YOUNG
AT HEART
As a recent crop of
Hollywood romances
teaches us, fi nding
love after your
twenties is easier
than it looks.
BY ADAM K RAYMOND
BACK IN THE DAYS of petticoats and dress
stays, the average American woman
became a bride by the time she was 22 years
old. Today, that age has risen to 25, even
later for ladies who live in metropolises
or have advanced degrees. Whether it’s
the eff ect of more women in the workplace
or just more options, the classic story of
teenagers falling desperately in love and
staying together forever is becoming less
and less plausible.
In real life, fi nding a mate when you’re
more established has its perks. People who
fall in love when they’re older are less likely
to get divorced; then again, they may never
face the kinds of ordeals—like a blood
feud between their parents (Romeo and
Juliet) or an arranged marriage (Tristan
and Isolde)—that make for storybook
romance. Let’s face it: A love aff air between
middle aged lawyers who buy a nice place
in Greenwich village just doesn’t make for a
summer blockbuster. Or, at least, that’s the
way it’s always been.
But times are changing. Maybe
Hollywood recognizes that audiences
are hungry for something relatable or
maybe Nicholas Sparks is on vacation, but
whatever the reason, women in movies, like
their real life counterparts, are waiting later
in life to fi nd love, and with their tips, so can
you. After poring through six movies (four
recent, one not so recent and one downright
classic) we’ve found six foolproof tips for
fi nding late-in-life love without resorting to
speed dating, blind dating or (gasp) being
seen in nightclubs.

RULE #1: GIVE UP
The Back-Up Plan shows us that giving up
on the hunt for love is the one sure way
to fi nd it. The fi lm’s star, cosmopolitan
career woman Zoe (Jennifer Lopez) is
39, frustrated with the succession of Mr.
Wrongs she’s dated and ready to throw
in the towel on romance. So that’s exactly
what she does. But for Zoe, giving up
on love doesn’t mean giving up on life.
It means resorting to her back-up plan,
which includes two important steps.
First, there’s accepting that she’ll forever
view Valentine’s Day candies with a deep
and ritualistic loathing. And second,
there’s artifi cial insemination. Because
Zoe can’t meet a man who’s suitable to
father her children, she’ll pick one out
of a catalog.
And then, bam! That’s when it
happens. Just as Zoe has fi rmly moved
onto her Plan B, Plan A rears its
handsome head in the form of funny,
charming, studly Stan (Alex O’Loughlin).
As they grow closer, Zoe’s secret comes
out and, this being Hollywood, things
end happily ever after. The obvious
lesson here is that if you’ve spent most of
your life looking for the elusive Mr. Right,
stop looking and you’ll probably fi nd
him in the back of a cab. It’s just one of the
many ways that love is like your keys.
RULE #2: GO ON VACATION
There’s no question that negotiating
unfamiliar terrain is a smart way to
bond with whatshisname, but with a
bevy of hard-bodied foreign men with
adorable accents (you’ve seen Y tu Mama
Tambien, haven’t you?), other countries
are also ideal places to visit when you’re
on the market.
clutching a potential suitor’s hand in
terror... I mean, passion.
The path to Claire’s road trip is a
complicated one. It starts in Verona,
Italy, in 1957. She and a devilishly
handsome young Italian (aren’t they
all?) named Lorenzo fall madly in
puppy love. But just as Claire and
Lorenzo plan to run away together,
she gets cold feet and leaves a letter for
Juliet Capulet on a wall where lovers
ask the Shakespearean character for
advice. Despite the silliness of expecting
a fi ctional character to solve your
relationship problems because you
littered in an Italian courtyard, Claire’s
letter is discovered 50 years later by
Sophie (Amanda Seyfried), a young
American girl who tracks Claire down
and convinces her to return to Italy to
fi nd Lorenzo.
That’s where
“Find yourself a cute kid and
you’ve got a mini man magnet.”
Full of lush vineyards and endless
rolling hills, Italy is the ideal location
for such a trip, as septuagenarian
Claire (Vanessa Redgrave) teaches
us in Letters to Juliet. The country is a
legendary romantic paradise, inspiring
everyone from Dante to Shakespeare
to write about perfect love. It also is
studded with crumbling farmhouse
inns and tiny cafés, and has plenty of
winding country roads to zip over while
1
NOT WHAT SHE WAS EXPECTING J. Lo falls for Alex O’Loughlin in The Back-Up Plan.
the road trip
comes in. Claire
arrives with
her grumpy
but adorable grandson and sets off on
a quest through the countryside with
Sophie to fi nd her Romeo. Based on the
sheer number of striking, deeply tanned
men they encounter in their search,
it’s clear that even an entire bus full of
women traveling through Italy will fi nd
ideal mates. And if somehow they can’t
fi nd that right guy, we hear they have
wine worth falling in love with. Don’t
even get us started on the cheese.
RULE #3: SEDUCE YOUR BOSS
Yes, it sounds like a terrible idea. Yes,
we have heard of sexual harassment. Yes,
it might be a surefi re way to spend the
next three weeks scouring Monster.com.
But stick with us here and you’ll see why
dating your boss can be one of the easiest
ways to ensure that you’ll get a good man.
First of all, you know he has a decent job:
He is your boss, after all. You also know
you’ll always have something to talk
about, even if it’s who just got the worst
haircut in the offi ce. And lastly, you’ll always
know when he’s actually “working
late,” versus taking shots with that cute
cocktail waitress.
The drama Mother and Child shows
exactly how to execute this strategy.
Elizabeth (Naomi Watts) lands a job
working for a sophisticated, bow-tiewearing
lawyer named Paul (Samuel
L. Jackson). Paul is intelligent and
challenging. You know, the type of guy
who wears a bowtie. As Elizabeth’s
intellectual equal, he questions her
personal beliefs. She responds by
seducing him. However, Elizabeth clearly
has an advantage in the dating situation:
Her boss is super smooth Samuel L.
Jackson, which isn’t something that most
women can say. If your boss isn’t really
your type, perhaps you should expand
your dating pool and ...
RULE #4: DEVELOP A CRUSH
ON A CO-WORKER
Again, bringing romance into the

workplace may go against all measures
of professionalism, but remember
you’re against the clock. If you want to
avoid being single in your 50s, you may
have to relax a few of those rules you’ve
been staunchly adhering to.
For this strategy to work, it helps if
you’re in a profession that encourages
closeness between employees. That’s
the situation in which Kate (Demi
Moore) and Steve Jones (David
Duchovny) fi nd themselves in The
Joneses. Though to the neighbors they
appear to be a married couple with
two well-adjusted kids, Kate and Steve
Jones are actually co-workers, brought
together by a large marketing fi rm.
Their mission: Pretend to be the perfect
family with the perfect things and use
that perceived perfection to market
luxury products to all of their friends.
As jobs go, it might be the perfect
breeding ground for love. Just imagine:
You see each other every day, you
already know how he’ll deal with
hormonal teenagers and you don’t have
to plan a wedding because everyone
thinks you’ve been married for years.
The lesson to take away from this is
simple: If you like a co-worker and you
wouldn’t mind walking toward him at
the end of an aisle, start working on a
project that requires you to pretend to be
married. It works every time.
RULE #5: HAVE A CUTE KID
Men like to pretend like they don’t like
kids. But what men really don’t like
are ugly kids. Cute kids are a diff erent
story. Find yourself a tow-headed source
of silly quotes (preferably one with
glasses—older men have a soft spot for
kids that remind them of themselves) and
you’ve got a mini man magnet. In Jerry
Maguire, Dorothy Boyd (Renee Zellweger)
has one of the cutest kids who ever lived.
Played by Jonathan Lipnicki (who’s an
astonishing 19 years old now) Ray is a
precocious, spiky-haired little boy given
to spouting out random facts about the
human head. Sounds adorable, doesn’t it?
As Dorothy and Jerry (Tom Cruise)
spend more time together, so too do Jerry
and Ray. And since a male’s emotional
capacity doesn’t grow much between six
and 36, they become best friends, which
helps Jerry see that Dorothy completes
him. Sure, it’s a little too perfect to
happen in real life, but it does give hope to
every woman looking for love while she’s
2
raising a six-year-old future neurologist.
RULE #6: DON’T BE SO FOCUSED ON YOUR
CAREER THAT YOU MISS THE ULTIMATE MAN
A young woman can afford to pass on
a chance at love to focus on work. That
may not be the case for those who have
become long in the skirt. So, if you’re
