TO RIDE
Jockey-turned-actor Otto Thorwarth took a chance on a major role—
and took a ribbon right out of the gate. // BY MICHAEL KAPLAN

06
THE WORD SPREAD THROUGH FLIERS
TACKED TO THE WALLS OF RACETRACK
LOCKER ROOMS:
The producers of a Hollywood
movie were looking to cast jockeys
in an upcoming production about
Secretariat, the world’s most famous
racehorse. It was a jockey’s dream,
a chance to turn the half-light of
horse racing into the fl oodlights of
Hollywood stardom. Meanwhile, Otto
Thorwarth—who’d already been a
jockey for nearly two decades—was
wondering if he should retire from
horse racing altogether.
Like any good Southern man,
Thorwarth went to his pastor for
career advice. “Otto,” said the pastor,
“Some day you are going to ride a
champion.” Not only did Thorwarth
get back in the saddle, he saw the
Secretariat posting and, on a whim,
decided to audition for the fi lm. He
got the role, and in the end he did
wind up riding a champion—of sorts.
“The pastor was right, but not how I
thought,” he says.
In all, about 30 riders made their
way to the audition in Lexington,
Kentucky, to compete for roles in the
Disney fi lm that would be Secretariat,
the story of the 1973 Triple Crownwinning
thoroughbred. The jocks read
lines and did their best to seem silver
screen–worthy. Several of them won
roles, but in the end, the one who stood
out from the others was Thorwarth,
a man who just happens to be a dead
ringer for Ron Turcotte, the tough
jockey who rode Secretariat to all 14 of
his major victories.
ON THE SURFACE, Secretariat is a
fi lm about one of the world’s most
exceptional racehorses. But it’s also
the story of a woman fi ghting for
what she believes in—and winning.
Secretariat’s owner, Penny Chennery
Tweety (Diane Lane), is stubbornly
convinced that her horse can do
what horse racing’s old guard has
deemed impossible. It doesn’t sound
like the most original screenplay, but
the racing segments keep the movie
edge-of-your-seat exciting, bringing
the same gripping energy that makes
the Kentucky Derby the most exciting
two minutes on TV. Even though
everybody knows how the movie will
end (spoiler alert: Secretariat wins),
there’s enough tension that you fi nd
yourself rooting for the horse anyway.
One of the keys to the fi lm’s success
IN THE FIRST PLACE Otto Thorwarth celebrates a victory on celebrated racehorse Secretariat.
is Thorwarth, who managed to
hold his own with such Hollywood
heavyweights as John Malkovich
(prickly trainer Lucien Laurin) and
Lane despite it being his fi rst time on
camera. Understandably intimidated,
Thorwarth asked Malkovich and
director Randall Wallace whether
he should have gotten an acting
coach. Wallace pooh-poohed the idea,
advising Thorwarth to be himself—a
jockey. Malkovich said, “Look at it
this way: In your business, you mess
up, you fall off a horse, and you’re
screwed. In this business, if we mess
up, we just do it again. So don’t worry.”
Once he got over his initial
trepidation, Thorwarth managed
to seem completely in the moment
onscreen. “I’ve been around enough
celebrity horse-owners that I am not
overwhelmed by celebrity,” he says. “I
felt honored to be with John and Diane,
and to be able to act alongside them.
But they’re just regular people, and,
honestly, I was pleasantly surprised
by how down-to-earth everyone was.
I found myself a little overwhelmed
by how many people are involved in
the making of a movie, but it was a
pleasure to work with all of them.”
Thorwarth also credits his ease
onscreen with having little time to
prepare for the movie—or to freak
out. He arrived on set with just fi ve

BIT PARTS Diane Lane checks out her horse (left); Thorwarth, Lane, Malkovich and Secretariat in the winner’s circle.
days notice, far too little time to get
nervous about meeting stars like Lane
and Malkovich. But even when they
started fi lming Thorwarth’s fi rst take,
he showed some serious courage.
In that scene, Turcotte is being
roughly questioned by Tweety. She’s
considering hiring him to ride her
horse and asks the kinds of questions
that most jockeys would fi nd insulting.
“Randall told me to not hold
back, to respond to her in the way
to act exactly as the real jockeys
and horses did in 1973. Wallace had
blocked out the races to the 16th of a
mile, and the whole crew worked from
charts with diff erent colored tacks
representing each horse’s position in
particular shots.
Considering that even the most
well-trained horses sometimes do
precisely as they please, it made for
some perilous takes. “The horse I
was riding for one scene—there were
“I HAD TO HIT A GOLF BALL IN A SINGLE TAKE
WITH A WEDGE FROM 1970. I WAS AFRAID
THAT IF I SHANKED IT I WOULD BREAK A
$500,000 CAMERA OR KILL SOMEBODY.”
I would to a real-life horse owner,”
says Thorwarth. “But there’s just one
problem with that. As I told Randall,
we never really get to speak our mind
to the owners. If we did, we’d lose
our rides. He told me that this would
be my chance to talk to an owner the
way I always wanted to. So I did, and
the very fi rst take is the one that you
see in the movie. After we shot it, I
got a standing ovation from the cast
and crew. Diane was just shaking her
head. She said, ‘I’ve been in a lot of
movies, and I never saw somebody get
a standing ovation like that before.’”
Of course, Thorwarth didn’t lend
the fi lm its horse racing street cred
all on his own. In order to make the
race scenes as realistic as possible,
Wallace enlisted an entire legion of
riders to man the horses. To ensure
that everything stayed true-to-life, the
acting jockeys and their horses needed
several diff erent ‘Secretariats’ in the
movie—was not the fastest or bravest
horse in the world,” says Thorwarth.
“In that scene, the horse and I came
up from behind in a race and slipped
through a hole to take the lead. We
shot it, and I thought it looked great.
But they wanted me to do it again and
for the hole to be a little tighter. So we
tried it again. But this time the horse
didn’t want to go through the hole.
Instead of going left, he veered to the
right. It could have tripped us up and
somebody could have gotten hurt.
That didn’t happen, but it was close.
I told Randall and the others that the
fi rst take would have to do.”
Believe it or not, the scariest scene
for Thorwarth wasn’t even on a horse,
but when he had to hit a golf ball.
It should have been second nature
for the jockey, a skilled golfer who
impressed the fi lm’s producers when
he shot a 76 on one of their days off .
But when he had to fi lm a scene in
which Turcotte crushes a shot after
Laurin badly muff s one, he was afraid
something would go horribly wrong.
“I had to hit a 110-foot shot with a
wedge that must have actually been
from 1970,” he says. “The camera was
directly in front of me and this had to
be done in a single take. There were 80
cast and crew down the fairway, and
several cameras were set up to capture
the ball going toward the green. I
was afraid that if I shanked it I would
break a $500,000 camera or kill
somebody. Luckily, I just nailed it.”
It seems there may not actually
be anything, sporting or otherwise,
that Thorwarth isn’t good at. Since the
movie wrapped, he’s given up racing
to pursue acting—and attracted a few
nibbles from Hollywood. “One night
Randall had dinner with me and asked
if I enjoyed being in the movie,” says
Thorwarth. “I told him that I did. Then
he asked if I would be interested in
doing more. I said, ‘Absolutely!’”
It’s probably a good sign that he’s
already chumming around with guys
like Malkovich. “I was tossing a football
around with a crew member and John
signaled that I should pass it to him,”
says Thorwarth. “He was a little far
away, so I knew I’d have to put a some
zip on the ball. But I was afraid I’d
break his nose or something, so I threw
it over his head. Well, he jumped up
and just grabbed the ball out of the air.
Then he threw back a perfect spiral.”
Thorwarth laughs at the memory
before adding, “John Malkovich may
not know much about golf, but he sure
knows how to throw a football.”
