FROM
RUSSIA
WITH LOVE
After more than half a century in show biz, Christopher Plummer
fi nally got an Oscar nomination for playing Leo Tolstoy. So can we
stop calling him Captain Von Trapp now? // BY MATT THOMPSON
FORTY-FIVE YEARS AFTER landing the
role Captain Georg Von Trapp in The
Sound of Music, Christopher Plummer
is still fi ghting Nazis—most recently at
this year’s Academy Awards. The star
listened to Penelope Cruz call out the
nominees for Best Supporting Actor
with a pensive, Zen-like calm. It was his
fi rst Oscar nomination. Cruz slit open
the envelope. “And the winner is…”
For many people, it would have been
impossible to keep their nerves in
check. But, despite praise for his role
as Russian novelist Leo Tolstoy in
The Last Station, Plummer had known
for weeks that odds-makers were
predicting that Christoph Waltz
would walk away with the statuette
for his chilling performance as a Nazi
offi cer in Inglourious Basterds. So, when
05
Cruz fi nally called out Waltz’s name,
Plummer gave a subtle smile and a
hearty round of applause.
It would be easy to feel sympathy for
Plummer. After all, the acclaimed actor
of stage and fi lm had a 51-year wait
between his fi rst big-screen role and
his fi rst Oscar nomination. With more
than 180 acting credits to his name (not
counting his plays), he has inhabited

such diverse roles as Aristotle, Rudyard
Kipling and Star Trek’s General
Chang. He has played every major
Shakespearean lead except for Falstaff
of Henry IV. Yet he is still best known
as Captain Von Trapp—a situation he
hasn’t always been happy about.
“My feelings toward that musical
have softened,” Plummer says. That’s
an understatement. In the past, the
actor has spoken derisively of the fi lm,
referring to it as “The Sound of Mucus.”
Now, however, he seems to harbor no ill
will. “I didn’t ever think my role was the
most exciting role,” he says. “The fi lm
itself was very well done. There haven’t
been many family movies to match it,
if any. But if you look at all the parts
I’ve played through the years, you can
hardly put Captain Von Trapp as one
of the greats.”
That much is evident in his work
last year alone. In addition to his role
in The Last Station, he starred opposite
Heath Ledger in Terry Gilliam’s The
Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus; he
voiced Charles F. Muntz, the supervillain
in Pixar’s Up; and he played a
talking burlap doll called “1” in the
Tim Burton-produced animated fi lm 9.
It’s a wildly varied range of styles and
genres, something that Plummer seems
to take pride in. When asked whether
there’s anything to thematically tie
these fi lms together, he bursts out
laughing. “I think you are desperately
SOMEONE CALL
A PLUMMER
The acclaimed actor has been in too many
fi lms to list here, but we’ve rounded up a few
highlights from which you might recognize him.
work, but it can’t be done!” he says.
“Everything I’ve acted in is completely
diff erent. And I’ve done them all for no
other reason than to have a great deal of
fun and make a living.”
Plummer’s path to fi lm legend status
began in Toronto, where he was born
in 1929 to Isabella Mary Plummer and
John Orme Plummer, both academics
at McGill University. He was raised
in Montreal where he studied to be a
concert pianist before acting captured
his interest. After working for a few
years with local repertory companies in
Canada, Plummer moved to Bermuda
to join a theater troupe.
It was in Bermuda that Plummer was
discovered—twice. The actor explains,
“Rose Chatterton was a huge star of
the theater in the twenties and early
thirties. She joined our company as a
visiting star and told me, ‘You’ve got a
career in front of you. When you get to
New York, please look me up.’” Weeks
later, a similar conversation occurred
with legendary stage star Edward
Everett Horton (whom you might
know as the narrator of “Fractured
FairyTales” on Rocky and Bullwinkle),
who invited Plummer to join him for a
national tour with his company.
After a year on the road with Horton,
Plummer arrived in New York. “I still
had Rose’s phone number, and I decided
to take her up on her off er and called
1969
Squadron Leader Colin Harvey
Battle of Britain
1975
Rudyard Kipling
The Man Who Would Be King
her,” he says. “She introduced me to just
about every important person in theater
and society. She put me in touch with
Katharine Cornell, one of the last great
actresses-slash-managers. Katharine
had her own private train, and the next
thing I knew, we were riding around in
it! They treated us like royalty!”
Thus began Christopher Plummer’s
ascension into what he describes as
“Broadway’s last golden age.” He sighs,
thinking about it. “We had a marvelous
time. That’s what New York was all
about. Everybody drank like fi ends. Life
began at midnight, after the show was
over. Talk about style! There was style
in those days.” The stories of that era
have since become the stuff of legend:
dinners with Elia Kazan, Michael
Burton, Tyrone Power and Jason
Robards; and a Broadway so vital that
if you screwed up a line, Tennessee
Williams might heckle you from
the balcony.
It was too good to last. “Broadway
changed in the middle of the sixties,”
Plummer says sadly. “I came back from
a tour in London to fi nd that things had
changed, that audiences had changed,
that money had changed. New York is
not the same city that it was back then.
Not by a long shot.”
It’s a sentiment that Plummer echoes
about much of the entertainment world.
What does he think about the current
crop of Hollywood partiers’ exploits?
1975
1981
Dial M for Murder

Pathetic compared to the old days.
“There was a great deal of camaraderie
in Hollywood when it was a smaller
place,” he says. “We all went out in
those days and had fun. It didn’t matter
who you were. There wasn’t a sort of
class system among Hollywood A-list,
B-list and C-list. Now that it’s run by big
business rather than show business a
lot of the fun has gone out of it. There’s
hardly any mystery left. Everything has
become so…ordinary.”
So, then, perhaps it’s up to his fi lms
to set things right. In The Imaginarium
of Doctor Parnassus he plays a (in his
words) “ridiculous old drunk” who
runs a traveling stage show that
competes with the devil—played
to gravel-voiced perfection by Tom
Waits—for the souls of his audience
members. It’s a role Plummer says he
relished creating. “There’s an awful
lot of improvisation in a Terry Gilliam
movie,” he says. “The script isn’t really
polished when you get the fi rst draft so
you get to make it up a bit as you go. I’m
crazy about Terry as a director: he’s got
an immense imagination. He and I get
along like a house on fi re when we’re
together on set.” And though Heath
Ledger’s death during production
has dominated press coverage of the
fi lm, Plummer seems determined to
remember it as a good experience. In
describing Ledger’s passing, Plummer
seems for the fi rst time at a loss for
words. He pauses, searching for the
right phrase, before saying softly, “It
wasn’t much fun.”
Perhaps more fun was acting
opposite Helen Mirren in The Last
Station. The two big-screen icons have
made great hay out of teasing each
other about their age (“He makes fun of
my bad back and I make fun of his bad
knee,” said Mirren during a pre-Oscar
interview), and Plummer singles out
their bedroom scenes together as being
“Everything I’ve acted in is completely
different, and I’ve done them all for no
other reason than to have fun.”
particularly humorous. “Tolstoy’s not
really thought of as a fun character,”
he tells me, “But I wanted to give him
as much humanity and humor as I
could. If you have a lot of humanity, I
think you also must have a great sense
of humor to go with it. So [director]
Michael Hoff man and I found some
scenes to make it fun.”
for bringing the world of Tolstoy to
life. “I hate seeing people”—here he
puts on a dramatic James Bond villain
accent—“trying to doo Roossian. It’s
just awful!” The actors spoke in their
natural voices, he explains, to give
the fi lm an untranslated feel. And it
worked. Plummer recalls an interview
with a Russian journalist who told him
that he “felt the fi lm was in Russian.”
On can practically hear him beaming
through the phone. “That’s the way to
do a foreign language fi lm,” he says,
confi dently. Then he laughs. “Unless,
of course, you’re Christoph Waltz, who
can speak perfect English, French,
Italian and German all at the same time.
It’s totally unfair!”
So are there sour grapes toward
the Austrian actor who received the
Oscar? Plummer, ever the pro, laughs.
“My friends all called me and said, ‘Oh,
you must be so disappointed.’ And
I said, ‘What are you talking about?
Of course I’m not disappointed. I was
nominated!’” For him, he explains,
being recognized as one of the top
fi ve actors in his category was prize
enough. “You usually can’t compare
fi ve people and their performances,
because they’re so diff erent,” he muses.
“So how could one really be better than
all the others?” He laughs ruefully, “I
wish everyone could have gone home
with half an Oscar!” Sounds like an
interesting fi lm premise.
Quieter than ever before.
Introducing Bose ®
QuietComfort ®
15 Acoustic Noise Cancelling ®
headphones.
Our best headphones. Since we introduced the world’s
first noise cancelling headphones over 20 years ago, we
have conducted continuous research to improve this technology.
Now, we have engineered significant advances
in noise reduction to make the QC ® 15 headphones our
quietest ever. Exclusive Bose technologies electronically
sense more of the sounds around you, reducing more
noise across a wider range of frequencies. And we didn’t
stop there. We developed a new ear cushion that further
reduces unwanted noise and helps create an extremely
comfortable fit. It works in harmony with the electronics
to deliver a better listening experience. Mark A. Kellner
of The Washington Times says they “reproduce music with
extreme clarity, fidelity and definition.”
