SETTING
THE
SCREEN
For his fi rst leading role in Just Wright, Renaissance man
Common put down the mic and took to the court. BY HOBEY ECHLIN
THE NEW JERSEY NETS are playing to a packed house. It’s a
championship game, and fans inside the Izod Center in East
Rutherford are shouting encouragement. Queen Latifah
looks on as the Nets’ star point guard, no. 19, receives a pass,
maneuvers around Dwayne Wade of the Miami Heat and
charges the basket. He shoots and ...wait, who the heck is
No. 19? Its not Terrance Williams or hot draft pick Derrick
Favors, or, in fact, any professional basketball player. It’s a
guy who can usually be found on the stage rather than on the
court: Common, a rapper who is turning out to be more of a
Rennaissance man than anyone expected.
With eight albums, a packed live-performance schedule
and acting credits that include American Gangster, Terminator
| UNITED.COM
05
Salvation and Date Night, Common isn’t lacking fame or fortune.
He’s not the kind of guy who even needs hoop dreams, but for
his fi rst leading role, as basketball superstar Scott McKnight
(No. 19), in this month’s new release, Just Wright, he got to
achieve them anyway, performing all his own stunts with
some of the top players in the NBA. And once he picked up
the ball, he ran with it, impressing both audiences and the
players themselves.
Those audiences might not have been so surprised if they
knew Common had a head start. When the rapper (then
Lonnie Rashid Lynn) was young, he learned to play basketball
on the courts of his native Chicago. His father played for the
Denver ABA team, the Rockets, and Common himself worked

as a ballboy for the Chicago Bulls in the
mid-’80s, where he met Michael Jordan.
“I have played my whole life,” Common
says. “I actually had a dream of being an
NBA player when I was a kid.”
But once he reached adulthood,
changing his name to Common Sense
and then eventually to Common, his
ambitions followed the development
of his musical talents rather than his
basketball prowess. He released his fi rst
single, “Can I Borrow a Dollar?” in 1992
and was soon recording tracks with
such industry heavyweights as Erykah
Badu and The Roots.
Common caught the acting bug after
taking an acting class at a restless period
in his musical career. “I knew there
was more out there for me,” he says,
and after his fi rst acting class in 2001,
he’d found it. “I was really invigorated,
like, ‘this is something I want to do,’” he
says. Balancing music and acting wasn’t
easy though: To fi lm 2005’s Smokin’
Aces, Common had to cancel a tour with
Kanye West. With everything he had
going for him, Common’s dreams of
playing pro ball were essentially off
the table.
That is, until a part for a movie that
is equal parts chick fl ick and basketball
fan’s dream—a date night fi lm where
the leading man spends a sizable
amount of his screen time playing
opposite the Orlando Magic’s Rashard
Lewis and Dwight Howard and the
The real-life NBA stars that
inspired Common.
ON THE BALL Common commands the court in Just Wright.
Miami Heat’s Dwayne Wade—made its
way across his agent’s desk.
Common could easily have been
nervous about taking it. The part
was going to take a lot of acting
chops: Common would be headlining
alongside an all-star cast that included
Phylicia Rashad (“The Cosby Show”),
Pam Grier (“The L Word,” Jackie
Brown) and Academy Award-nominated
hip-hop icon Queen Latifah (Chicago).
And even if he mastered playing a point
guard who loses both his livelihood
and his girlfriend when sidelined by
injury, he’d still have to hold his own
in romantic scenes with both Latifah
and Paula Patton (who plays golddigger
and would-be basketball wife Morgan
Alexander). Plus, in order to make the
character come to life, he couldn’t just
play Scott McKnight—he had to play
like Scott McKnight.
Portraying a bona fi de NBA superstar
required months of preparation.
Remembering how to dribble, pass,
curl and sink three-pointers—against
DREAM TEAM DERRICK ROSE
JASON KIDD
VINCE CARTER
Chicago Bulls
“I’d do jazz-step a couple
of times, the footwork, the
drive—that’s Derrick Rose.”
Dallas Mavericks
“You could see Jason Kidd
in my character in how
quick he was, his court
awareness and his knack
for scoring.”
Orlando Magic
“He is one of the best
dunkers of all time, but
I defi nitely think Scott
McKnight’s behind-theback
move owes a debt of
gratitude to Vince Carter.”
LADIES’ MAN Common takes advice from director Sanaa Hamri.
some of the biggest stars on the court—
required Common to draw on physical
reserves he hadn’t been required to
use in a long time. “I probably spent as
much time training as I did with the
script,” Common laughs. “I had just
come off fi lming Date Night, where I
played this big tough guy, so I had to
trim down. I actually went swimming
a lot on my own to get lean.” That, he
says, was on top of the two hours a day
he trained with Nets assistant coach
Jimmy Sans in the two months leading
up to fi lming. “Shooting drills, ball
handling, agility drills, everything,”
he says. “Jimmy said, ‘Look, we’re
gonna treat you like an NBA player. I’m
Wade; Rajan Rondo of the Celtics—I
had a lot of conversations with these
guys,” he says. The outcome was a
sort of “swagger” mindset: “When
you’re in the NBA, you’ve made it out
of millions of people. I mean, when
you’re in the top ten players in the
world, there’s a certain confi dence that
comes with that.”
The over-the-top confi dence was
tempered by Common’s own mastery of
fame and the trappings that come with
it, which he drew on to keep McKnight
likeable. “[Both McKnight and I] are
sensitive people that grew up with a
lot of respect for our mothers and need
love, and at the same time, we’re in a
“[Hornets player] Chris Paul said, ‘I felt
like I was watching myself.’ That was a
real compliment.”
not going to work you like a guy who
has to shoot a scene, I’m going to train
you like a guy that could help a team
win a game.’”
Common also spent time researching
the lifestyles of actual NBA superstars
to develop his character. “Barren Davis
from the Clippers, who’s actually a
pretty good friend of mine; Dwayne
position of popularity with this desire
for greatness,” he says. The biggest
diff erence? “He defi nitely lives a more
lavish lifestyle than I do,” Common
says, laughing.
Another thing Common found that
he shared with NBA superstars was
the pressure of staying on top. “These
guys are very, very successful, but
| UNITED.COM
07
they’re under a tremendous amount
of pressure—mostly put on them by
themselves,” he says. “Honestly, the
thing that surprised me the most is how
injured and beat up their bodies are,
and they still go out there and work
hard,” he says. “Before I did the fi lm, I
actually had a back injury. So I went to
see a doctor that works with a lot of the
NBA teams. He told me, ‘Oh, there are
players that play with their backs hurt
like this all the time.’”
At 38, which Common says is
“ancient in NBA years,” the rapper/
actor took a bit of a beating himself,
even participating in a few yoga classes
to keep himself from landing back in
the doctor’s offi ce. “The plays, at fi rst,
were especially challenging to master,”
he says. “But once I got my feel back
for the game, it felt more natural for
me to do everything [myself]. That’s
actually when I think the character
really came alive.” Case in point: In one
scene, the script called for 6’ Common
to shoot over 6’ 11” Dwight Howard of
the Orlando Magic. Instead, an idea
came to him on the court to do a 180°
turn around Howard while changing
directions and add a behind-the-back
move to get to the basket. And that's
how it stayed in the fi lm.
After all Common’s hard work, plus
precise choreography from Hollywood
sports coordinator Mark Ellis, the
on-court scenes are so organic that
the actor is almost indistinguishable
from the cast of professional and semiprofessional
basketball players around
him. “I got a call from one of the great
point guards, Chris Paul [of the New
Orleans Hornets], and he said ‘I felt
like I was watching myself.’ That was a
real compliment.”
In fact, Common thinks basketball
fans who watch the movie, which in
many respects is a traditional “chick
fl ick,” will enjoy it as much as they
would watching an actual game. And
while he may have returned to making
records and reading scripts since
wrapping the fi lm, Common says he
won’t rule out becoming a triple threat
now that he’s gotten some experience.
“I feel like now I could be an actor, a
rapper and an NBA player,” he says.
“I’m ready for a tryout!”
