WITH A NEW MOVIE, RAMONA AND BEEZUS, BEVERLY CLEARY, THE CREATOR
OF CHILDHOOD ICON RAMONA QUIMBY, HAS CAPTURED THE ATTENTION OF
A NEW GENERATION. BY MATTHEW THOMPSON // ILLUSTRATION BY KALI CIESEMIER
WHEN RAMONA QUIMBY fi rst appeared as a minor
character in Beverly Cleary’s debut novel,
Henry Huggins, in 1950, she was just four years
old. She was still four in 1955—the same year
Disneyland opened—for her fi rst starring role
in Cleary’s Beezus and Ramona. She turned fi ve
in 1968 (around the time Apollo 8 circled the
moon), and didn’t make it to her sixth birthday
until America watched federal judges hand
down Watergate convictions in 1975. From
1977 to 1979 she was a seven-year-old, and she
fi nally reached eight when Phil Collins’ “In the
Air Tonight” hit No. 1 on the pop charts in 1981.
She turned nine shortly after Ma Bell broke up.
Though by rights she should have been applying
for her AARP card, by the time the perpetual
primary schooler fi nally turned 10 in Cleary’s
last book, Ramona Forever, it was 1999 and people
were preparing for Y2K.
Ramona Quimby had a long fi rst decade.
Today, 60 years after Henry Huggins, the
quintessential younger sister could almost
qualify for Social Security, though of course she’d
have to retire to receive it, and don’t count on that
05

happening anytime soon. Ramona, like
Cleary, the beloved writer who created
her and inspired an entire generation
of readers, isn’t slowing down. Instead,
the tiny terror (and multigenerational
icon) stars this year in her fi rst feature
fi lm. And though a lot has changed
since Ramona fi rst took to terrorizing
her sister Beatrice on Klickitat Street,
she’s the same little girl the world
fell in love with back when parents’
greatest worry was whether their
kids had fallen for The Beatles. The
tangled hair, boundless energy and
healthy family relationships haven’t
changed in more than a half a century.
“The world is a more dangerous
place,” says Cleary, “but children still
want the same things: a home, loving
parents, friends to play with, a safe
neighborhood and a pet.” And, of
course, to be a movie star.
Cleary was a librarian in rural
Washington when she started
writing—mostly in response to
complaints she got from her younger
patrons about the lack of books that
accurately refl ected their lives. A
lifelong reader, she wanted to pass
her enjoyment of books on to a new
generation. “I was fortunate. I could
walk to the branch library alone, so I
read a lot,” she says. “Sometimes two
books at the same time!” Taking bits
SITTING PRETTY Beverly Cleary as
a young girl.
from her own childhood and from
her twin son and daughter’s lives,
Cleary crafted a world that was almost
uncanny in its familiarity. “I couldn’t
write about Ramona in kindergarten
until my children actually went there,”
she says, “Because I hadn’t gone to
kindergarten and didn’t have any
memories of it. If I wrote anything that
came out of their experience, I read it
EYE TO EYE Joey King and Selena Gomez wage a staring contest in Ramona and Beezus.
to them to see if they approved or if I
had it right.”
That obsession with realism led
Cleary to one of her most inspired
decisions: setting the books on a
very real street in Portland, Oregon.
Unlike Robert McCloskey’s quaintly
nostalgic Midwest or Madeleine
L’Engle’s psychedelic alien planets,
Cleary populated a place that her
readers could actually visit. Even
today, Klickitat Street is open to traffi c
(though Cleary says, “Now there are
probably a few more television aerials
and cars parked along it”). Nearby
Grant Park looks much the same as
the characters would have seen it in
the original book, though they would
likely be surprised to fi nd life-size
statues of themselves just south of
the playground.
In the end, all of Cleary’s diligence
paid off . Her initial manuscript
was accepted by the fi rst publisher
she sent it to, and the stories she
created—about schoolyard crushes,
auditioning for Christmas plays and
squeezing entire tubes of toothpaste
into the sink—still strike a chord with
children six decades later. To date, the
Ramona books have been translated
into 14 languages and have combined
worldwide sales topping 30 million
copies. Every title is still in print. In
the 1980s, the books were adapted
into a much-loved TV series (at times
written by Cleary herself). Through
it all, the writer has garnered two
Newbury Honors and a National Book
Award and been designated a “Living
Legend” by the Library of Congress.
Not bad for a writer who never
attended kindergarten.
So, why has it taken so long to
bring Cleary’s greatest creation to the
big screen? Credit the writer’s lack
of interest in a quick buck. Having
long declined all opportunities to
merchandise the Ramona brand—
once declaring, “I’m not interested in
turning children into consumers”—
she’s shown the same restraint in
adapting the books to the big screen.
Before director Elizabeth Allen got
a crack at interpreting Beezus and
Ramona, she had to convince Cleary of
her good intentions. “Elizabeth wrote

CLOCKWISE FROM BOTTOM LEFT: PHOTOGRAPH BY ALAN MARKFIELD/COURTESY OF TWENTIETH
CENTURY FOX AND WALDEN MEDIA, COURTESY OF HARPER COLLINS CHILDREN’S BOOKS (3)
me lovely letters and came up to talk
to me until I felt that I could trust her,”
Cleary says. “Her vision of Ramona
agreed with mine.” Even so, ever-wary
Cleary asked for changes to be made to
the script here and there to refl ect the
Ramona she knew.
The result is an amalgam of old
and new. While fans of the books
will recognize some anecdotes from
the series, others had to be scrapped
or changed to refl ect the changing
times. Gone is Ramona’s campaign to
convince her father to quit smoking—
after all, what self-respecting dad
would smoke around the house these
days? And while Ramona is played
by newcomer Joey King, the roles
of Beezus and Henry Huggins went
to Disney Channel vets (and tween
heartthrobs) Selena Gomez and Hutch
Dano, respectively.
Cleary may not have predicted
which fresh-faced actors would
interpret the Quimbys, but she
has nothing but praise for their
performances. “I thought Joey King
was a remarkable little actress,” she
says. Does she think that King showed
her anything new about the character?
“I already knew Ramona pretty well,”
Cleary laughs.
So do most of Cleary’s fans. The
most interesting thing about Ramona
helicoptering over their children’s
social calendars like jumpy jailers,
the idea of unsupervised minors
just playing is not just diff erent, it’s
downright iconoclastic.
That’s a fact that Cleary mourns.
“Fewer children play outside today,”
she says, a bit wistfully. “I’ve had
children who can’t play outside write
wishing they could live in Henry and
“I’m not interested in turning children
into consumers,” Cleary says.
is that she never changes, even as the
world changes around her. And, as
a result, this little girl who was once
so exceptional in her typicalness has
become something extraordinary as
the years have passed. As the outside
world keeps up with the times—
working moms, second marriages and
economic unease as the era dictates—
Ramona is still living a simple life,
at home in her imagination (which is
lovingly rendered by Allen through
sequences of jerky stop-motion
animation), and that somehow makes
the world outside her window seem
like a slightly tragic place to be. In an
age of hockey moms and soccer dads
AND WHEN SHE WAS BAD, SHE WAS HORRID Cover art and an
llustration of Ramona’s antics.
Ramona’s neighborhood. I’ve received
letters from grown-ups saying that
my books gave them hope that there
were safer places to live than where
they lived as children.” Cleary should
know: She answered every piece of fan
mail individually for the fi rst 30 years
of her career, until the sheer scope of
her popularity made it impossible.
Playing outside isn’t the only thing
that’s changed during Ramona’s
lifetime. Cleary bemoans a new
generation of kid-lit that’s tossed aside
the value of realism in favor of magical
boarding schools and sexy vampires.
“I rarely read a children’s book these
days,” says Cleary. “But I do read
| UNITED.COM
07
reviews, and it seems to me that they
have lost a sense of joy.” (Cleary, for her
part, prefers The First Ladies Detective
Club series and autobiographies.)
What’s next for Ramona? Well, don’t
expect another book anytime soon.
Though the author announced in
2006 that she’d fi nished an outline for
another novel, she also revealed that
she does not actually plan to write it.
That’s a decision she stands by today.
“I just feel that there comes a time
when a writer should stop,” she says.
“And the writer should choose that
time.” Chock it up to her no nonsense
work ethic, which wouldn’t even
permit her to accept advances. “I never
signed a contract until the book was
actually written,” she explains.
In a way then, Ramona and Beezus
represents the future of Ramona
Quimby. With no books in the
pipeline, the girl is forced to go digital,
streaming straight out of print and
onto the screen. But as a blueprint for
a certain kind of anarchic, eight-yearold
normalcy, she’s hardly reached her
end. Maybe she’ll pop up in another
few decades, a reassuring fi gure for
children who sometimes misbehave,
and a reminder to parents to cool it:
Kids will be kids. Who knows, maybe
she’ll even be 12 by then.

Our best headphones. Since we introduced the world’s
first noise cancelling headphones over 20 years ago, we have
conducted continuous research to improve this technology. Now,
we have engineered significant advances in noise reduction to
make the QC ® 15 headphones our quietest ever. Exclusive Bose
technologies electronically sense more of the sounds around
you, reducing more noise across a wider range of frequencies.
And we didn’t stop there. We developed an ear cushion that
further reduces unwanted noise and helps create an extremely
comfortable fit. It works in harmony with the electronics
to deliver a better listening experience. ExecDigital.com
says they are “easily the best headphone available” and
Murray Hill of Canada.com calls them “fabulous.”
