WORLD’S TOUGHEST FIXES HOST
SEAN RILEY TALKS ABOUT HIS MOST
EXTREME JOBS, GETTING HAZED BY
WORK CREWS AND WHY HE’D MAKE
AN IDEAL HUSBAND (SORT OF).
BY JOHN SELLERS
For most men, fixing stuff means successfully
navigating the scrum at Home
Depot to pick up an obscure sink part, or
whipping up a plate of killer scrambled
eggs, or handing the car keys to a trusted
mechanic. Noble and important skills, all,
but they pale in comparison to the feats
professional set designer and engineering geek Sean
Riley pulls off . As the host of National Geographic Channel’s
World’s Toughest Fixes, the 35-year-old Riley travels
the world helping corporations and governments solve
costly industrial snafus. These complex jobs, which Riley
breaks down for the viewer using animated graphics
and quirky, can-do charm, put him in some improbable
UNITED.COM • 5
6
situations: dangling from a helicopter
to inspect live power lines, suiting up
for a radiation zone at a nuclear power
plant and climbing half a mile to the
top of a broken antenna. In short, it’s
not the kind of stuff your average
handyman can handle, but by doing it,
Riley provides a riveting glimpse into
high-stakes project management (not
to mention actual riveting).
Riley has a home in San Francisco,
where he also operates Gravity Design,
a rigging company, but he has been on
the road virtually nonstop since World’s
Toughest Fixes launched in 2008. While
he’s got something like the ultimate
guy’s job, the unmarried man says he’s
increasingly game for settling down.
“I’m everything a girl could ever want,
except for the fact that I’m gone 320
days a year,” he jokes. “But if you can
put up with that…”
You’ve helped fi x everything from an
atom smasher to the Alaskan pipeline.
How are you at changing light bulbs?
I am, in fact, very handy. I love to
build my own stuff and fi x my own
house, fi x my car. Partially because it’s
cheaper, but also because I actually
get a kick out of understanding how
things work. If something that I don’t
know anything about breaks, my fi rst
instinct is to take it apart.
Any idea where that urge comes
from? I grew up on a goat farm in
Oregon and then a walnut orchard
in northern California—so, there are
a bunch of farming and agricultural
applications in my history. Coming
from farm people, you defi nitely
do things with what you got, and
you fi x stuff any way you can. I was
introduced pre y early to the idea of
self-suffi ciency. I took a lot of things
apart. I even got most of them back
together again.
Did you ever get busted for ruining
something? I was pre y careful. I
didn’t take apart anything critical or
anything that anyone would miss
during the period of time it took to
get it back together again. In that way,
I learned project management: If you
can get it apart, check it out, and get
it back together again before Mom
notices, hey, you’re good.
Some of the scenes in World’s
Toughest Fixes require you to put
yourself at extreme risk. Is there
anything you’re afraid of? I’m scared
of everything. I have a very healthy
respect for the dangers that are
inherent to the job we do. I’m scared
of heights, I would say, but I don’t let
that fear control my body. I don’t let
that fear overcome my desire to get
something done.
Didn’t you work on a 2,000-foot
tower in South Dakota? Okay, it
might be a stretch to say I’m scared
of heights. I have a respect for what
heights can do.
Do things ever go very wrong once
you’re up there? Oh, yeah. What we’re
trying to get done is an inherently
frustrating thing. These are not
P.R. stunts. We’re picking genuinely
large-scale, diffi cult problems, and
there’s a lot of money and resources
on the line. And there can be a lot of
high emotion, especially when you
approach a project like a nuclear
power plant that’s going to do a swapout.
And believe me, things don’t
always go right the fi rst time.
You’ve assisted some major corporations.
Before episodes of the show
aired, was it hard convincing them
to let cameras document the fi x?
That’s a fantastic question, and you’re
right to phrase it “before the show
aired.” Certainly once the show was
on for a couple years and gained some
traction, people knew that the focus
of the show is not on blame. We’re not
there to point a fi nger. Because, let’s
be honest, if you’re showcasing large,
broken items, in most cases somebody
somewhere screwed up. So I defi nitely
had to do a lot of convincing with
these companies—and with the crews
that do the actual work.
Right. Some of the workers must be
a li le wary of working with some
yahoo from the outside. Totally.
And I understand that hesitancy,
and that mistrust. Because I would
share it, to be honest. These are very
dangerous things that we do on the
show. If somebody called me and told
me that some yahoo from Hollywood
was gonna be hanging out at the site
running around, my fi rst reaction
would be, “Stay over here, don’t touch
anything, don’t talk to any of my guys.”
It takes a while for them to realize
that I know what I’m talking about.
Do the crews haze you? Are you kidding
me? I am the perpetual new guy.
I’m the new guy on every crew—and
the one with a camera and a target
on his back. You go through a certain
amount of ribbing. That’s part of the
process of building trust.
Shaving cream pies to the face? It’s
more verbal stuff . And every industry
has its own particular jokes. You know,
somebody will send a rookie to get
some specialty thing that sounds
plausible, like, “Get the cam lube.”
Cams need to be lubricated, I guess.
You can spend an hour going from
PHOTOGRAPH BY PETE TAKACS/NATIONAL GEOGRAPHIC TELEVISION
person to person looking for cam lube,
and it’s a good joke for everybody until
you realize that cam lube doesn’t exist.
It’s called World’s Toughest Fixes.
Shouldn’t you be helping to overhaul
the U.S. healthcare system? Wow.
Well, I will say this. In order to get
anything fi xed, you have to have
everybody involved genuinely interested
in fi xing it. Only then can you
generate the willpower and teamwork
necessary.
Do you think you could save the
Spider-Man musical on Broadway?
Funny you should mention that.
That’s right up our alley. And I
have a really good friend working
on that—he was hired a er some
accidents on set. What I would say
about that is that sometimes you can
judge the diffi culty of a project by its
failures. It’s easy to say, “This thing is
breaking all the time.” But you have
to judge that against the ambition
and the diffi culty of what they’re
trying to achieve. I think that’s true of
Spider-Man. It’s also true, for example,
of NASA.
Can you fi x a
Ming vase that
falls on the
fl oor? Sure, you
can superglue
it back
together. But
broken hearts?
Good luck lu
with th that that.
A BIG FLOP Sean Riley plunges into
UNITED.COM • 7
How so? They built, what, fi ve
shu les? And almost half of them had
design issues. It’s not a track record
that would inspire you to get into a
car they made, right? But if you weigh
that against the incredible, intricate
diffi culty of what they’re trying to
achieve, it’s a diff erent picture. Can
Spider-Man be fi xed? Certainly. But
sometimes you have to think twice.
When you see that much failure, you
think maybe what they’re trying to
achieve is a li le too diffi cult.
Is it hard for you to give up on
something? It’s not in my nature to
give up. I’ll keep trying until they pull
me off the problem. I like to believe
that my crew and I can do anything.
But the truth is, you can do anything
with the right amount of time and the
right amount of money.
Some things can’t be fi xed, though.
I would take exception to that. I’d say
anything in the world can be fi xed.
The question is, is it worth it?
Well, what about a unique work of
art? In theory, it’s fi xable. Can you fi x
a Ming vase that falls on the fl oor?
You can superglue it back together.
But, okay, you’re right—some things
can’t be fi xed. Broken hearts? Good
luck with that.
You’ve been everywhere for this
show. What else is le to fi x? There
are a couple of things. Should we start
with the space station? I’d work on the
space station in a heartbeat. I would
love to go into space. I still would love
to get to Antarctica and work on one
of those research stations.
No time like the present! Boy, you
know, to be quite honest, I’m going
to sit this weekend out. Cook eggs
Benedict, read my book, watch the
sunset and then get back in the game
on Monday morning. But for now, I’m
ready for a break.

“There is not a drab image or a middling performance in the piece. The freewheeling adaptation drops needless scenes and spurs the
story ahead with galloping momentum.”—Minneapolis Star-Tribune
Based on Charlotte Brontë’s classic novel, this adaptation tells the story of an orphan who now works as a governess for a wealthy and
moody landowner, Mr. Rochester. The isolated and imposing residence and Mr. Rochester’s coldness have sorely tested the young
woman’s resilience, but as Jane reflects upon her past and recovers her natural curiosity, she will learn more of Mr. Rochester and the
terrible secret that he is hiding.
