It’s never been more exciting to fl y with Jetstar, especially with our brand-new
improvements created specifi cally to serve you better, like:
•Giving our customers better service, options and a hassle-free airport experience.
We’re the fi rst airline in Australia and New Zealand to introduce full self-service
technology at all domestic airports. This includes check-in kiosks, convenient
SMS boarding passes that work on any mobile phone and web/automatic
check-in when you make your booking;
•Introducing new fare products with greater choices. You now have the chance to
make your fares even lower by selecting only the services you want. Other features
include more options to earn Qantas Frequent Flyer points/status credits, more
fl exible checked-baggage options and more business-class fare options;
•Announcing more low-fare fl ights. In July, we’re taking off to Dunedin,
New Zealand, with direct services from Auckland. We’re also growing our
fl eet, with our 13th A320 aircraft based at Singapore’s Changi Airport.
So sit back, relax and enjoy
another hassle-free journey.
HOT WINTER
WARMERS
HIGH FLIER
Circus Oz is back — inspired
by the quirky, edgy world of
steampunk: where romance and
technology meet, and where
all is handmade and powered
by steam. Flip Kammerer, who
performs on straps, speaks up.
WHAT’S YOUR DAY LIKE?
It depends. I can be training
for seven hours a day in Port
Melbourne one week, and the
next, waking up in Madrid to
coffee and churros.
WHY DO YOU LIKE STRAPS?
It requires a lot of upper body
strength. When I was young,
I was told that girls couldn’t
do straps, as they don’t have
enough strength. I set myself
this challenge, and now I’m
one of only a few girls who
perform straps in Australia. It’s
exhilarating to hold yourself up
by your arms fi ve metres above
the ground, and then let go.
DO YOU PREFER GROUP
OR SOLO STUNTS?
Group stunts. If you’ve got
a good team, it’s satisfying
interacting with everyone on
stage, and knowing they’ll catch
you if you fall.
FLY GIRL
As Australian long-distance
prepares for the challenging
Inov-8 Coastal Classic, she
chats with us.
WHY THE HAIR COLOUR?
Running with hundreds of
other girls in the US was
overwhelming; I decided to
dye my hair pink to stand out.
WHAT ARE THE DIFFICULTIES
OF THE STEEPLECHASE?
The barriers. The key is in
not losing your rhythm, and
meeting the barriers at the
right take-off point.
HOW DOES IT FEEL TO
REPRESENT AUSTRALIA?
It’s an honour. I want to
be a great example as an
Australian, not just an athlete.
WHAT’S YOUR LAST THOUGHT
BEFORE THE COMPETITION?
I think of myself as a coiled
spring, like the scene in
Gallipoli. It’s interesting as I
was born on ANZAC Day.
10 MINUTES
WITH...
CATHERINE
BRITT
With a new single from her ARIAnominated
album out, the Aussie
songbird talks to us mid-tour
WHAT’S THE STORY BEHIND YOUR
NEW SINGLE “I WANT YOU BACK”?
This was the result of the fi rst time
Bill Chambers and I sat down to
write together. When I was writing
my new album, I called Bill and said
we were going to write together,
and that it wasn’t negotiable! We
were both very happy with it, so it’s
become my third single. We have
written many times together since,
but it took us 12 years to write this
fi rst one. The wait was well worth it!
WAS COUNTRY THE ONLY TYPE OF
MUSIC YOU WANTED TO DO?
Not at all. In fact, I didn’t even make
a conscious decision to be a country
artist. My father used to play lots
of Emmylou Harris, Hank Williams
and Gram Parsons, so my love for
country was probably inevitable.
DESCRIBE YOUR MUSIC.
I’m a singer/songwriter whose style
ranges from straight country to
hillbilly to folk to blues to rock to
pop: a good mix!
ARE YOU MORE INSPIRED WHEN
YOU’RE SAD OR HAPPY?
Defi nitely when I’m sad. When I’m
happy, I’d much rather be at the
010
beach or hang out with my friends,
but when I’m feeling sad, it all fl ows
out on paper.
WHAT’S ESSENTIAL WHEN YOU’RE
WRITING A SONG?
I don’t really have any rituals, but
I always have my guitar with me.
But sometimes a song or lyrics
just come to you, so you just grab
anything to get it down. Some of my
best songs started out as a simple
lyric written on a scrap of paper.
MY TOP
SPOTS
Bali to relax
and do some
cheap shopping;
Melbourne to
visit my brother
and his family;
Brisbane to visit
friends; and
Darwin for a
nice holiday!
WHAT’S NEXT FOR YOU?
I’m looking into acting projects and
writing for my next album. There’s
also a side project I’m excited about
but can’t reveal now. I’m also going
to continue doing music work with
autism and children in schools,
which I love — it’s extremely
satisfying and rewarding.
Want to bring
back a piece of
Hard Rock Café
to remember the
place by? Then
stop by Level 1.
There, the Rock
Shop stocks
Hard Rock
merchandise:
T-shirts, other
rock-inspired
apparel and
Hard Rock’s
signature
collectors’ pins.
ROCKIN’
STRONG
The fi rst Hard Rock Café
opened in a Rolls-Royce
showroom in London in
1971, with Eric Clapton
donating a guitar to a
memorabilia collection that
now contains 73,000 items.
Hard Rock is opening in
Darling Harbour, Sydney,
this month, marking the
40th anniversary of the
brand. The 500-seat café
features top views, and
memorabilia from Elvis
Presley, John Lennon, Jimi
Hendrix, Sex Pistols, The
Black Eyed Peas, AC/DC and
Britney Spears.
The menu showcases
fresh Aussie produce in
American-diner fare, like
Sydney’s latest craze,
pulled pork sandwiches.
There’s also a cocktail bar
and regular live music gigs.
Lennie Huntly, co-owner
of the Surfers Paradise and
Sydney cafés, says: “It was
time to bring the brand
OUT &
ABOUT
GORGEOUS
GEORGE
As MasterChef fever heats
up, we talk to judge and chef
George Calombaris about the new
series of the hit show and his
latest restaurant in Melbourne,
St Katherine’s
ANYTHING NEW OR DIFFERENT IN
SEASON THREE TO TELL US?
We have some amazing new
challenges and world-class chefs.
We’re also going more back to the
grass roots of cooking I think…
more soul, more humility and
more love for food. And chef Matt
Moran is joining the team this
series as a regular judge.
HOW DO YOU THINK THE
SHOW’S CHANGED?
It keeps getting better — this
year’s contestants are of a higher
standard than previously as
APPLIED TO APPEAR ON SEASON
THREE OF MASTERCHEF
we’re attracting more passionate,
talented contestants. As judges,
we’re always pushing ourselves to
make the show better.
HOW DO YOU DECIDE ON THE
FINAL 300 CONTESTANTS?
First, they bring along a cold dish
that they’ve already prepared;
if it has potential, they get an
interview with the producers, who
select those with the skills and
commitment. Those applicants
then come and cook for me, Gary
[Mehigan] and Matt [Preston], who
select the ones who can really cook.
WHAT DOES A MASTECHEF
CONTESTANT NEED TO HAVE?
They need to be able to cook well
of course, but it’s just as crucial
DON’T
MISS
THIS
The wine list at
St Katherine’s
is special.
Calombaris
shares: “We’re
sourcing
wines from
local regions
and abroad,
including Greece
and Malta. Our
cocktail list will
feature classic
cocktails with
a twist... think
strawberry and
sumac iced tea!”
that they want to contribute
to the food industry. It’s very
important to have the ability
to communicate passion to
others. They also need to be
comfortable on camera, and
understand it takes many
months to fi lm each series.
WHAT’S THE IDEA BEHIND
ST KATHERINE’S?
It’s the brainchild of Shane
Delia (my mate and business
partner from Maha) and
myself. It’s about modern
Greek, Turkish and Middle
Eastern cultures and food
done in a fun, modern way.
WHY IS THERE A TREND
TOWARDS SHARED PLATES?
Sharing food is normal in
many cultures. It makes a
meal more of a celebration
when you share food.
IS ST KATHERINE’S MORE
THAN JUST A RESTAURANT?
Yes, we also have the private
dining room St Kat’s Upstairs,
which doubles as a cooking
demonstration kitchen — so
guests can watch what’s
going on, and even talk
with the chefs while they
work. My plan is do to all
my recipe development up
there, and also hold cooking
demonstrations for all ages
with lots of chefs.
to us.
CONGRATULATIONS! WHAT PUT
YOU AHEAD OF THE REST?
My coach and I spent our time
in the lead-up working on the
tricks I could do, and ensuring
they were big, clean and smooth
instead of trying to throw in
something new, and it’s paid off!
WHAT’S GOOD ABOUT PERISHER?
Perisher covers a large area
of mountain, which gives it a
great range of terrain — so it’s
great for all levels and ideal
for families!
AT WHAT AGE SHOULD PEOPLE
PICK UP SNOWBOARDING?
I always suggest that people
learn to ski fi rst. This can
be done at the age of three
or 50, although the earlier
the better. From there, the
transition to snowboarding
should come naturally.
WHAT GEAR IS ESSENTIAL
TO HAVE?
Having good goggles that
don’t fog is very important.
Keep yourself warm, and
make sure your snowboard,
boots and bindings have been
Sukin Organics’ good quality,
sustainable skincare has been a
recipe for success, says general
manager Alison Goodger (right)
HOW WERE YOU INVOLVED IN THE
START OF THE BRAND?
Sukin was launched in July 2007,
and was co-founded and managed
by my dad Peter O’Connor, my
brother Simon and myself. Prior
to Sukin, we all had experience in
either skincare, distribution, sales
or graphic design — so we were all
able to draw from our experiences,
resources and connections, and
work together to take the brand
from concept to reality. We started
with a clear checklist on what skin
and haircare products should not
contain, and went about formulating
and creating an entire hair, face and
body range based on that. We also
surrounded ourselves with positive,
proactive associates and employees
who shared our business vision.
HOW HAS SUKIN DEVELOPED, AND
WHY DOES IT RESONATE WITH
YOUR CUSTOMERS?
Our customers are often pleasantly
surprised at how effective our
products are, given they’re so
reasonably priced. The perception
is that consumers are willing to
pay more for products if they feel
good about the purchase. But our
customers are too savvy to be
fooled that way. They play a large
your customers;
know your
competitors;
surround
yourself with
proactive
people; and
most of all,
enjoy what
part in our product development
and marketing. We communicate
via various social-media platforms
and e-marketing media, and launch
new products based on customer
requests. This gives them a sense of
connection to the Sukin brand.
HOW SUSTAINABLE IS SUKIN?
We’re a proudly 100% carbonneutral
brand. We take steps to
reduce any carbon emissions and
purchase carbon credits to offset
them. We also ensure that our
are recyclable, our products free
from animal byproducts, and all
our ingredients are biodegradable.
Hence our tagline: “Skincare that
Our customers asked for it! They
TOP TIP
Our advice?
Get a car with
a driver and go
explore this
beautiful Island
of the Gods. Your
driver will know
the best route
and be more
skilled at
managing the
traffi c. First up,
negotiate the
journey, duration
and price. Then
sit back and
enjoy the ride!
You’ll fi nd pristine white sand
beaches at Sanur, with perfect surf
conditions. Its lagoon offers sailing
in traditional Balinese jukungs, kite
surfi ng, stand-up paddle boarding
and wakeboarding. It’s where you’ll
fi nd major dive centres — dive
boats leave daily for dive spots in
Nusa Pendia and Padang Bai.
There’s also a nine-hole golf
course at the Grand Bali Beach
hotel, and amazing restaurants and
bars, including Batu Jembar, The
Village and Massimo’s.
MORGANA REID
some great designer shops and
restaurants too. A delightful horse
ride through rice fi elds or on the
beach can be arranged with Umalas
Equestrian Resort.
A 35-minute boat trip to lovely
Lembongan or a Bounty Ship cruise
to Lombok are also great ideas.
Must-sees for the kids include the
Seminyak’s trendy boutiques offer
locally made items, often designed
the quality is high. At Jimbaran’s
seafood restaurants, you can
choose the catch of the day, have
it seasoned with spices and grilled.
Ubud, Bali’s centre for arts and
knocked it out of the park. They
told me it was going to be a breeze,
drinking coff ee and watching
the guys race, but the race is the
busiest you’ll ever be in your life,”
he laughs good-naturedly. With
a travelling team of about 80
permanent crew members and
an extra 80 local crew members
STAR STRUCK //
in each host country, Network
Seven’s blockbuster reality show
is a mammoth production.
“The logistics and machinery
in order for it to happen are what
amazed me most about the race.
We were all having an adventure,”
he adds. Although he’s still
recognised as the presenter for
TV shows The Mole and Border
Security, Bowler has also been
busy acting in Hollywood lately.
“I did an enormous amount
of acting last year: the fi nale of
Ugly Betty, season three of True
Blood, and four fi lms within
four months. Before the race,
I was burnt out. I’d worked on
fi ve continents, and played a
New York chief fi nancial offi cer,
werewolf, Jesus, an SAS soldier
and an American steel magnate.
The Race seemed like the perfect
do something completely diff erent
for a while. It’s the crème de la
crème of reality shows, and also
the most exciting. How do you
knock it back?”
The 11 teams of two, who begin
their adventure in episode one by
fl ying Jetstar from Melbourne to
Indonesia, kept the crew on their
toes. Getting around by ferry,
cidomo, funicular, taxi, bus, long
boat, 4WD, car, plane, parachute,
quad bike, train, tyrolean
traverse, abseil, helicopter, truck,
rickshaw and even an ex-Vietnam
50,000km, four continents, 23
cities and 12 countries, including
Singapore, Vietnam, Hong
Kong and Indonesia over four
continuous weeks.
“We would have to wait for
the last team to get in, and then
get ahead of the fi rst team to the
next stop. Once, we were standing
around in the desert for six hours
after being told they were 15
minutes away. But one time, we
were only seven minutes ahead
of the fi rst team arriving. Picture
every member of the crew running
through the streets, carrying 200
pounds of gear,” he chuckles.
“We raced for 28 days, and I
ALSO THE MOST EXCITING”
only slept in hotels
on 19 occasions. The
rest was on airplanes
or airport lounges.
Our longest leg of
transport was 40
hours of fl ights and
airport lounges. I’d
bathe in the plane’s
bathroom. When
things got really tight,
they were on the same plane and
you still have to be at the fi nish
line before them. You really have
to move your butt!”
Bowler says he found the
contestants “fantastic... ironically
Australian who made very clever
choices.” Not surprisingly, he has

“I HAD NO IDEA WHAT ACTING
become close to the crew he was
working with 24/7. “You can’t help
but become incredibly close, while
criss-crossing the world together.
We’re all Facebook buddies and
chat every day.”
Today, Bowler lives in Venice
Beach, California, so the most
important people he stays in touch
with are his son, Zeke, six, and
daughter Edie, eight, who live
in Sydney with his wife, actress
Roxane Wilson, from whom he is
now separated. “Whenever I can,
I spend time with the kids — they
are my whole purpose,” says this
dedicated dad. “It was Zeke’s sixth
birthday yesterday, and we had
a boy’s afternoon with meat pies
and tomato sauce.”
Bowler fell into acting in
Brisbane, after doing some
copywriting for a TV commercial
of a small, local clothing chain.
“We went along to shoot, and
the bloke didn’t show up, so I did
it. I had to lip-sync something.
They said that was acting, and I
had no idea what that was, but
it seemed to be pretty easy, so I
thought I’d have a crack at it. In
those days, my dad was a tiler
and mum was a secretary. Dad
worked six- and-a-half days a
week with his hands. He’d
come home looking grey with
total exhaustion.
“I turned up to do this
beginner’s acting course in
Brisbane, and on the fi rst day
they made us be trees and crawl
He went on to graduate from
NIDA in 1991, and landed roles
on Blue Heelers, Stingers (where
he met Wilson) and All Saints,
among others. But a move to LA to
crack the big time proved tough.
Three weeks after they arrived in
2002, Wilson became pregnant.
“After everyone had gone to
bed, I cried for hours. I thought
I’d ruined my family’s fi nancial
future. I’d budgeted for 15 months
but the plan didn’t work out,” he
says. Grimacing, he then adds,
“At all. Lost everything. Lost a
home. Went broke three times.”
032
For four-and-a-half
years he did odd
jobs. “I was cleaning
elevators in Los
Angeles at one point
for US$12 an hour.
You do what you
have to do to feed
your family.”
His fi rst big
Hollywood break was
playing villainous Wilhelmina
Slater’s dastardly love interest
Connor Owens on Ugly Betty. “I
loved that cast. They were like a
family.” He became particularly
close to Michael Urie and his
on-screen love interest, Vanessa
Williams, and says both actors
were “extremely down to earth”.
This year, we’ll also see Bowler
on the big screen as Jesus Christ
in The City of Gardens; an SAS
offi cer and war hero in The Killer
Elite starring Robert de Niro, Clive
Owen and Jason Statham; and in
the lead as the shipping magnate
in Atlas Shrugged, based on Ayn
Rand’s novel.
When Bowler’s not working,
he’ll “probably be in a coff ee shop
The fl oods have receded
and the doors are open
— it’s time to rediscover
Brisbane’s excellent
riverside dining scene
WORDS TIANA TEMPLEMAN
SONO RESTAURANT PORTSIDE
The elegant dining room at this
traditional Japanese restaurant is
fi lled with tranquil water features
and well-informed staff , who
delight in explaining the cuisine’s
intricacies. Novice diners can take
a journey through Japan with a
six-course tasting menu, or enjoy
the chef’s showmanship at the
teppanyaki grill.
Remember to book — Sono is
packed every night of the week —
or come for lunch, when there are
some great specials to be had.
Chef’s recommendation: Sashimi. It’s
fl own in daily and chauffeured to the
restaurant in a purpose-built truck.
BAVARIAN BIER CAFE
The ornate beer stein chandelier
suspended over the main bar
sums this place up perfectly — a
classy watering hole that doesn’t
take itself too seriously. Except
when it comes to bier — each one
is brewed in accordance with strict
purity laws dating back to the
early 1500s. Schnitzel is the star of
A Taste
for the
River
the show on the Bavarian-inspired
menu, but the fl ammenbrot, a
crisp pastry base with soft cheese,
caramelised onions and a choice
of fi llings, is equally impressive.
You’ll need to get here early on
Friday afternoon to score a table —
it’s standing room only after 4pm.
Chef’s recommendation: Tuesday’s
Schnitzel Challenge — fi nish it and
the schnapps is on the house.
MOO MOO
With an impressive menu that
runs to more than fi ve pages,
plus a wine list with more than
50 off erings by the glass, there
are loads of reasons for diners to
corral themselves at this dedicated
steak restaurant. Owner Steven
Adams is looking ahead post-fl ood
after losing — among other things
— a white-wine collection valued
at more than AU$150,000.
“We’re so glad to have our
doors back open and to put this
experience behind us.”
Chef’s recommendation: Something
beefy from the dry-ageing cabinet.
SAKÉ RESTAURANT & BAR
Shaun Presland’s fabulous Saké
(of Sydney fame) has arrived in
Brisbane, and its modern Japanese
off erings make it ideal for diners
after something diff erent. Cute
miniature tacos fi lled with
sashimi arrive with a Kozaemon
Junmai “sake shot”; bite-sized
prawn tempura pieces are listed as
“popcorn shrimp” on the menu.
Each dish is fun but far from
frivolous, thanks to the deft touch
of head chef Shinichi Maeda. Solo
diners will appreciate the single
seats overlooking a bustling
kitchen fi lled with smiling chefs.
Chef’s recommendation: Seared
medium-rare yellow fi n tuna belly
served with fi g tempura and roasted
pickled peach.
you’ll just pay a gate entry fee of
LAKE MOUNTAIN
Located 22km from Marysville,
Lake Mountain is Melbourne’s
closest and most aff ordable alpine
experience. There’s no downhill
skiing, but it’s Australia’s premier
cross-country skiing resort with
over 30km of groomed crosscountry
trails. It won’t cost you
an arm and a leg either. Rather,
you’ll just pay a gate entry fee of
AU$40 (on weekends) or AU$30
(mid-week), which covers access
to all facilities and services. Crosscountry
skiing is also inexpensive.
It costs adults just AU$12 and kids
AU$5.90 for an entire day of skiing.
But there’s more to do. Try
tobogganing at four diverse
locations, snow shoe, compete in
snow sculpture competitions or
take a snow-mobile ride around
Snowy Hill (20 minutes, AU$50).
There’s also family restaurants
and cafés, plus a new three-level
complex (with a 1,000-seat family
eatery, wood-fi re pizza ovens and
retail shops) opening this season.
WORDS KELLY IRVING
A FASHIONABLE CHANGE
In 2011, design teacher and
photographer Raphael Kilpatrick
was one of several people to get an
email from artist Grace McQuilton.
It proposed a “completely mad
idea” that was impossible to refuse.
“We were frustrated by the
negative attention that refugees
were getting,” Kilpatrick says.
“We wanted to change the public’s
perception by providing training
and employment to prove they’re
extremely talented, highly capable
members of our community.”
A board was formed and
AU$50,000 from an anonymous
donation helped with start-up
costs. A shop in Collingwood,
Melbourne, was bought and
renovated, and The Social Studio
was born.
The not-for-profi t fashion space
provides certifi ed training in
clothing production and design
to young refugees. Students
create products — from dresses
and shirts to bags and jewellery
— from donated reclaimed and
recycled materials. All items are
sold at the store, online and from
moveable pop-up stores (in central
Melbourne until September 2011).
“A lot of our refugees come
from tailoring nations, so we
enhance the skills they already
have,” he says. The studio (and
café) has helped students secure
jobs at Nobody jeans and Mariana
Hardwick bridal label. “It’s terrifi c
to see people moving on. It shows
that design is a common language
that breaks down ethnicity, religion
and personal ideology.”

SHARE THE LOVE
Marcus Godinho was eating
lunch when he fi rst heard about
FareShare — a not-for-profi t
rescuing food from landfi ll and
turning it into nutritious meals for
the homeless and hungry.
“Someone told me that they
volunteered in their kitchen,” he
says. “As a keen cook, I thought it
would be a great way of spending a
Saturday morning.”
Three years later, Godinho
became CEO of the Melbournebased
organisation. To achieve its
aim of giving away one million
meals in Victoria every year,
FareShare enlists more than 3,000
volunteers, from delivery drivers to
kitchen hands. It also runs regular
singles’ events with founder
and m.a.d.woman CEO Melina
Schamroth, who met her boyfriend
“cracking eggs and cracking jokes”
during a FareShare singles’ night.
Every June, the two turn up
the heat with a Feed Melbourne
Singles’ Night at Etihad Stadium to
raise funds to support FareShare’s
work. Last year, the event was
a resounding success with
AU$18,000 raised and 152 singles
from 250 fi nding a match.
“It takes the pressure off being
single and opens it up to people
with big hearts, who care about
052
our community,” says Godinho.
“They’ll learn a few tricks in the
kitchen, maybe meet somebody
special, and leave feeling they’ve
made a big diff erence to people
who can’t aff ord three meals a day.”
THE NEW BREW
Six years living in Germany gave
Dean O’Callaghan a taste for
the good life. “I love society, the
environment… and great beer,”
he says. So when his dad bought
a microbrewery in Melbourne,
O’Callaghan returned home to help
— in more ways than one.
“The environmental cost of
it was stupid, so I wrote dad
a sustainability plan. Then I
started doing the same for
other breweries.”
O’Callaghan concocted The
Good Brew Company in 2007. He
helps microbreweries save money
and reduces their carbon emissions
through better brew techniques
and technologies, then sells their
products via a catering sideline
dubbed “the bike bar”. “I peddle
to your event on a trike loaded
up with a reusable keg of locally
produced beer, wine or cider. You
get your own bar without months
of recycling to clear up.”
He also develops new recipes
with his clients, such as Arctic
Fox’s choc-chilli stout, and
Buckley’s lemongrass pale ale.
“A microbrewed beer has an
amazing diversity of fl avour and
nutrition. There are no chemicals
or preservatives, it’s vegan-friendly
and it has lots of vitamin B so
there’s no hangover the next
day — so I know I’m making
people happy!”

PEDDLE POWER
It was only a matter of time
before Melburnians Sam Salter
and Jason Wyatt combined their
lifelong friendship and love of
bikes. “Sam came to me and said
‘let’s do a bike magazine’, but I said
‘let’s do a website’,” Wyatt recalls.
BikeExchange — “a one-stop shop
for all your biking needs” — kicked
off in 2007. Initially, a classifi ed
website for private vendors to buy
and sell new and used bikes and
accessories, today, thousands of
retailers and bike tour operators
also back the site, enabling people
to buy direct from any bike store
LOCAL HEROES //
“A microbrewed beer...
has lots of vitamin B so there’s
no hangover the next day”
throughout Australia.
“When we fi rst launched the
site we got a hundred people
on there per month; now we get
about 425,000,” says Wyatt. “It’s
a unique concept for the bike
world, and we’ve also helped out
struggling Australian retailers
that are competing against
international websites.”
For this two-man team
(now a team of 15), there are no
reservations about starting a
business with a friend. “And
the fact that we help people
buy and sell bikes is the
most rewarding thing of all,”
adds Salter.
KEEPING IT REAL
Virginia Bruce realised
the power that global
brands have on people
while working overseas
as a business developer. It
prompted her to close the
door on what she was doing,
and open up The r.e.a.l Store in
Sydney’s Woolloomooloo.
“I wanted to do something with
a social conscience,” she says. The
store sells “ordinary products with
an extraordinary message behind
them”. This includes bestsellers
such as homewares made from
100% sustainable materials. The
money from some products goes
back into the community, with
10% of all sales going to charities
and humanitarian initiatives.
“Everything must have a ‘payit-forward’
concept — a positive
impact on the next person who
comes into contact with it.”
successful treatment of
over 400,000 patients
– Ashley & Martin
is Australia’s most
all you need to know about hair loss
here
are the
There are many contradictory claims regarding hair loss. The fact is, our
RealGROWTH TM
about hair loss
program is the most comprehensive hair loss treatment
available. No other program is more effective in arresting baldness and
regrowing your hair naturally. Independent University trials have proven we
can double your hair density. With this proven solution in mind, let’s now
expose some enduring myths regarding hair loss and its treatment.
Myth #1. Non-pharmaceutical treatments
will work for your hair loss.
Hair loss is a medical condition and must be
treated as such. Unless your treatment is
based on FDA or TGA approved medications
that are prescribed by a Doctor (like the
Ashley & Martin program), you are not
treating your medical condition correctly.
Myth #2. Genetic factors can’t be treated.
Ashley & Martin has proven that genetic hair
loss can be successfully treated if arrested
early. There’s a 50% chance that every man
will suffer from the genetic factors causing
hair loss. This is called Male Pattern Baldness.
The RealGROWTH TM program, exclusive to
Ashley & Martin, utilises pharmaceutical
compounds that specifi cally target the
hormones affected by the MPB gene.
Myth #3. Cutting your hair regularly helps.
Cutting your hair will not cause your hair to
grow thicker or faster. It only appears thicker
because the base of the hair shaft is thicker
than at the tip. Therefore shorter hair appears
to be thicker. Cutting your hair only provides
short-term visual relief: it does nothing to treat
the real cause of hair loss.
Myth #4. Hair loss does not require a Doctor.
This is the greatest myth of all. The fact is,
hair loss is a medical condition and therefore
requires specialised medical treatment.
Whilst some non-medical companies are
claiming the same success rate as Ashley
& Martin, it is blatantly untrue. They do not
have the ability to obtain what our Doctors
prescribe. Nor do they have independent
evidence to prove their claims.
FACT: Every Ashley & Martin medical centre employs a
quali ed Doctor who specialises in the medical principles
behind hair loss. We also employ specialist Pharmacists to
create unique pharmaceutical compounds.
Are You Always Paying Money Out?
Getting Tired Of It? Who Hasn’t Thought About a Different Life Style?
We Can Show You How You Can Stop Working Earlier If You Want To!
Buy an Investment Property
Today and Pay for it later!!!
• Don’t know how to do it.
We will do it for you!
• Don’t know what to buy.
We will source it for you!
• Don’t know how to fi nance it.
We will arrange the right
fi nance package for you!
• Don’t know how it all works.
We will work it all out for you!
If you are not doing anything
different financially, you will
never grow financially. Don’t let
routine ruin your life. You have
heard the saying a million times.
Work smarter rather than harder,
but you continue to work harder.
And harder and longer hours.
The thing is you have to ACT on
it, not just think it.
We have a lot of Police Officers,
Detectives and Correctional Officers
that are clients and have been for a
long time. No matter which way you
look at your finances, unless you do
something different, you will not get
ahead.
We specialise in helping people buy
the right property with the right
finance package and then we help
you with all the relevant paperwork
on a month by month basis. We
advise you when to lock in interest
rates, when to leave them at the
variable rate. We also advise when
to buy and when to sell. We make
our money by making your money
work for you….
We are Financial Planners. Real Estate
Agents. Finance Brokers. Insurance
Brokers. 26 years in the industry has
given us the ability to give YOU the
tools for YOUR fi nancial freedom.
We can show you how to buy
investment property without putting
up any cash by using the equity in
your home and fi nance it in such a
way that you effectively don’t have to
pay for it until your own home loan
is paid off.
• Land is running out –
Increases Real Estate Prices.
• Banks reluctant to lend to developers
– Increases Real Estate Prices.
• Investors coming back into the market
– Increases Real Estate Prices.
• Interest rates on their way up –
Increases Real Estate Prices.
• People are not investing in the Stock
Market – Increases Real Estate Prices.
The above example is a based
on a purchasing an investment
property and borrowing all the
funds providing you are qualified
by using equity in your own home.
You will take all the rent, Negative
Gearing and your wages and pay it
all toward your home loan whilst
putting all your bills on your credit
card. There is a special bank funding
bank account set up to pay all the
costs on the investment property
until your own home loan is paid off.
At that point in time, you will start
paying for the investment property
plus the bank funding account
which in the majority of cases is less
than you are paying on your current
home loan before you even buy the
investment property.
Before our one-hour jet-ski tour
with Jetski Tours, our coxswain
Simon leads a safety briefi ng.
“Sustain around 40km/hour
to remain stable on the ski,” he
warns. “They can reach 100km/h,
but speed out there and you will
become airborne!” Enough said.
Gliding away from Hamilton’s
millionaire yacht-dotted marina,
Simon yells back to me, “Increase
to a height of 40m and fl oat on
air. Silence envelops our world,
touched only by distant birdcalls
as the almost-visible curvature of
the earth comes into view.
Our deep relaxation fi nally stirs
when, unexpectedly, our feet brave
a thrilling dip into the Coral Sea.
Then the boat speeds off again,
launching us back up our outdoor
elevator, higher than an airborne
The peak’s jaw-dropping panorama spans
Whitsunday Island and Dent Island
your speed!” I laugh nervously,
but pull on the throttle and
bravely ride in his white-water
wake. Gust-catching sailboats and
windsurfers bob across our swell.
“Keep your eye out for sea
turtles, guys!” shouts Simon, as
we zip around rocky headlands.
This truly is tropical Queensland.
Later, I board a speedboat,
adrenaline pumping in
anticipation of our Parasailing
Adventure stint. Couples step into
tandem harnesses, the parachute
infl ates and clips release. We soar
seaplane, before winching us back
down to deck.
Back on terra fi rma, I lace up my
mountain boots for the 90-minute
hike to Passage Peak, Hamilton’s
highest point. On the steep and
fragrant ascent, a kookaburra
cackles to my footsteps. The peak’s
jaw-dropping panorama spans
Whitsunday Island, Dent Island
and across to the mainland.
RETAIL THERAPY
Put the word wedding in
front of anything, and
you can add a zero to
the end of the price tag.
Here’s the irony: for the
couple who can aff ord
a honeymoon after planning their
dream day, things they’ve actually
paid through the nose for (a dress,
suit, decorations) will be much
cheaper in their chosen destination.
So why not have the honeymoon
fi rst? That’s what my fi ancée Marisa
and I did.
The plan was that for the price
of an off -the-rack wedding dress
in our hometown, we could get a
two-week holiday to Vietnam, a
wedding dress for her, a suit for me,
other wedding-related items, with
all fl ights, accommodation, meals
and sightseeing activities covered.
Sounds too good to be true, right?
We started in Ho Chi Minh
City, Vietnam’s bustling capital.
There are a few tailors in District
1, in addition to many specialised
wedding outfi tters. The prices
were a third to a half of what you
could expect in Australasia, though
066
Shopping for
Wedded Bliss
If you’re planning a wedding, a trip to Vietnam
yields much more than just a holiday
LEFT/RIGHT: Marisa tries on her wedding
dress; choose from a multitude of dress styles
OPPOSITE: Get a beautiful, well-made wedding
dress for a fraction of the price in Vietnam
the off -the-rack sizing caters for
slim local brides, and styles veer
towards bling (think sequins and
diamantes). But really, who goes
to Vietnam to buy something
off -the-rack anyway?
Your best bet for tailoring in
Vietnam is Hoi An. We fl ew to Da
Nang on Jetstar, and from there it
was only a 30-minute, AU$15 taxi
ride to Hoi An.
There are over 400 tailor shops
in the old town, which can be
intimidating. Your fi rst stop should
be Hoi An Cloth Market. You’ll fi nd
the same materials as in the fl ashier
WORDS AND PHOTOGRAPHY CRAIG CLIFF
tailor shops, but at the lowest prices.
We found a beautiful patterned silk,
and had them whip up 10 tablerunners
for our wedding reception
— for just AU$40. We also bought
material for our bridesmaids’
dresses for about a third of what it
would have cost us back home.
Armed with knowledge about
local fabrics and prices, it’s then
time to fi nd your dressmaker.
Some pre-planning goes a long
way. Marisa had sketches of what
she wanted her dress to look like.
Everyone we dealt with spoke
decent English and knew their

stuff , but it would have been time
consuming without any ideas.
A quick internet search will
yield plenty of fi rst-hand accounts
from Western brides who’ve had
dresses made in Hoi An. The bigger
names, such as A Dong Silk and
Yaly Couture, come with the highest
prices, but also the best guarantee
of success.
Marisa went with Yaly, who
promised to make her dress for
AU$340 (read: less than a quarter
of the price of the cheapest dress
back home). So how do you fi ll a
week in Hoi An while waiting for
your dress to be made?
I got a suit for the wedding made
at Mr Xe for AU$110. After choosing
the material, I was taken by scooter
across town to be measured up by
Mr Xe himself. My suit was ready
for a fi tting the next afternoon. The
suit was perfect after raising the
pant legs slightly.
With fi ve days to fi ll, I had a suit
made for work, at Thu Van Tailors.
Again, a pleasing end result. More
things to do: lazing at the beach, the
old town market, eating (must-try
dish: cao lao — thick rice noodles
with roast pork, crackling and
herbs) and giftware shops. The
lacquered vases and platters make
great table decorations, souvenirs or
presents for guests.
Most restaurants off er cooking
classes, so check the back of your
menu. We went for the deluxe class
with Red Bridge Cooking School
(AU$40 each), which included a
trip to an organic herb farm, buying
market produce, and making our
own rice noodles and local dishes,
such as a delicious paw paw and
banana fl ower salad.
We also spent a night in Hue, a
scenic four-hour bus ride away.
A must-see is the citadel from the
Nguyen Dynasty: an intriguing mix
of impeccably restored grandeur
and unkempt ruins.
And there’s also tap beer for
AU$0.13 a glass, and white rum and
banana smoothies for less than a
dollar along the riverfront.
On the sixth day, Marisa collected
her wedding dress. She says it’s
closer to her dream dress than
anything else. After fi lling up our
seven days easily, we set off for four
days up north in Hanoi and
Ha Long Bay — to relax and enjoy
the rest of our wonderful
pre-wedding honeymoon.
SUDOKU
Grab a pencil, put on your thinking cap and join the craze!
INSTRUCTIONS
The objective of Sudoku is to fi ll in the
missing squares so that each row, column and
3x3 box contains the numbers 1 through to 9.
To get you started, here are a few tactics...
Scan each horizontal and vertical band
consisting of three 3x3 boxes. It’s often
easiest to start in a spot with the most
numbers already given. If you can fi nd the
same number in two rows, you know that
1EASY
number must be in the third (the same goes
for columns). Now see which intersecting
rows and columns can be eliminated because
they also contain that number. (This method
is called slicing and dicing.)
Some Sudoku fans like to pencil in
possible answers in the corners of individual
squares. Once you have a few numbers fi lled
in, you may also fi nd it handy to jot down a
list of missing numbers for each row, column
and box.
CHEEKY CHEETAH
Australia Zoo goes dotty
for its cheetah!
Did you know...
Cheetah are the
fastest land animals, with
a maximum recorded
speed of 127km/hr!
Just like our fingerprints,
no two cheetah sport the
Cheetah don’t roar like a
lion, they purr like a cat
Get to know Echo
Echo is the big man on campus —
he’s the biggest of our cheetah, and
takes on the role of protector and big
brother. He has a serious demeanor,
but also has a soft and playful side.
Beneath Echo’s tough exterior, he has
a beautiful nature. He loves getting
scratched behind the ears.
From koalas to green sea turtles, the Australia
Zoo Rescue Unit is dedicated to rescuing wildlife
in need. From Brisbane to Kilcoy in Queensland,
and beyond, the team travels far and wide with
a proven catch-and-release program in place —
their aim is to successfully rescue, rehabilitate and
release as many animals as possible.
The Australia Zoo Rescue Unit provides a free
service to the community to rescue sick and
injured wildlife, and get them to the best possible
veterinary treatment, the Australia Zoo Wildlife
Hospital. The team are highly skilled and trained
to rescue everything from road accident victims to
marine animal strandings (including everything in
between), and they do it seven days a week!
WILLIAM
Hi, my name is William and I live
in Sydney. I went on an awesome
holiday to the Gold Coast, Queensland
recently. I stayed at the Holiday
Inn. I went to Sea World and it was
awesome! I saw real gentoo and king
penguins — they were really cute. I
caught live shows with dolphins and
seals, and went on some cool rides
too. I went on two rollercoasters, and
also saw a kids’ playground that was
really big — although they haven’t
even fi nished building it yet!
Sydney, New South Wales
CADEN
When I was born, my mummy promised
me we’d travel the world together
one day. So last November, we
jetted off to Bali together for our fi rst
overseas adventure! We had three
wonderful weeks of sun, relaxing,
seeing volcanoes, tigers, pony rides,
shopping, elephants and yummy buffet
breakfasts! It was so cool. We want to
go on another trip soon. I love mummy
and I love Jetstar too!
MATTHEW
My passion is airplanes! I love
collecting (I have over 150 models,
including four Jetstar planes) and
fl ying on them! We went from Adelaide
to Sydney on Jetstar. We arrived at
Sydney Airport and watched the
planes for several hours. We did a lot
of sightseeing, enjoyed spectacular
fi reworks and took ferry trips to Manly.
The highlight was when I discovered a
model shop in the QVB and bought 11
planes! On the last day, I was ecstatic
to discover we would be travelling
home on the Jetstar Next-G plane.
Every day, in
the remote
mountains
of northern
Vietnam,
kindergarten teacher Miss Ha
gathers her young pupils together,
and walks them from their
classroom along a rocky track to a
well in the village nearby, so they
can wash their hands and faces.
Miss Ha says that the children
usually arrive at school covered in
dust and grime. Many come from
homes that have no reliable access
to clean water or basic sanitation.
Yet, life for Miss Ha and her
pupils is set to improve as a result
of a StarKids-supported water and
sanitation project, which aims to
increase access to clean water,
basic sanitation and hygiene
education for 5,000 people living
in the mountainous Vietnamese
district of Huong Hoa by September.
The project has commenced
upgrading and constructing water
wells and toilet facilities in local
schools and homes. It has also
trained 20 local teachers and health
workers on how to educate locals
on the disposal of household waste
and good hygiene practices, such
as hand-washing before and after
meals, and after using the toilet.
A survey conducted at the
project’s start found that only 5%
of local families had access to clean
water and a basic toilet. It also
found that less than 20% of people
knew about good hygiene practices.
Local village leader Pa Muoi
explained that of the 84 families in
090
A Clear
Future
Bringing clean
water to Miss Ha
and her pupils
his community, only
10 currently had
access to a well. But
he added that the
few existing wells
in the village run dry for up to three
months of the year, with families
relying on a local stream for water.
Because they lack access to
knowledge and facilities, children
and families in this and nearby
villages are vulnerable to diarrhoea
and skin infections spread by water.
The United Nations estimates
that every day, 4,000 children die
from diarrhoea caused by dirty
water and poor sanitation. It also
estimates that 443 million school
days are lost each year, because
children are too sick for class.
Miss Ha and teachers in
neighbouring schools try to ensure
their pupils have clean water to drink
and wash with during class, but it’s
tough. “Every month, I buy a 15-litre
water bottle for the children. There
was no drinking water at all in class.
I felt very sorry for them,” Miss Ha
explains. She also worries about the
children drinking from the stream.
“The children also bathe at the
stream, and buffaloes may be lying
next to them [in the same water].”
To ensure that the children
have a private, hygienic place to
use the toilet, Miss Ha rigged up a
makeshift shelter, but the “canvas
gets tattered within a week”.
Miss Ha hopes her pupils will
have better access to clean drinking
water and a hygienic toilet, and
because of this StarKids-supported
project, that day is getting closer.
sundown, and enjoy contemporary
Japanese music live in Club 333 to
the backdrop of a lit-up Tokyo.
Then enjoy a romantic Japanese
dinner in your own private room in
the very luxurious Tokyo Shiba
Edo-style garden. The whole night
will cost you about 15,000 yen
(AU$168.18) per person, depending
on how much you drink.
FOR HISTORY: No Buddhist
temple compares in
grandeur or historic signifi cance to
the Zenko-ji temple in Nagano city.
I LOVE TOKYO BECAUSE:
There are just so many
things to do and see — concerts,
sports, restaurants, shops, crazy
fashion, nightlife, culture and even
parks. It’s also one of the safest
places I’ve ever been to. All in all, it
is one of those places that keeps
you going back for more.
MOST ROMANTIC SPOT:
Dinner on a large sailboat is
a great way to see life on the
harbour in a relaxed atmosphere of
a comfortable yacht, where you can
enjoy dinner at the same time.
FOR HISTORY: The historic
village at Howick in the
eastern suburbs has some early
colonial buildings, including a
school, store and a cottage spread
over seven acres. It’s fascinating to
see how the early Europeans lived.
BEST PLACE TO PARTY
WITH THE GANG: Viaduct
Harbour is in the CBD, and has top
bars and restaurants facing the
water. It’s got a vibrant vibe, and is
walkable from all the central hotels.
FAVOURITE SIDE TRIP
