Desperate
Measures
To master King George VI’s stutter in The King’s Speech,
Colin Firth went way beyond the call of duty. Will the
Golden Globe–winning actor be stuck with a stammer?
“In this grave hour, and perhaps the most
fateful in our history...”
SO BEGINS King George VI’s legendary
speech to the people of Great Britain—
the one that led the beleaguered
country into World War II against
Adolf Hitler, one of the most effective
(albeit insane) public speakers
of all time. Those who heard the
King’s speech in 1939 were inspired,
emboldened and given new faith
in their leader. Likely, many in the
kingdom never knew the lengths to
which the king went to deliver it.
This is the story that actor Colin
Firth was called upon to replicate in
The King’s Speech, in which English
royal George VI struggles to give
a voice to his nation in spite of a
debilitating speech impediment.
Firth manages the task so well that
it’s easy to imagine the actor has
been dealing with a lifelong stutter
himself. That isn’t the case, of course,
and Firth’s performance is another
reminder of the handsome 50-yearold’s
immense talent—the sort that
rightly earned the man a Golden
Globe for the performance. But Firth’s
dead-on portrayal of the man who
reigned over the British empire from
1936 to 1952 goes far beyond mere
craft. It owes much to the intensive
preparation he put in for the role,
which bordered on obsession.
Firth’s quest to perfect the then-
06
prince’s stammer began with a close
examination of old radio speeches and
newsreel footage. But as he delved
into the archives, Firth discovered
that there was more to master than
George’s signature stammer. He had
to learn the prince’s antiquated style
of diction. “It was more clipped,” Firth
told NPR. “No one really talks that
way anymore.”
The production team hired a dialect
coach to solve that issue, but the script
also called for Prince George to become
progressively more confi dent as he
engages in sessions with quirky speech
therapist Lionel Logue (Geoff rey Rush).
In order to eff ectively convey that
growth, Firth would not only have to
learn how to stammer eff ectively, but
how to do so in a variety of ways. “I
am doing double duty [in the movie],”
explained Firth, in an interview with
the British Stammering Association.
“I have to learn to stammer and
ALL WORK AND NO PLAY
These actors risked life and limb (and in one
case, ribs) for extreme roles.
then I have to play someone trying
desperately not to.”
Luckily, Firth had a lot of
motivation for the momentous task.
As an Englishman, he knew that any
portrayal of a fi gure as beloved as King
George VI, father to Queen Elizabeth
and grandfather to Charles, would
be heavily scrutinized in his home
country. So Firth hit the books to avoid
coming across as being, as he has put
it, “in any way bogus.”
A bigger worry, though, was that
he might off end anyone affl icted
with a stutter if he didn’t perform
realistically. To achieve that, Firth
consulted multiple experts and spent
weeks studying the psychology behind
speech impediments. It helped that
the movie’s writer, David Seidler, had
battled a stammer for much of his life;
discussions with Seidler and other
stutterers led Firth to understand just
how incapacitating those problems
can be. “David described stammering
“FIRTH WAS SO INVESTED IN HIS ROLE
THAT HE EVEN STAMMERED WHILE
ACCEPTING AN AWARD FOR HIS
PERFORMANCE IN A SIMPLE MAN.”
as something which really is allconsuming,
that it’s not just an
inconvenience that you can isolate,”
he told NPR. “He said it became the
be-all and end-all of everything.” To
his credit, Firth was more than willing
to jump down the proverbial rabbit
real issue like this,” he has said, “I feel
I owe it to myself and to anybody who
struggles with it to be as authentic as
I can.”
Firth, of course, isn’t the fi rst actor
who has gone to extremes for a role.
Some actors’ parts call for reproducing
a complicated accent of some kind (see
Rob Morrow’s questionable Boston
accent in Quiz Show), while riskier roles
can involve the depiction of physical
and mental ailments, à la wheelchairbound
Tom Cruise in Born On the Fourth
of July (which went well) or a mentally
challenged Rosie O’Donnell in Riding
the Bus with My Sister (which didn’t).
Few actors have dedicated
themselves to the cause in quite the
all-encompassing way that Firth has in
The King’s Speech. The list of successful
stabs at extreme authenticity remains
so short because truly transformative
performances require an almost
pathological level of perfectionism—
and quite often, bodily injury. Given
their rarity, fi lms that feature such
immersive turns often become a thing
of legend: Marlon Brando in The Men,
Charlize Theron in Monster, Dustin
Hoffman in Rain Man.
It’s no secret that Method actors take
on the lifestyles of their characters in
order to completely understand them.
Marlon Brando confi ned himself to
a bed at an army hospital as a way
of preparing for his very fi rst screen
TALK OF THE TOWN Lionel Logue (Geoffrey Rush) teaches King George VI (Colin
role, as a disgruntled paraplegic
veteran in The Men. Jack Nicholson,
Al Pacino, Heath Ledger and other
acting luminaries have gone to similar
lengths, although none quite as
impressively as Daniel Day-Lewis,
who insisted on staying in character
during the entire shoot of My Left Foot
to better understand the everyday
miseries suffered by quadriplegic
writer Christy Brown. He broke two
ribs during the shoot.
Perhaps not as extreme, but certainly
harder on the body, are roles for which
actors gain or lose enormous amounts
of weight. To show formerly fi t boxer
Jake LaMotta’s fall from grace in the
closing scenes of Raging Bull, Robert De
Niro gained 60 pounds during a fourmonth
break in fi lming. To portray a
drug-addled soldier in 1996’s Courage
Under Fire, Matt Damon shed 40
pounds in just over three months; as a
result of stress infl icted on his adrenal
glands by the weight loss, he had to take
medication for years afterward. And of
course there’s Christian Bale, who lost
a whopping 63 pounds, and seemingly
every ounce of muscle and fat on his
body, during his borderline insane
preparation for his role as a tortured
insomniac in The Machinist. He had
even been planning to drop a further
20 pounds—and risk severe heart
trauma—until doctors intervened.
That Firth admits to having
experienced a mild form of paralysis
in his left arm, likely caused by
the stress of trying to speak with a
pitch-perfect accent and stutter, just
secures his place in the pantheon of
hyper-dedicated craftsmen. In fact,
so invested was he in the role and
so complete was his transformation
that in the midst of production, Firth
even stammered while accepting an
award for his performance in A Simple
Man. “[When I found out] he couldn’t
speak,” The King’s Speech director Tom
Hooper told The Los Angeles Times. “I
said, ‘That’s fantastic news!’”
By the end, Firth feared that the
stutter he so diligently affected might
stick with him forever—which wouldn’t
be an easy problem for a world-class
actor to have. But if his acceptance
speech at this year’s Golden Globes is
any indication, it appears that mom’s
old warning to “stop doing that or
it will get stuck that way” no longer
applies. The actor’s voice contained
no trace of the stammer. Instead of a
lifelong stutter, Firth ended up with a
big, golden statue.

By now, most people know that The Simpsons
is the longest-running show in the history of
television. After 22 seasons (at press time,
renewed for a 23rd) and 515 episodes, Homer
Simpson is almost as recognizeable as the US
was the most popular? According to statistics
from the Internet Movie Database, the public
rated “You Only Move Twice,” in which Homer
relocates the family to Cypress Creek to work
for a man who is bent on world domination,
highest, with 9.3 stars. “Simpsons Roasting
on an Open Fire,” the Christmas episode from
1989, received the most votes, with 2,128.
