TIME
Adapting Thor to the big
screen was no stroll through
Asgard. Two screenwriters
who tackled the task talk
about the potential pitfalls,
the Marvel Universe ... and
Shakespeare
BY ROD O’CONNOR
UNITED.COM • 5

6
There is perhaps no job more masochistic
than adapting a beloved comic to the big screen. With all the bloggers
and news outlets and teenage boys standing ready to denounce the tiniest
factual goof, just booting up the laptop is enough to make even the
steeliest Hollywood screenwriter quiver a bit in his elbow patches. Now
imagine: In addition to satisfying the great comic blogosphere, you also
have to be faithful to Norse mythology, and leave enough open plotlines to
enable the entire universe of Marvel’s earthbound crusaders to join forces
in the most ambitious comic book movie of all time. No big deal, right?
Despite the weight placed on their slender shoulders, screenwriters
Ashley Edward Miller and Zack Stentz (along with Don Payne) pulled off
a spirited—and largely faithful—big screen version of Thor, the Marvel
comic about the blond, brawny, hammer-wielding God of Thunder who
is banished to Earth by his wise but short-fused father Odin. Though
mostly guilty-pleasure popcorn fare, the movie stands on its own and
includes enough teasers to please hardcore fans salivating for The Avengers,
next summer’s Marvel movie that brings Thor together with Iron Man,
Captain America and the Hulk. The seeming impossibility of the task
notwithstanding, the movie has received favorable reviews and garnered
$434 million in worldwide box offi ce sales.
Miller and Stentz, who also co-wrote this summer’s X-Men: First Class
(another adored Marvel comic-based movie) are calling Thor an unqualifi
ed success. Here, they talk about meeting fans’ expectations, working
with Kenneth Branagh and the most time-honored theme in Hollywood:
powerful people behaving badly.
PLAY: So are you both serious comic
book fans?
STENTZ: I’m a Thor fan, but I came at
it much more from mythology. I was
a Greek and Norse mythology nut as
a kid.
MILLER: I’ve been a comic book fan
since I was li le, and particularly a fan
of Thor, believe it or not. I think that’s
one of the reasons we got the job. We
were able to talk about the character
and about the world authoritatively.
That’s a huge leg up for an adaptation.
PLAY: Is a working knowledge of the
character and universe a prerequisite for
adapting a superhero comic?
MILLER: Honestly, a comic book
adaptation is no diff erent from any
other adaptation. If you walk into the
job not understanding the material,
you have no business adapting it.
STENTZ: But just because you are a
fan doesn’t mean you have to be a
slave to the source. It’s like adapting a
play or a novel. You still use all of your
tools as a writer to determine what’s
going to translate from one medium
to another.
PLAY: What was the biggest challenge in
writing the screenplay?
STENTZ: We like to joke that there
were many, many ways of making a
bad Thor movie, and not very many
ways of making a good one. There
are a lot of potential pitfalls in the
material. It could very easily come
across as goofy or intellectual rather
than something that grabs you
emotionally.
PLAY: It must have been cool creating
what’s essentially a Shakespearean story
alongside director Kenneth Branagh, who’s
been doing Shakespeare for decades.
MILLER: It was one of the great
creative experiences of our careers.
I’ve been a fan of his since discovering
his adaptation of Henry V, which
turned me on to Shakespeare. What
was great about developing Thor with
him is that he was able to set aside
all the thees and thous and the pomp
and circumstance and say, “How is
this a story about these two boys and
their father?”
STENTZ: Ken gets that Shakespeare
wasn’t writing his history plays for
people who wanted to understand the
political landscape of Tudor England.
People were interested in these
incredibly emotional family dynamics.
He ended up being an inspired
choice to do Thor because he used
that same philosophy for this.
PLAY: The main diff erence is that he has a
much bigger budget to work with.
STENTZ: Yeah, I think the catering
budget on Thor was probably about
what was spent on Henry V. [Laughs]
PLAY: Is it an advantage to write about one
of the lesser-known Marvel heroes versus,
say, Spider-Man?

STENTZ: Every character in the
Marvel universe is someone’s absolute
favorite. There are people who
have spent their lives loving these
characters and have a Mjolnir [Thor’s
hammer] ta oo. But you can’t let that
stuff get into your head. And Marvel,
for their part, was great about not
pu ing pressure one way or the other
in terms of expectations. Obviously
we are building toward The Avengers,
but they very much wanted a movie
that could stand on its own and possibly,
knock on wood, launch a sequel.
PLAY: Do you ever check the fan sites to
fi nd out what people think?
STENTZ: I stay away from it while
we’re actually working. But a er the
fact, I’m intensely curious.
MILLER: Fans—and this includes us—
can be proprietary about the material
they love. They have favorite stories,
favorite moments. What’s important
to them is that what you do doesn’t
deny what they love. If you can manage
that, you can pre y much count
on them being pleased.
PLAY: So the notion of being totally “faithful”
to a comic book is sort of impossible?
STENTZ: Exactly. But that’s not to
say you don’t mine the material
for things that are great. There are
fantastic storylines in the comic
books, some of which you can
translate almost directly.
PLAY: In Thor, how did you decide what to
use from the comic and what to leave out?
STENTZ: Probably the most prominent
example is that in the original
comic books, Thor, like most of the
comic book heroes of the age, had an
alter ego [named] Donald Blake. He
was a partially handicapped medical
student who turned into Thor. There
were discussions back and forth at
Marvel, with the conclusion that an
alter ego who doesn’t even physically
look like the hero doesn’t work in a
movie context. So that was ditched.
But there are ways to nod at the idea
of Donald Blake, to say yes, we are
aware of this and in a way it becomes
a fun addition for the comic book
readers and goes over the heads of
everyone else.
PLAY: With The Avengers coming out next
year, these Marvel movies have become
more than standalone projects. Even
casual fans are looking for clues. Were you
directed to weave in plot points to connect
Thor to the rest of the Marvel universe?
MILLER: In some ways it was exactly
the opposite. The primary objective
was to write a great Thor movie
fi rst and let The Avengers take care
GOOD GODS ALMIGHTY Thor
(Chris Hemsworth) and Odin
(Anthony Hopkins) have a brief
meeting with Kenneth Branagh
UNITED.COM • 7
of itself. If anything, we probably
pushed more into the story that integrated
Thor to the rest of the universe
than anyone initially anticipated.
PLAY: It must be fun as writers to play with
all of those teasers, the Easter eggs. For
example, you briefl y mentioned Hawkeye,
another superhero who’s going to be in The
Avengers.
MILLER: Absolutely. I think our fi rst
dra of Thor had more Easter eggs
than the White House lawn.
STENTZ: The thing in superhero
movies for a while was to treat each
emergence of a superhero as the
fi rst time that it had happened in
the entire world. And to make each
universe complete and independent.
And if you’re a comic book reader,
you know that there is the Marvel
universe and the DC universe—these
wonderful, rich places, where sometimes
one superhero might interact
with another. That hadn’t really
happened in a big way in movies until
Marvel started this experiment.
PLAY: What can you tell us about
The Avengers?
MILLER: To paraphrase Agent Coulson
(a S.H.I.E.L.D. agent in Iron Man and
Thor), they don’t tell us anything.
PLAY: And a Thor sequel?
STENTZ: We don’t know anything
offi cially other than looking at the
global box offi ce steadily ticking
towards $450 million and thinking
that not many fi lms make that much
money without ge ing sequels.
MILLER: Obviously we want to see
Thor continue. We feel like parents
and there’s our li le boy, and he’s
big and beautiful and everybody
likes him…
STENTZ: And he has a hammer.
