out to see the fi lm.
Next, it was Bullock’s turn to take
the movie and its cast to New Orleans,
where she’d arranged a benefi t
screening for Warren Easton High, a
school she’s been working with since
Hurricane Katrina. Saints quarterback
Drew Brees signed autographs, and the
school’s marching band played as the
audience left the theater.
FIELD COMMANDER Quinton Aaron and Sandra Bullock in The Blind Side
07
Aaron’s reaction to the fanfare: “I
loved it.”
But the celebrations around the
fi lm’s debut were nothing compared
to the reactions once it was on screens.
“I was going to work really hard to
play this character,” Oher says.
“But I just needed to be myself.”
FUN FACT!
Whenever you hear
Leigh Anne Tuohy’s voice
from off-screen, it is the
real Tuohy, not
Sandra Bullock.
“It was crazy,” says Aaron. “Having
people come up to me and talk about
how much they loved me in the movie
and how I made them cry, it’s still
overwhelming to me.”
Not that being overwhelmed has
slowed him down. “I have a couple
things I’m working on,” he says,
sounding like an old pro. “I’m actually
working on this fi lm called The Bouncer
with a friend of mine. It was written for
me. We’re in the process of shopping
it to some producers and trying to get
it picked up. It’s an action comedy, so
I get to be funny, and I get to fi ght…
My ideal role, though? I would like to
play someone who has a very beautiful
wife,” he laughs.
Considering his road to stardom
began with him sleeping on his cousin’s
couch the night before American Idol
auditions, it seems like anything’s
possible for the talented young actor.
Hollywood is fi nally going to have to
make room for the big guy.
