002
Hello and welcome to Jetstar Magazine. This
month, Jetstar celebrates its seventh birthday.
We’ve come a long way since our fi rst fl ight in
May 2004 and are extremely pleased to have
delivered seven years of all day, everyday low fares to
our customers, making air travel more accessible and
enjoyable for all.
What better way to celebrate than by taking a break?
You’ll fi nd plenty of great holiday ideas in this month’s
magazine and at Jetstar.com.
Recent improvements we’ve made to save time for
our customers at Australian airports include new SMS
boarding-pass technology. Passengers who choose SMS
boarding will receive a unique code sent directly to their
mobile phone 24 hours before departure. This code is
simply scanned at a Jetstar Self-Service Kiosk to produce
a boarding pass and baggage tags. Passengers can then
self-tag and drop their bags, before proceeding straight
to the departure gate to board their Jetstar fl ight. It’s
now available on our Australian domestic network and in
New Zealand, and will be rolled out across the rest of the
MAY
A MONTH OF
COOL TO-DOS
A NIGHT
TO DREAM
Shakespeare’s comedy of romantic
entanglements and magic comes to life
amid a modern setting this month. We
spoke with Kate Cherry, the director
of A Midsummer Night’s Dream (MND)
and the artistic director of Perth’s Black
Swan State Theatre Company.
WHY IS MND SUCH A CROWD-PLEASER?
It’s a cracking great story of love and
longing, magic and mayhem. Ultimately,
it’s the quintessential romantic comedy.
It’s extremely funny, has some sexy
young people at the heart of the play,
and wonderful comedians. The language
is highly accessible and the ideas in
the play are still relevant today.
TELL US YOUR VISION AS THE
DIRECTOR OF THIS PRODUCTION.
I envision a sensual, evocative
production that celebrates passion,
loyalty and transformation. The set is
a visual feast, transforming the stage
into an enchanting forest on a moonlit
midsummer’s night. The costumes
are fanciful and joyous. It should be
a highly entertaining production with
a hint of darkness and daring, and
wonderment laced in.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream is on 7–22
May. Heath Ledger Theatre, State Theatre
Centre. BOCS Ticketing, tel: (08) 9484 1133.
Kenny Wizz
THRILLING
MOVES
LA-born Kenny Wizz is famous for his
impersonation of Michael Jackson. He
tells us about his unique career.
WHAT MADE MICHAEL A SUPERSTAR?
Besides the fact that he was the
ultimate entertainer, his charisma,
charm, genius, sensitivity to others,
and his innovation in music videos.
WHY DID YOU BECOME A MICHAEL
JACKSON IMPERSONATOR?
I didn’t decide — the public, which
knew me as a street performer,
pushed me into this fi eld. Since I
had the curly hair and people were
telling me that I resembled MJ, I
started doing it for fun. Before I
knew it, I had an agent and was
starting to get some serious offers.
WHAT IS HARDEST TO IMPERSONATE?
Singing and dancing at the same time.
WHAT DO YOU HOPE PEOPLE TAKE
AWAY FROM YOUR PERFORMANCES?
I hope they can feel the magic,
energy and love that Mr. Jackson
once shared.
WHAT WOULD YOU SAY TO HIM NOW?
I would simply say to him, “Don’t
stop ’til you get enough”!
10 MINUTES
WITH…
HUGO
WEAVING
The award-winning veteran actor is
back with his new fi lm Oranges and
Sunshine — based on the true story of the
deportation of thousands of children from
the UK to Australia after World War II
WHAT MADE YOU DECIDE TO TAKE ON
THE ROLE OF JACK, ONE OF THE NOW
GROWN-UP CHILDREN?
The script arrived, and I took notice when I
knew that Jim Loach was directing, as I’ve
been a huge fan of his father’s fi lms. It was
a combination of the right script, director
and an incredibly moving story.
HOW DID YOU RELATE TO JACK?
Well, it’d be quite hard not to relate to
the story. You’d have to be inhuman. It’s
an incredibly sad story, about someone
whose life was almost destroyed.
WHAT DID YOU USE TO FLESH OUT AND
INFORM YOUR PERFORMANCE?
I met the man on whom the character of
Jack was based, who’d been sent out as a
child from England at the age of 10.
It was very easy to understand
his pain. My own mother was
taken away from her family
during the war, when she
was only four. If you’re a
child who is taken away,
you miss the love and
nurturing that you
should be getting.
HOW HAS A TRUE STORY ABOUT A GROSS
INJUSTICE LIKE ORANGES AND SUNSHINE
AFFECTED YOU ON A PERSONAL LEVEL?
It didn’t happen to me, so in a way it’s not
personal. However, I do try to understand
what it’s like to be in someone else’s shoes
— I try to illuminate the character to make
it come alive. But then again, as an actor
I’m affected by almost everything, as we’re
constantly learning.
IS IT MORE DIFFICULT TO PORTRAY A
REAL-LIFE CHARACTER?
The challenge lies in the psychological
investigative work. I have to almost mimic
the character and explore why they’re like
that. However, in the end it’s the same
process, whether it’s a real-life character
or not.
HOW DID YOU ENJOY WORKING WITH
EMILY WATSON?
It was absolutely delightful. I love her work
— Breaking the Waves was the fi rst fi lm I’d
seen from her many years ago. She’s warm,
smiley and sensitive, with an easy strength
about her — and she’s a brilliant actress.
AND DAVID WENHAM?
I only have one small scene with David,
unfortunately. However, we did have a
couple of nights out on the town! I’m also
an admirer of his work.
WHAT WAS A TYPICAL DAY ON SET LIKE?
Jim Loach is a calm, sensitive and intelligent
man to work with. The material was
raw and very emotional, but it was easy
to accomplish. I spent one day in
Nottingham, and fi ve in Adelaide, but
the actual work on set was just very
easy. It’s just a joy and privilege to
work with Emily and Jim.
OUTSIDE OF ACTING, WHAT RELAXES YOU?
I like to read a lot, but really, my primary
focus is my family. I also love travelling.
Oranges and Sunshine is in theatres from
9 June.
AUTUMN
FLAVOURS
What and where we’re sipping,
nibbling and cooking this month as
footy season and Mother’s Day roll up
MORE THAN JUST MALL FOOD
The food-and-drink options inside the
new AU$1.2 billion Westfi eld Sydney
have revolutionised the Sydney dining
experience. Project centre manager Rachele
Godridge says: “We knew this was going to
be an iconic fashion destination, so we’ve
added a great range of food to complement
the four levels of fashion below. From
Charlie & Co’s wagyu burgers to Din Tai
Fung’s dumplings, Westfi eld Sydney is a
fusion of top food and fashion.”
Indeed, the offerings on levels fi ve and
Moore, Simon Goh and Alessandro Pavoni.
Moore’s artisan sausage grill, The Snag
Stand, elevates the humble Aussie sausage
sizzle to haute dog status, and is home to
the great New York-style sandwich, The
Reuben. John Susman’s Cloudy Bay Fish
Company takes fi sh and chips to a new
level with the catch of the day grilled, fried,
sandwiched or with salad.
For the juiciest
burgers and delish
sides of parmesan and
go past Justin and
Georgia North’s Charlie
October. Last month,
they also opened Quarter
FROM DUSK
’TIL DAWN
THE COOL ON
COLLINGWOOD
The transformation of Collingwood,
Melbourne, to culinary hotspot is
bringing in a new wave of visitors
9am: Start the day buzzing with breakfast
at Proud Mary (172 Oxford St, Collingwood,
tel +61 (3) 9417 5930), generally regarded
as having Melbourne’s best coffee. Their
espresso machine is said to be the only one
of its kind in Australia and worth a fortune,
which is probably why only the city’s best
baristas are allowed to touch it.
10.30am: Collingwood might be known
for its clothing factory outlets, but the
real gems and bargains are located at
the Lost and Found Market (12 Smith St,
Collingwood, tel +61 (3) 9419 4477), which
has four fl oors packed with vintage clothing,
books, furniture and general bric-à-brac.
12pm: It might be in Fitzroy but cross over
the road briefl y to the Crumpler Custom
Store (85 Smith St, Fitzroy, tel +61 (3)9417
5776), it’s worth the 10-second dash just
FOOD /// STYLE /// DRINKS /// PLACES /// EVENTS /// PROFILES
to see these iconic messenger, camera and
travel bags being made fi rst-hand.
12.30pm: Wade through the sea of locals
lining up for their daily fi x of Trippy Taco
(48 Smith St, Collingwood, tel +61 (3) 9415
7711) vego Mexican fare and enjoy the
incredible value for money. The burrito is
delish and big enough for two, though the
“trippy fries” could be the Collingwood dish.
2pm: For that hard-to-fi nd blues album, or
if in search of some tunes from independent
local artists, it’s likely that The Last Record
Store (304 Smith St, Collingwood, +61 (3)
9416 2000) stocks it. You know the place
is respected when a song was named in its
honour and staff are happy to offer insights
into Collingwood’s pub music scene.
4pm: Monsieur Truffe’s (90 Smith St,
Collingwood, tel +61(3) 9416 3101) speciality
is the decadent array of chocolate, derived
mostly from speciality cocoa beans in South
America. As you would expect, their thick
hot chocolate knocks back any afternoon
CHRIS BADENOCH
“A few years
ago Smith
Street was
a place you
wouldn’t
really hang
out at night
as it was
still a bit
dodgy, but
things have
changed”
CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT:
Proud Mary; Monsieur
Truffe’s hot chocolate;
tram it to Smith Street
chills. A perfect place to read the paper.
6pm: Masterchef star Chris Badenoch, a
local boy and new restaurateur, has seen
his vision come alive at Josie Bones (98
Smith St, Collingwood, tel +61 (3) 9417
1878). He complements a 200-strong beer
list (perhaps the city’s best) with an array
of unusual dishes such as Trotter Fritters
and Rolled Pigs Head. “Josie Bones brings
a serious side to beer and a dedicated
approach to the Entire Beast philosophy to
eating meat. It’s an important approach to
eating and we intend to show people that
alternative cuts are not as scary as some
people may imagine.”
9pm: Iconic music venue and Melbourne
institution The Tote Hotel (67 Johnston
St, Collingwood, tel +61 (3) 9419 5320)
showcases a gritty array of local and
international acts that like to play it loud.
Wear the entry stamp with pride and don’t
forget that the beer garden often has free
late night barbecues if you’re peckish.
WHY IS THE UGG BOOT SUCH AN
AUSTRALIAN FASHION ITEM?
The Ugg sheepskin footwear has
been a part of Australian culture
for decades, having warmed the
feet of World War II pilots and now
fashionistas. We’ve developed many
styles, added real rubber walking
WHAT WAS IT LIKE GROWING UP?
I think I was born in Uggs! I
remember dad would make the boots
in our St Kilda apartment, and mum
would take the new designs and
bestsellers to Queen Victoria Market.
From a young age, dad let me
INFORMATION
DESK
THE ART OF
EXCITEMENT
A generous gambler has turned
his dream into reality with the bold
opening of Hobart’s MONA
The biggest private museum collection in
Australia opened near Hobart in January.
Spectacular and controversial, the
amazing MONA — brainchild of brilliant
eccentric David Walsh — is delighting and
challenging visitors. Whichever way you
sway, it’s an experience not to miss. We
chat to MONA’s chief curator Nicole Durling
about the museum and its other highlights.
WHY MONA?
It’s the Museum of Old and New Art. We
have pieces here that span 60 centuries —
the oldest work being about 6,000 years
old, and the newest completed just before
the museum opened in January. Then
there’s the 200 to 250 million-year-old
Triassic sandstone that’s also part of the
museum building.
IS IT TRUE IT’S ABOUT SEX AND DEATH?
It’s been said, but I’d like to debunk that.
MONA has a much broader curatorial focus.
It’s a non-linear exhibition of international
and Australian ancient and contemporary
art. It’s about Darwinism, it’s utilitarian,
it’s about portraiture and ritual, and it’s
also about coming to terms with one’s
own mortality. MONA is about the whole
experience — the building as well as the
art — and the ideas behind the art; it’s
also interactive.
EAT
DRINK
SLEEP
MONA is set on
Morilla Estate,
famous for its
brilliant wines,
Moo Brew beer
and fantastic food.
You can eat in the
MONA café; have
a drink in the Void
Bar down inside
the museum; hang
out in the estate’s
fabulous Wine Bar;
and enjoy fi ne dining
with amazing water
views at The Source.
Afterwards, go down
and slip into bed in
one of their eight
wonderful pavilions.
WHO IS DAVID WALSH?
He’s someone who’s extremely passionate
and has some amazing ideas. He’s got a
gift for mathematics and art. He has an
amazingly different way of approaching
problems and that’s how he made his
fortune. He’s also an extremely generous
individual, to allow people to come here
and look in his “lounge room” so to speak.
THE MUSEUM BUILDING CLINGS TO A
CLIFF-SIDE ABOVE THE RIVER DERWENT,
AND COST AU$75 MILLION TO BUILD?
Yes, it’s built over a sandstone cliff that’s
12m from top to bottom, covering three
levels of the building, allowing a 6,000m2 gallery space. Cutting away the side of the
WHAT ARE THE EXHIBITION HIGHLIGHTS?
For me, a piece called Pulse Room, by
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer which uses 108 light
And Pausiris, an Egyptian mummy and
sarcophagus. It’s set on an island in a
room fi lled with black water, and there’s
a projection of a CAT scan of the mummy
itself: quite surreal and wonderful. And the
museum at MONA is completely free and
always will be. We’re committed to that.
Now is a fi ne time to visit Bangkok, as
the recent political tension has stabilised.
Restaurants, hotels and shopping centres
are offering sales and discounts. April to
October is the low season for travel in
Thailand. So tourist attractions — the Grand
Golden Mountain, Temple of the Dawn,
The Temple of the Reclining Buddha and
many more historical tourist attractions
on Rattanakosin Island — can be visited
without any hassle. In fact, you can get
everything at a bargain price!
Bangkok is safe for overseas tourists and
their families. There are often peaceful
gatherings, and some roads in these areas
may be closed to traffi c, but it doesn’t
create any inconvenience for tourists. Try
Rattanakosin Exhibition Hall, which explains
Bangkok city’s history and is a nice spot
for taking pictures, and Golden Mount of
Wat Sasek. The Old City by Segway tour
is becoming more popular. Bike tours are
fantastic for adults and children. The new
museum at Ananta Samakhom Throne Hall
should not be missed.
Bangkok traffi c is chaotic, but the Skytrain
and subway systems are effi cient. Check out
the long-tail boats along the canals, which
is fun for the kids. Dusit Zoo, Bangkok’s
oldest zoo, has a collection of popular
African and Asian mammals, and birds in
a garden. With an additional section for
children, it’s ideal for families. Bangkok also
has man-made attractions like Siam Ocean
Siam Park, Dream World and Safari World
for families to explore. Many hotels have
NOT FOR
NOTHING
TROPICAL
PARADISE
AT WORK
Volunteering for a paradise-like bird
sanctuary on Bali’s Nusa Penida island
hardly seems anything like work
Located off Bali’s south-east coast and
touted as one of its “best-kept secrets”
in my dated Lonely Planet guidebook, I
expected Nusa Penida to be anything but.
Yet as I wave goodbye to the tourist hordes,
and fi nd myself between chickens and their
owners on a small runabout for the
14km-journey, I begin to wonder.
An hour later, colourful fi shing boats
bob gently along a coconut
tree-lined coast, as seaweed
farmers haul bulging bamboo
baskets back to their traditional
thatched huts for sorting. No
touts, no hotels. It feels like I’ve
just stepped back in time.
A sanctuary from tourists, the
20,000ha island is also a haven
for rare birds. The Friends of the
National Parks Foundation (FNPF),
has been re-populating species
such as the Mitchell’s lorikeet,
the Java sparrow, the red lory and the Bali
starling — all endangered due to poachers
— via a captive breed-and-release program
on the island since 2004.
I’m here as part of FNPF’s new
volunteer program, which offers tourists
the opportunity to give hands-on help to
the project, while experiencing life in a
traditional Balinese village. Volunteers
spend the morning tree-planting and
teaching English in schools, and the
afternoon exploring the island.
After settling into my volunteer quarters
— a jungle-bamboo bungalow — I’m put to
work, which comprises potting up seedlings
ready for planting in the large reforestation
You’ll have it all to
The writer pauses for a
seedlings in the nursery
BOTTOM: The Bali
area, which aims to provide the birds with a
long-term habitat and food.
Dr Bayu Wirayudha, the charismatic
leader of FNPF, believes the volunteer
program is about cultural exchange as it
is about helping in the fi eld. “Long-term
volunteers can learn traditional skills such
as dancing, carving or weaving.”
Dave Campbell, a teacher from Geelong,
his wife Ceridwyn and children Skyla (seven)
and Melody (four), taught English in primary
schools during their volunteer stint.
“We were an instant sensation in the
classroom; the kids were so enthusiastic.
It was fantastic to see our children playing
with the local kids. Volunteering is a unique
way to travel as a family. We had a real
Education on sustainable
farming and the promoting of
eco-tourism are benefi ts that
locals receive from the FNPF
BOTTOM: Dave Campbell and
his family had a great time
integrating into the local culture
immersion into the community.”
For Wirayudha, working closely with
the locals is the key to the success of the
program. “I spent the fi rst two years talking
with communities, and now all 41 villages
on the island have established traditional
regulations to enforce bird protection.”
Part of the ‘social contract’ that
Wirayudha has struck with the islanders
is that in exchange for protecting
birds and their habitats, FNPF delivers
028
community benefi ts, such as freely
distributing thousands of trees each year
for agroforestry, sustainable farming
education, promoting eco-tourism, and an
education scholarship for children to attend
school and university (especially girls).
Village children gather in the FNPF grounds
twice a week to attend free traditional
dance classes, and the annual inter-school
‘Conservation Competition’ is now a major
part of the Independence Day celebrations.
Today, the proof is in the pudding.
The Bali starling, the island’s emblem,
numbered less than 10 in the wild in 2005,
due to a hefty bounty on its head (birds
fetch up to AU$1,000 on the black market).
A release of 64 cage-bred starlings between
2006 and 2008 by FNPF has since resulted
in the birds doubling that number.
On our return trip, we check on
two recently released male lesser
sulphur-crested cockatoos, who have joined
DR BAYU WIRAYUDHA
“The
program is
about much
more than
just birds.
It’s about
wildlife,
habitats and
the people;
that’s what
makes it
successful”
the only three females left in the wild.
Unaware of the urgency of their union, the
cockatoo courtship is slow.
Sitting around the fi re that night with
my guide Wayan, I almost feel guilty that I
have received far more from my experience
than I could ever return. I look up to see a
streak of white swooping into a nearby nest
box. Wayan smiles and tells me, “The Bali
starling says ‘thank you’.”
It costs AU$15 a day to stay with FNPF.
Meals from the nearby warung (restaurant)
costs AU$1. Accommodation comprises
single beds with mosquito nets. It’s best
for volunteers to stay for at least a week.
Nusa Penida is a short boat ride from Bali —
twice-daily boats cost IDR40,000 (AU$4.50)
from Padang bai, and IDR70,000 (AU$8)
from Sanur. For more details or to donate
THE
BIZ
A THIRST
FOR BUSINESS
Founded by three Melbourne schoolmates,
NutrientWater has enjoyed success with its
benefi cial beverages, and is now ready for
new ventures, says director Luke Marget
TELL US ABOUT NUTRIENTWATER’S
BEGINNINGS, AND YOUR ROLE IN IT ALL.
Matt Dennis, Brad Wilson and I started the
company from scratch in 2005 — with no
previous beverage experience and working
from a small offi ce above a garage. It was
just the three of us, so we each covered
various roles, and simply shared whatever
needed to be done.
HOW DID NUTRIENTWATER GROW AND
DEVELOP TO THE PRODUCT IT IS TODAY?
We experienced triple-digit growth in the
early years, which we put down to a great
team that was determined to succeed
against the big guys. We travelled to
every corner of the country to support
our distributors — some of them doubted
us initially, but have gone on to become
our strongest partners. Fortunately, our
persistence paid off.
WHY DO YOU THINK NUTRIENTWATER HAS
BEEN SUCH A SUCCESS?
We developed a range which, above all,
delivers on quality and taste. We then set
about creating a new brand with an edgier,
slightly irreverent personality, which would
appeal to health-conscious adults. The
tongue-in-cheek messages on our labels
appealed to a broad audience, and the
NutrientWater brand quickly became a hit.
030
WHAT TRIALS AND TRIBULATIONS HAVE
YOU FACED ALONG THE WAY, AND HOW
DID YOU OVERCOME THEM?
Where do we start? Every aspect of our
business presents ongoing challenges —
however, none more so than maintaining
a retail presence for our products.
Recently, we invested heavily in smarter
sales technology, which delivers relevant
information to our fi eld sales team.
NOW, NUTRIENTWATER HAS DEVELOPED
AN ENTIRELY NEW BRAND, COCOBELLA.
TELL US ABOUT IT.
cocobella is a drink made from the clear
water inside young green coconuts, and is
the ultimate hydration drink. It’s naturally
reward initiative in
your organisation,
and don’t consider
private enterprise
unless you’re
prepared to work
hard. Innovation is
a continued driver
of success for our
business and is
our major focus. In
2009 we extended
our range with
NutrientWaterX,
which is sweetened
naturally with zerocalorie
stevia leaf.
in South-East Asia and countries like Brazil
have been consuming coconut water for
its rapid hydration and its replenishment
properties for centuries. In fact, we fi rst
drank coconut water straight from the
coconut while on holiday in Thailand, and
agreed it would complement our healthy
philosophy perfectly. Right now, we have
just secured distribution for cocobella in
Coles, Woolworths and Fitness First outlets,
so I would say that it’s a pretty big focus of
ours right now.
The free-spirited
Emma Booth is sitting in a café
in Fremantle, Western Australia,
indulging in a full-milk latte with
sugar and loving it. “I don’t usually drink
coff ee,” she explains. “I’m usually pretty
healthy, but I was up at 6.30am today.”
Standing tall at 1.73m with striking blue
eyes and naturally blonde hair, Booth
could pass for a beautiful uni student with
her casual-chic outfi t of denim shorts,
a black singlet, thongs, a sunhat and a
crystal chain hanging around her neck.
“I just moved out of my apartment
in Sydney, so I don’t have a base. I love
spending more time in Perth with my
family and with friends in Byron Bay,”
the 29-year-old says. “I wouldn’t have it
any other way. I’m a free spirit. This is the
perfect job for constant change and not
being tied down. Not having a nine-to-fi ve
job really suits me.”
She adds happily: “I grew up in
Fremantle, and I love having a chance
to spend time here. I’ll always be a
Fremantle girl.” It’s hard to believe this
down-to-earth natural beauty is the same
dark-haired temptress who starred as the
infamous prostitute-turned-police cadet
Kim Hollingsworth in Underbelly: The
Golden Mile on the Nine Network in 2010.
“I love being a brunette, dark hair is
really striking,” she says. “I’m naturally
very blonde. I went from really blonde to
almost black hair for Underbelly, to white
blonde, and then I swerved back to brown
hair for cloudstreet. I never even blow-dry
it when I’m not working and I hardly ever
wear make-up.”
Surprisingly, this gorgeous former
model isn’t into clothes either. “It’s fun
getting dressed up, but it’s not a major
part of my life. I love really cute and
quirky stuff .” On location at Opera Bar,
Sydney, to shoot these images, Booth’s
modelling experience is soon evident, as
she moves eff ortlessly for the camera.
STAR STRUCK
With the only other possible career
draw being holistic health, and having
used modelling as a stepping stone to
her dream job, Booth says she has always
wanted to act. “My family has a lot of
videos to prove it,” she chuckles. “I was
constantly making plays at school and at
home. I’ve always loved the idea of playing
other characters. It was easy for me to
go into acting, because you’re playing
characters when modelling as well.”
Although she has no formal acting
training, Booth says she has learnt by
example. “I did classes at
night every Thursday for
a term in WA to get the
basics down when I was
doing a bit of modelling. It
was my transition period.”
This quick learner then made the
career switch from modelling to her fi lm
debut in Clubland, opposite English
actress Brenda Blethyn. The dramatic
love story premiered to great acclaim at
the Sundance Film Festival and Booth’s
performance scored her a slew of awards.
“Sundance was quite an eye-opening
experience, because I’d only done one fi lm
at that point, which had a major premiere
there,” she explains. “It was a whole other
world — meeting all the casting agents and
036
“I’ve always loved the idea
of playing other characters”
— Gwyneth Paltrow and Jared Leto were
walking past in beanies and scarves.”
Soon after, Booth played Clive Owen’s
love interest in The Boys are Back in
Adelaide. “I’d always wanted to work with
Clive Owen,” she says. “He’s one of my
favourite actors. He kept to himself but he
was very down-to-earth and funny. We
had a ball on set.”
This natural beauty says she is “mostly
vegetarian” since getting into yoga and
meditation last year. “I’ve made quite a
few lifestyle changes, and I feel much
healthier. I’ve always dabbled in yoga
Bali: “I feel an amazing connection to Bali.
and meditation, but I wanted to follow
a deeper path. Kundalini yoga is my
favourite type of yoga, because it has an
energetic fl ow and is very spiritual.”
Booth is clearly no gym bunny but
blessed with a model’s metabolism, she
simply grabs her iPod and goes for a
45-minute power walk whenever she
feels the need. She adds, “Doing yoga and
meditation helps me stay grounded in the
acting world. Last year was emotionally
HUNKY DORY SOCIAL CLUB
There’s more than a good dose of New
York’s East Village about the rooftop at
Hunky Dory Social Club. Beneath the
glow of the advertising billboard, cluster
of lime trees and a Bird of Paradise
hipsters, willowy models and celebrities
like Baz Luhrmann and Hugh Sheridan.
Twenty-something Melburnian
entrepreneurs Richard Garland and Chris
Cinerari launched the three-level terrace
bar and restaurant (Bruno’s) in February
after negotiating 18 months of red tape.
As they waited, they went wild sourcing
the bar’s unusual furnishings and fi ttings
“from all across the eastern seaboard”;
including a full-sized taxidermic peacock,
original convict bricks (with love hearts
chipped in) and two gothic Parisian lamps.
The vibe is young and fl ippant, with
an impressive cocktail menu, cleverly
presented inside vintage Little Golden
Books. “We thought it’d work for people
on an awkward fi rst date,” explains
Garland. “It’s something to talk about.”
Hidden beneath a mock alterations shop
complete with sewing machines, balls
of yarn and fabric hanging askew, Stitch
is one of Sydney’s newest and most
clandestine small bars. “I think I have
Australia’s biggest collection of Singer
sewing machines,” laughs co-owner
Karl Schlothauer. “I did a road trip to
Melbourne to get 10, and bought more
from the outer suburbs of Sydney. My
sister brought some from Brisbane too.”
Cocktails reign supreme at Stitch
because mixologist and co-owner
Christophe Lehoux is particular about
his tipple. Try a Negroni, served with love
and a paddle pop stick for stirring. As far
as bar snacks go, the focus is on American
diner fare. Order the curly fries for a salt
fi x — the basement bar cooks up about 50
kilograms of the fries a night.
THE NORFOLK HOTEL
It’s the latest drinkery to open on the
“Cleveland Street Cluster”, an edgy area
on the outskirts of Surry Hills. With a
tongue-in-cheek menu featuring Jack
Daniels and Coke slushies, largeritas
(that’s beer margarita, for the uninitiated)
and Bloody Marys served in recycled
Campbell’s soup cans, it didn’t take long
for The Norfolk Hotel to become the pub
of choice for Sydney’s artfully dishevelled
hipster crowd.
On weekends, the beer garden is
packed with fashion denizens sharing
jugs of beer, soft-shell tacos and tequila
Stitch features top cocktails
by mixologist and co-owner
Christophe Lehoux
BOTTOM: The welcoming
interior of The Norfolk Hotel
slammers. While they ditched the poker
machines, co-owners James Miller
(Ruby L’otel) and Jamie Wirth (Flinders
Hotel and Duke Bistro) have retained
the essence of the gritty pub. It’s been
glammed up with new furniture, and
attracts Aussie actors like Brendan Cowell
and Emma Lung, but old-timers still
patronise the bar. And Wirth says they
are more than welcome.
He says: “We love that mix: a 50-yearold
couple drinking wine, an old dude in
the sports bar watching TV, and people
outside drinking and eating tacos.”
RIDING
THE WAVES
OF ENLIGHTENMENT
At Bali’s famed Surf Goddess Retreat, surfi ng, yoga,
gourmet cuisine and laughter are all part of the
one-week plan to transform you into a surf goddess
WORDS SAMANTHA COOMBER
The Surf Goddess Retreat (SGR)
website reveals that a surf
goddess, among other things,
“Smiles with her eyes, laughs
from her belly, appreciates life’s simple
joys and loves the ocean!” Hey, that’s me,
I thought.
My initiation as a surf goddess starts
when I and 10 other females from the
US, Netherlands, Australia and the UK,
arrive at Bali’s acclaimed SGR fi lled
with delicious expectations — and
apprehension — for our seven days ahead.
Concierge, chef extraordinaire and
“mother hen”, Joyce, shows us round our
new home. We might be here for surfi ng
and yoga, but we’re ecstatic to discover
this retreat is far from being a surfer’s
budget hang-out or detox “boot camp”.
“We’ve created a pampering space
fi t for a goddess, a luxurious surf retreat
for a special way to learn to surf,” says
SGR founder Chelsea Huntley.
SGR’s colonial-style villa refl ects
Bali’s relaxed lifestyle, reinforced with
a generous-sized pool and door signs
046
proclaiming “Gone to the beach”. As
an all-female retreat, fanciful feminine
touches include custom-blended spa
products and scented candles. A blissfully
peaceful oasis, Villa Serena actually lies
in the heart of Seminyak, Bali’s trendiest
enclave, with stylish shops, bars and
restaurants right on our doorstep.
Our fi rst-night orientation session
resembles a girl-power party, with
supreme surf goddess herself, Chelsea,
and surf goddess guides (SGG) Jade, Joyce
and Melinda greeting us with frangipani
garlands, beaming smiles and whoops
of delight. We nervously introduce
ourselves. Our group is typical of SGR
guests: professional women aged 22 to 49,
predominantly solo travellers. While all
here for personal reasons, we all want to
learn to surf. Turning 40, Jude wants to
try something new every month this year,
while Jennifer is here because “there’s not
much opportunity to surf in Memphis.”
The seven-day SGR program is a
balance of surf, yoga, healthy cuisine
and pampering — but surfi ng is pivotal.
Chelsea originally devised it with the
belief that “surfi ng is more than a sport,
it’s a state of mind and way of being.
When women surf we can empower
ourselves and grow confi dent.”
Retreat schedules are designed around
the tides, hence breakfasts, like our fi rst
one, often start at 6.30am. But even at

When the surf’s up,
it’s time to head for
the beach where fun is
the order of the day
MY JOURNEY //
MY JOURNEY
048
this ungodly hour, infectious laughter
rings out, and Joyce makes things easier,
providing treats fi t for goddesses, like
ginger and banana pancakes drenched in
Borneo jungle honey. Fuelled-up for the
day, our magnifi cent posse of 11 is shuttled
to nearby Rip Curl School of Surf on
Legian Beach. I feel like a child on her fi rst
day of school again.
Clad in sky-blue rash vests emblazoned
with “surf goddess”
(just so everyone
knows), we re-group on
the beach. Conditions
are perfect: gloriously
sunny, manageable
waves, sandy-bottomed
warm seas. Our tailormade
Rip Curl surf
program teaches us
basics — water safety,
board handling,
paddling techniques
and turning — and
enough skills for surfi ng independently.
“My goal was to stand-up by the week’s
end,” confesses Jennifer, but she, along
with everyone else, achieved it on day one.
To soothe our sore limbs, we are
whisked off to Seminyak’s Prana Spa,
a decadent Moroccan and Rajasthaniinfl
uenced sanctuary. My lavish “Goddess
Glow” treatment is custom-designed for
surf goddesses. “It’s hard work being
a surf goddess!” laughs Lara after two
hours of pampering.
“A welcoming
and nurturing
retreat where
you don’t have
to think of
anything”
Next up, daily yoga in the garden
pavillion. There are audibly louder groans
as the week progresses with increasingly
diffi cult yoga stances. Several of us have
fallen by the wayside by week’s end.
Days roll into a carefree haze of surf,
pampering, yoga and
amazing dinners
— a true highlight
because of the witty
conversations with
fellow diners. On the
fi nal evening, we scrub
up for sunset cocktails
at very hip Ku De Ta.
Upon our farewell,
we are given a group
surf DVD and get
to keep our tote bag
and rash vest. But we
walk away with so much more. “It’s a
welcoming and nurturing retreat where
you don’t have to think about anything,
which opens up your mind,” says Lara.
If I wasn’t a fully-fl edged surf goddess
before, I certainly am now!
MY EPIPHANY
I found my fellow surf
goddesses insightful,
inspirational, extraordinary and
riotously funny. Although I had
a brief surf lesson a few years
back, I had a fear of moving on
to the next surfi ng level and
dealing with those big crashing
waves further out. Surrounded
by novices and individually
coached, I accomplished both.
I learnt all the basic surf
moves and techniques and,
amazingly, I’ll be able to surf
by myself next time. Sure, I
wasn’t as profi cient as some,
but as the oldest of the group,
I felt I accomplished more than
enough. As Chelsea says, “It’s
all about personal goals.”
Cooking, a comfortable retreat
and spa treats are part and
parcel of being a surf goddess

A TASTE OF
TROPICANA
A party is brewing south of Cairns, as Port Douglas
prepares to launch into its annual Carnivale
WORDS WENDY DUNLOP
Port Douglas is a destination
for all seasons, but there’s no
better reason for a visit than
the annual May Carnivale.
Revitalised by tourism in the
1990s, Port Douglas residents designed
a fi esta around their local regatta, and
have been partying bigger and better ever
since. So pack your funkiest fi nery and
fi nd out how a little town of 4,000 hosts
20,000 participants in one of Northern
Queensland’s best festivals.
The event manager of Port Douglas’
Carnivale, Martine Cotton, believes
the festival has grown for a number of
reasons. “The Douglas region has a highly
developed spirit of community, recognises
the benefi ts of celebrating our way of life,
and encourages visitors to be part of this
celebration,” she says.
Indeed, the 10-day extravaganza from
19–29 May is crammed with activities
that have broad appeal, and create an
atmosphere of inclusiveness and fun.
Donna Anderson of Events NQ, who
produces privately owned events within
the Carnivale program, says: “For our
Food Wine & A Taste of Port event, half
the guests are local, and the rest are from
other parts of Australia or from overseas.
Over 50% are repeat visitors, so we must
be doing something right.”
Blended like a good perfume,
Carnivale’s regular highlights — the
founding Exemplar Clipper Cup event,
the signature Sheraton Mirage Longest
Lunch, a popular street parade, and the
Taste of Port — vie for attention alongside
Four Mile Beach Day, Carnivale Song
Writer Challenge, Wildlife Habitat Day,
market days, free concerts and even a
comedy club. Macrossan Street Parade
is the event locals associate most with
Carnivale, attracting up to 10,000
people. The community suggests the
parade’s theme each year, and for 2011
“Wonderland” was submitted by Jo’el
Collinson, a dynamic young hairdresser
from Mossman, who designs an amazing
fl oat every year. “‘Wonderland sums
up the region — a wonderland of reef,
rainforest, fresh local produce and artistic
residents,” says Cotton.
With a gastronomic bounty from sea,
land and a tropical climate, it’s no wonder
the food chain gets plenty of attention —
there’s the eight-course degustation menu
at Palates of Port, chefs competing for the
title of “Port’s Best” and the inaugural
Wharf Street Food Fair.

SOMETHING
SPECIAL IN
MY BACKYARD
Meet the inspirational Aussies putting the
feel-good factor back into the community
WORDS KELLY IRVING

LIFE IS SWEET
When Melburnians Vanessa Kwiatkowski and
Mat Lumalasi got some backyard bees, they
realised they had a higher purpose.
“Rooftop beekeeping has been going on
for years in European cities, so I thought,
let’s make it happen here,” Kwiatkowski
says of Rooftop Honey, “an almost crazy
idea” that won a AU$1,000 grant from the
Awesome Foundation last year.
It has a list of 20 (but a waitlist of
over 80) businesses, restaurants and
individuals that provide roof space in
exchange for honey (“honey sharing”).
Some spots include La Luna Bistro,
Carlton and Roller Door Organic Café.
“Site-to-site makes a huge diff erence in
the taste, smell and colour of the honey,”
says Lumalasi. “It’s exciting, because each
restaurant gets their own unique fl avour
of honey depending on what trees are
around and they use it in their food.”
Lumalasi, a part-time swarm collector,
rescues the bees, re-homes them and
keeps them free from disease. It aids the
survival of the honey bee, which is at risk
in most parts of the world. “It’s been great
meeting wonderful people, but it’s also
good to see others’ interest in our future.”
A DREAM COME TRUE
“Aboriginal culture is a very special thing,”
says Tony O’Connor of Kookaburra Tours
and Charters, who was born and bred in
Townsville, Far North Queensland.
“We’re talking about the oldest surviving
culture on earth,” he says. He started the
Dreamtime Journey Tour in 2004 to help
sustain the Indigenous community. Each
tour is a unique experience that explores
fi ve cultural groups over two or four days,
with a local representative from each
explaining their heritage.
“People think that Aboriginal culture is
the same across the country, but that’s like
saying everyone in Europe is the same.”
A one-man show with a group of
drivers, O’Connor has won numerous
tourism awards. His unique itinerary
includes Indigenous and non-Indigenous
accommodations, like the Mungalla
Station homestead, Noorla Heritage
Resort, and Hidden Valley Cabins,
Australia’s fi rst carbon-neutral resort
(100% solar powered), and one of the
best spots to see a platypus. “You’ll learn
about bush tucker and medicine, play the
didgeridoo or throw the boomerang.”
O’Connor aims to get more Indigenous
faces into tourism and hospitality, so as to
“learn from one other”.
“It’s exciting because each restaurant
gets their own unique flavour of honey”
“We’re talking about
the oldest surviving
culture on earth”
PICTURE PERFECT
Award-winning fi lmmaker Allanah Zitersman
fell in love with Dungog in the Hunter Valley.
“This place represents everything that
is Australian,” says Zitersman, festival
director of the Dungog Film Festival. The
lovely town has the oldest continuously
running cinema, the James Theatre, and
sits at the foothills of the World Heritage
Barrington Tops National Park. “There
have been some terrifi c festivals in
regional towns overseas, like Sundance
and Cannes, so why not here?”
The four-day, four-year-old event is
the world’s biggest festival of Aussie
fi lms, and has gained huge community
support. It helps facilitate fi lm industry
connections, and previous attendees
include Bruce Beresford and Pia Miranda.
“Getting attention in a market saturated
with American fi lms and big budgets is
tough. Here, the VIPs aren’t in some room
where you can’t access them; they’re on
the street talking to you.” With world
premieres, gala events, skill development
classes, parties and parades, Zitersman
says: “Come, let go and have a ball!”
DRINK IT UP
Sustainability practitioner Dan Atkins catches
up with like-minded people at a philanthropic
event he pioneered with three friends called
Sustainability Drinks Australia.
“We thought it would be a fun way
to connect people together, and bring
sustainability to the mainstream: a
diverse range of people with a variety of
expertise and passions.”
The fi rst free monthly event started in
Melbourne in 2007 with 10 people. It now
also runs in Adelaide, Sydney and Darwin
with 150 people attending each time.
To ensure that people mingle with
the right intentions, company names
are omitted from name badges. Instead,
it’s a warm environment where people
network, catch up on news, win door
prizes and listen to inspirational speakers.
Presenters have included Marcus
Godinho, CEO of FareShare, an
organisation that rescues food from landfi ll
and turns it into nutritious meals for the
homeless, and Sean Willmore, a Victorian
park ranger and director of The Thin Green
Line, a foundation supporting families of
rangers killed during conservation work.
“There are so many humble leaders out
there. We’re giving them the chance to
share their exciting story,” Atkins says.
“I’ve been blown away by the passion and
the enthusiasm of everyone.”
FEEL-GOOD FOOD
Hannah Colman and Jess Moran became
friends while working in a restaurant at a
community organisation in Melbourne. Here,
they met young migrants, international
students and refugees who couldn’t get jobs
because they had no experience, so Colman
and Moran knitted up an idea to help them.
In August last year, they launched
Scarf , a hospitality-training
organisation off ering anyone facing
barriers to employment “a pretty
intense sense of what it’s like to work in
a real restaurant”.
Every Monday night during the
10-week program, trainees get hands-on
experience serving actual customers in a
high-quality establishment, like New York
Tomato in Richmond and Bistro Flor in
Carlton North. “They come to your table,
pour your wine, take your order and talk
you through the menu,” Colman says. “It’s
a dining experience with a diff erence.”
Guided by hospitality professionals
who volunteer as mentors, trainees get
invaluable connections and confi dence.
Last year, fi ve out of six trainees got
employed. “One of them was Sam, who
had been trying to fi nd work for a year. He
was so fantastic he got a job at Libby Reid
Catering (one of Melbourne’s best catering
companies), so now he’s earning more
than all of us!”
Warm, sheltered bays
with beautiful blue waters
and almost-guaranteed
sightings of dolphins
or migrating whales —
what’s not to love about
sunny Port Stephens?
WORDS SHERIDEN RHODES
It’s the place I saw my very fi rst
dolphin, playing off the bow of a
ferry as we chugged around Nelson
Bay. Later, we fed the pelicans, had
golden fi sh and chips wrapped
in newspaper, and relaxed by the
water’s edge. Three decades on, you
can still do all life’s simple things that
continue to make Port Stephens special.
Generations of Australians have been
visiting the region, located two-and-a-half
hours north of Sydney, or a 30-minute
drive from Newcastle’s Williamtown
Airport. They come for its natural beauty,
abundant wildlife, oysters by the bay,
pristine beaches and coastline, and
crystal-clear waters home to dolphins and
whales. If you’re with your family, there
are scores of holiday houses, apartments
and family resorts such as Oaks Pacifi c
Blue at Salamander Bay that’s guaranteed
to please with its 500m² lagoon
swimming pool — one of the biggest hotel
pools in the southern hemisphere. Max it
out by booking a swim-out room.
The Azure Restaurant on-site is a
good option for a relaxed meal, but while
you’re in the area, don’t miss the iconic
Bub’s Fish & Chips at Nelson Bay, home
to some of the freshest fi sh and chips in
the state, with seafood delivered straight
from the trawler to their door daily. Order
the grilled fi sh and chips, add a squeeze of
lemon and take in the terrifi c views over
Nelson Bay from the deck.
We’re up early the next morning for a
Dolphin Watch cruise by Moonshadow
Cruises departing from Nelson Marina.
Within moments of departing on the
two-hour cruise, the captain spots
dolphins. It’s thrilling to watch up to six
dolphins chasing the boat; a sight that
even our experienced captain says is rare.
On the return leg, we cool off by sitting in
the huge boom net, which is lowered into
the water at the stern. Inside, passengers
relax watching the dolphins via the
underwater video camera.
DOLPHINS PHOTO: SHERIDEN RHODES
There are countless ways to see
dolphins at Port Stephens, the dolphin
capital of Australia. For a low-cost option,
hop onboard one of the traditional
timber ferries that ply the waterways
between Nelson Bay and Tea Gardens.
A Port Stephens Ferry trip takes in the
history of the Myall River, Winda Woppa
and beautiful Port Stephens Harbour,
allowing passengers to spot resident
bottlenose dolphins.
At the other end of the spectrum, a new
wild dolphin encounter (an Australian
fi rst) takes humans as close as possible to
swimming with dolphins. Begun last year,
the Dolphin Swim Australia experience
sees four swimmers wearing wetsuits,
snorkel gear and a safety harness enter
the water while attached to a cable
between the twin bows of the catamaran,
Imagine, as it sails along at a safe 5km/h.
“This is a unique experience that lets
you keep up with the friendly common
dolphins that get very excited when they
see humans in the water whom they think
are ‘swimming’ as fast as them,” says tour
co-founder Andrew Parker. “It takes you
right into the dolphins’ world where you
can hear and feel their vocalisations.”
Later, we take a cooling dip in the
emerald waters of Shoal Bay, before
heading for the Inner Light Tea Rooms
on Nelson Head — where a blackboard
menu of hamburgers, chicken sandwiches
and milkshakes in aluminium containers
awaits, along with 180-degree views over
Nelson Bay and Shoal Bay.
If you prefer adrenaline, Port Stephens
off ers some blood-pumping options.
Try the new Wave Jumper ride with
Thundaraft in Nelson Bay: the 8.5m rigid
infl atable boat is the same raft used by
Australia’s military and police forces. Port
FROM TOP: Cool the kids down with
a boom net dip; duning fun; meet
the friendly locals
“The
friendly
dolphins get
very excited
seeing humans
swimming”
Stephens’ huge sand dunes at Stockton
Beach will also unleash your inner child.
With 26km of dunes stretching almost all
the way to Newcastle, with some soaring
30m high, it’s the largest sand mass of its
type in the southern hemisphere. A Port
Stephens 4WD’s sandboarding tour will
have you whooping, as you rollercoaster
your way out to the dunes in a 4WD —
before fl ying downhill on a sandboard.
IN
THE RING
With crazy costumes, high jinks and laughing crowds, Osaka wrestling is like no other
WORDS MANAMI OKAZAKI
PHOTOGRAPHY BANRI
Osaka pro-wrestling is a
phenomenon that captivates the
locals and continues to grow in
popularity. Don’t go with any
expectations though, because it’s nothing
like anything you’ve ever seen before.
Osaka wrestling consists of various
mock-combat techniques and moves, but
the wrestlers are very agile and perform
aerial movements — fl ying high through
the air and catapulting themselves onto
the ropes (and often into the audience).
Osaka wrestling is a battle of goodversus-evil,
the comical and the serious,
with the wrestlers falling into one of these
categories. Usually the characters are
infl uenced by iconic Osaka characters
or fi gures in popular culture, such as
Tiger Mask, who gets his name from the
Hanshin Tigers local baseball team and
the popular Japanese manga.
One of the most popular wrestlers,
Kuishinbo Kamen, comes onstage
throwing out lollies. He explains: “Osaka
wrestling is for the family. I come on to
stage in this funny costume and give out
sweets,” he says. “There’s a lot of crowd
interaction and it’s in close proximity to
the audience. It’s enjoyable for the whole
family so it’s accessible. I’ve got a small
physique, so I base my style on that with
fl ying moves, and my character doesn’t
talk. Humour is really important for
Osaka wrestling — it’s part of the Osaka

Osaka’s wrestlers come
in many guises and
appearances — but
all of them are out
to make you laugh
psyche taken from Yoshimoto culture. It’s
pro-wrestling based on laughter.”
This slapstick-style of humour is
integral to the Osaka culture. The city
is famous for its comedians such as
those in rakugo, the traditional art of
comedic storytelling, and manzai, a type
of stand-up comedy. Yoshimoto Kyogo,
a major entertainment conglomerate
based in Osaka, employs most of Japan’s
comedians, and all the wrestlers cite
Yoshimoto as pivotal in creating the
culture of wrestling.
For the locals, to be funny is one of the
most likable traits in a person. “Osaka
pro-wrestling expresses life, it’s not about
winning or losing,” says Tiger Mask,
who is one of the villains. “It’s extremely
important to have humour, but the most
crucial thing in wrestling is to evoke
emotions and for it to be a fi ght.”
Having said that, when interviewing
Tiger Mask, it’s hard to tell what’s
humour and what’s reality. He tells
us that in order to train, he has to kick
sandbags fi lled with glass, and take falls
on an electrifi ed mat.
Wrestling fi rst became popular in
Japan in 1953, when Rikidozan, a sumo
wrestler, started the Japan Pro Wrestling
Alliance. Osaka wrestling started in
1989, taking its cues from Mexico’s
family-oriented, absurdity-fi lled lucha
libre, rather than the more aggressive
pro-wrestling of Rikidozan’s lineage. And
while Osaka pro-wrestling is supremely
kitsch, the moves are harmonious and the
entertainers, highly dramatic showmen.
One of the more serious characters,
Skywalker Kotougi, explains how he
began wrestling after seeing a match
066
TOP/BOTTOM: Keeping
the audience happy
and entertained is
the common goal of
Osaka’s pro-wrestlers;
an Osaka wrestling
match features
exciting acrobatics
when in junior high school. “Everyone
looked really good, they had sculpted
bodies and idol qualities about them.
Osaka wrestling was a kind of salvation
for me,” he says. “I called and asked if I
could be a pro-wrestler, and was told to
come in for a test. It took about a year to
be pro; it was really tough. I was waking
up at 6am, practising until past noon. It
was a lifestyle with only men, cooking
and cleaning the dormitory — for a year.”
Like most Osaka pro wrestlers,
Kotougi is self-managed. His week
consists of matches six days a week, gym
training and even advertising of matches.
Watching a match, it’s impossible not
to laugh. By the time it’s in full swing,
the crowd is totally besotted, shouting
and screaming in encouragement.
Kamen sums it up: “The main thing is
to entertain the audience, to make them
laugh and to be happy,” he says.
Anniki, in Cullen Bay
take you away

ADRENALINE
Some like it at a drenching
breakneck speed, others
a gentle meander. Everyone
has their own idea of what
constitutes a good time
on the water. No matter
what the pace or style, riding the waters
of magnifi cent Darwin Harbour is
an absolute must for visitors to
Australia’s northernmost capital city —
and there are choices galore to keep
everyone exhilarated.
SUNSETS AND PEARLS
Australian Harbour Cruises’
beautifully restored 1950s pearling
lugger, Anniki, tugs impatiently at
her mooring lines in Cullen Bay Marina,
her iceboxes fi lled with champagne and
hearty nibbles for the passengers now
boarding for four hours of bliss on her
popular Darwin Harbour sunset cruise.
In her past life, Anniki worked the
tropical waters of Torres Strait in
Queensland, collecting lustrous pearl
shell to be made into buttons for the
European markets. Today, this showpiece
of north Australian maritime history
earns her keep as one of the most soughtafter
boats for cruising on Darwin waters.
She also performs more famous duties
from time to time — she proudly carried
the Olympic fl ame from Horn Island to
Thursday Island in the lead-up to the
Sydney Olympics and more recently was
hand-picked by Baz Luhrmann to star in
his epic fi lm, Australia.
In keeping with this classic lugger’s
original purpose, owner/skipper Grant
Rubock shares intriguing stories of both
bygone and modern pearling days, and
has collected historical relics to keep as
props and conversation pieces.
Anniki cruises depart daily, from May
to October, from Cullen Bay Marina.
If you’re both serious about wine,
someone else should be driving. Book
with Fine Wine Tours and owner Phil
Parker, a wine writer and author of The
Mad Keen Wine Buff ’s Road Trip, will
provide commentary and insider access.
The Soljans Estate, the third-oldest
in New Zealand, could be one of
your stops. Family-owned for three
generations, the winery-café is a fantastic
option for a light lunch.
Drop into award-winning West Brook
Winery and if you bump into ownerwinemaker
Anthony Ivicevich on the
beautiful cellar door premises, you’ll
be caught up in his passion. He says:
“We believe in making premium wines
at the best quality we can, rather than
compete with other wines based on price.”
You’ll be able to taste wines made from
Marlborough fruit but why not go for the
Waimauku wines made on the estate?
Continuing on the theme of grapes,
Your visit might be
timed to bite into
a just-harvested
apple or pear
Spa Di Vine is in a purpose-built country
manor a three-minute drive from the
Cottages. Owner Paula Haverkate off ers
a range of grape-inspired treatments
ranging from vine therapy facials to
body treatments. There are three couple
packages, starting with a two-hour His
and Hers Escape (NZ$320) where he can
have a body massage and she can have a
customised facial, inclusive of face, neck
and shoulder massage.
Grapes are not the only fruit you’ll fi nd
here; check out the family-owned Boric
Orchards. Your visit might be timed to
bite into a just-harvested apple or pear.
CLOCKWISE FROM LEFT:
A knowledgeable and
friendly welcome at
door; carve a path on
Muriwai Beach with your
PUMP IT UP
Get your adrenaline
fl owing with a quadbike
ride over uneven
forest trails with 4 Track
Adventures’ guide Mike
Bond. There are also
tandem bikes available
and we recommend the
two-hour quad safari
(NZ$236), which stops
at a secluded stretch of
Muriwai Beach where you
can roll down a steep
sand dune and splash
through large puddles.
Mountain-biking
enthusiasts can hire
a bike at Woodhill
Mountain Bike Park and
attempt anything from
HUB //
the 6km beginner Nature
Valley course to the 20km
There are currently 68
trails to choose from and
ricotta and feta, available September to
BRAIN TEASER
SUDOKU
Grab a pencil, put on your thinking cap and join the craze!
INSTRUCTIONS
The objective of Sudoku is to fi ll in the missing squares
so that each row, column and 3x3 box contains the
numbers 1 through to 9. To get you started, here are a
few tactics...
Scan each horizontal and vertical band consisting
of three 3x3 boxes. It’s often easiest to start in a spot
with the most numbers already given. If you can fi nd the
same number in two rows, you know that number must
be in the third (the same goes for columns). Now see
which intersecting rows and columns can be eliminated
because they also contain that number. (This method is
called slicing and dicing.)
Some Sudoku fans like to pencil in possible answers
in the corners of individual squares. Once you have a
few numbers fi lled in, you may also fi nd it handy to jot
down a list of missing numbers for each row, column
and box.
OSCAR
During my recent holiday with my family, I went
to New Zealand. I went on the Shotover Jetboat,
Zipline Ecotour, luge, helicopter, Fox River
and caves, Franz Joseph Glacier, a boat called
Milford Wanderer and a bungy jump. All this
stuff was mostly in Queenstown. My favourite
things were the luge, Shotover Jetboat and
the chopper. The luge was fun, because on the
steep bits, I did mini-jumps. The Shotover did
lots of 360-degree turns. I’m going to make a
necklace from my dress pennies, including an
AJ Hackett logo! I had such an awesome time.
Thank you, Jetstar!
Thornbury, Victoria
JOSHUA
We fl ew with Jetstar to Cairns (I had not fl own
since I was three). We hired a small yellow
car and drove to Port Douglas. We visited the
Daintree Rainforest, Cape Tribulation, Cairns
Saw Tea plantations and went to the Great
Barrier Reef. The fl ight was great, I loved it.
We stayed in an apartment for seven days. My
favourite place was the reef. We snorkelled all
day, even mum! We saw loads of fi sh and coral,
and had a great lunch. Port Douglas was nice
too. We ate, walked, swam. On Sunday, there
was a market. I liked everything. IT WAS GREAT!
I can’t wait to go again!
Newcastle, New South Wales
PHOEBE
I fl ew to Bali with my family. It was the fi rst
time overseas for my brothers and I. We had
an awesome time. We visited the monkey
forest, the volcano, the rice fi elds, the Bali
Safari Park and did some shopping. We bought
lots of things to take to an orphanage. We
loved visiting the children there, and they
loved the gifts we took. I loved getting my hair
braided. My brothers and I got a photo with an
orangutan! And a baby tiger! We enjoyed going
out for breakfast, lunch and dinner too. We
loved Waterbom Park so much, we went twice.
I really enjoyed my holiday — thanks mum and
dad! Thanks, Jetstar.
n the bustling tourist hub
I
of Pattaya City, there are
pockets of great poverty.
Grandmother Noi migrated
here seven years ago in the
hope of fi nding work. She
had in her care three young
grandchildren, abandoned by their parents,
whom she had to support.
“I’m the grandmother of Ann, Bua and
Maew. But they all call me mother because I’ve
raised them since they were babies,” says Noi.
“When I arrived at Pattaya, it wasn’t heaven, as
I expected.”
Noi couldn’t fi nd work or a place for her
and her grandchildren to live. She set up a
makeshift tarpaulin home by the rubbish dump,
collecting recyclables to sell so that she could
feed the children. “I rented an old pulling cart
to collect garbage. Where we lived was a rubber
sheet. When it rained, we couldn’t stay as it
was all wet. It was very diffi cult, especially
living with a baby,” recalls Noi. She couldn’t
afford to send them to school and it looked like
they’d end up roaming the streets, like so many
other children in Pattaya.
Luckily, someone from Noi’s church knew
of her situation and contacted Sudjai Nakpien,
coordinator of the Quality of Life Development
of Street Children, a World Vision project in
Pattaya. The Quality of Life project provides
assistance and protection from exploitation for
children affected by family problems.
Building on community and government
support networks, the project helps street
children gain access to education and runs
programs to address the dangers children face
living on the streets, such as sexual exploitation
The Right
to Dream
A World
Vision project
in Thailand is
giving hope to
street children
emergency referrals for children
in dangerous situations.
The Quality of Life project
coordinator, Sudjai — whom
Noi’s grandchildren call
“Teacher” — began by looking
for a place for Noi and the
children to live. Noi now rents a piece of land,
on which she has built a small house. When
Sudjai fi rst met the children seven years ago
they were malnourished, had decayed teeth,
were dirty and in poor health due to a lack of
clean water. The Quality of Life project staff
arranged for the children to attend the project’s
children’s centre, where they received food and
healthcare and had a chance to play and learn.
All the children now attend school. Grandma
Noi says that without World Vision’s help, “the
children would never have a chance to study”.
The oldest of Noi’s grandchildren, Ann, 13,
recalls the help she received from project staff.
“When I was scalded by hot water, Teacher
(Sudjai) took me to see the doctor,” she says. “I
was [also] bitten by a dog at 11 o’clock at night.
I called Teacher and she came to me.”
While World Vision workers such as Sudjai
work tirelessly to keep children safe, off the
streets and in the education system, they face
enormous hurdles. The number of children
exploited in Pattaya is rising. Traffi ckers, with
seemingly limitless resources, smuggle children
to Pattaya to work in the sex industry. Children
who have been brought up to have little hope
for their future sometimes turn to glue-sniffi ng
for escape, and children living on the streets
are easy targets for traffi ckers.
Despite this, children like Ann provide hope.
“I want to be a Thai language teacher and teach
underprivileged children,” she smiles.
With StarKids’ help, World Vision staff are
tackling the needs of Pattaya’s street children.
Some children, like Ann, need all the basics,
others need something less tangible, like hope.
BEST IDEA FOR A FAMILY OUTING: If
you’re an early riser and love the water,
the Sigatoka River Safari is fantastic. It’s a
combination of a jet boat ride up the river and
a cultural experience at a local village, or a
half-day cruise with Captain Cook Cruises. Think
snorkelling, a barbecue lunch and a great relaxing
day on the beach — the whole family will love it.
MOST ROMANTIC SPOT: A hot-air balloon
ride over the Nausori Highlands at sunrise.
GREAT PLACE FOR DINNER: I absolutely
love Salt Restaurant at the Sofi tel. Not
only is the food fantastic, it also has a great
setting by the sea. I often dine there on my day
off with my husband.
BEST PLACE TO PARTY WITH THE GANG:
Ice bar in Martintar is a new favourite with
the locals. Pool tables, good music and a great
bar selection are the perfect ingredients for a fun
night out.
MUST-BUY GIFTS: Pure Fiji products.
There are gorgeous candles, room
fragrances, oils and body lotions all made right
here in Fiji. There’s a concept store at the Sofi tel
Fiji, so if you’re staying on Denarau I recommend
you check it out.
BEST IDEA FOR A FAMILY OUTING:
Tsutenkaku, which means “tower reaching
stands at 103m tall.
MOST ROMANTIC SPOT: The Kaiyukan
Aquarium is one of the largest aquariums
in the world. The aquarium exhibits numerous
fi sh, plants, invertebrate animals, batrachians,
reptiles, birds and mammals. The interior makes
you feel like you’re walking in an underwater
world, which is very romantic.
BEST BREAKFAST: The 24th fl oor of the
Imperial Hotel, Osaka. The breakfast is
healthy and balanced with items such as grilled
fi sh, steamed fi sh and salad.
GREAT PLACE FOR DINNER: I recommend
West Umeda, a bustling district in Osaka.
There’s a building there called Breeze Breeze
Tower. It’s 33 storeys high which offers a great
view of the city and houses many restaurants.
BEST NIGHT OUT: Minami is a fantastic
entertainment district in Osaka. Go there
to shop, dine, drink and dance, to take in a show
or just to enjoy the vibrant atmosphere. It’s open
until the wee hours of the morning. You’re sure to
MOST UNUSUAL THING TO DO: Stay at
one of Tokyo’s themed hotels —
sometimes known as “love hotels”. These hotels
are usually very new and very clean, have every
amenity and are also reasonably priced. They are
found close to every major train station in Tokyo,
but Shibuya and Ikebukuro are well-known for
some of the best.
BEST IDEA FOR A FAMILY OUTING: If you
do end up on a side trip to Nagano,
visiting the snow monkeys of Hell Valley makes
for a great family outing. There are two clans of
macaque monkeys that live side by side in some
degree of harmony, but these two groups do vie
to use the natural hot spring baths. But don’t
worry about getting attacked or ransacked for
food by dirty little primates — they’re
well-behaved and well-bathed!
FOR HISTORY: Even though there are
many famous Buddhist temples in Tokyo,
none compares in grandeur or historic
signifi cance to the Zenko-ji temple in Nagano city.
This temple has housed the fi rst image of Buddha
that was brought from India, and presented as a
Queenstown Bike Festival
MOST ROMANTIC SPOT: On a chairlift on
Coronet Peak on a frosty morning — with
the sun rising over the horizon and the clouds
fl oating in the valley below.
INSIDER’S TIP: Fly — by helicopter or fi xed
wing. It’s the best way to see this region.
UNUSUAL FACT: The lake rises and falls
about 12cm every fi ve minutes. Legend
has it that a giant’s heart is impossible to
destroy, and causes this rise and fall,
while science says it is due to fl uctuating
atmospheric pressures.
BEST BREAKFAST: After a ride to the top
of the Crown Range on Saturday morning,
stop at the Lost Café in Arrowtown. Try the museli
or the scrambled eggs with great coffee.
GREAT PLACE FOR DINNER: Saffron in
Arrowtown has great food that refl ects
chef-patron Peter Gawron’s ongoing culinary
journeys of discovery. It features food from
central Otago, as well as great wines.
FAVOURITE SIDE TRIP WITHIN NEW
GREAT PLACE FOR DINNER: For
absolute beachfront dining, I can
never resist Sails on Main Beach. Relaxed
by day and sophisticated by night, Sails
uses fresh ingredients to create the ultimate
seafood experience.
BEST PLACE TO PARTY WITH THE
GANG: Tucked away upstairs in Bay
Village in the heart of Hastings Street, the
Rolling Rock attracts people from far and
wide. It’s said that Prince William and U2
have partied here.
MUST-EAT: Cookie dough ice cream
from New Zealand Natural Ice Cream
on Hastings Street.
FAVOURITE SIDE TRIP WITHIN
AUSTRALIA: If you’re looking to add
a bit of glitz to your escape, jump in the car
and head down to Mooloolaba, about 30km
south of Noosa, which is fi lled with
high-rises, restaurants, bars and nightclubs.
AUSTRALIAN FOCUS
TOP/BOTTOM: Yes, you can
surf on the Sunshine Coast;
head down to Noosa National
Park to enjoy nature
MUST-BUY (MONEY NO OBJECT!): A
painting from Honey Ant Gallery on
Hastings Street. Here, you’ll fi nd a superb
hand-picked range of paintings by talented
Aboriginal artists.
INSIDER’S TIP: Held every
Wednesday and Saturday, the
Eumundi Markets is the best place to shop
if you’re looking for something handmade
or different.
BEST PLACE TO HANG OUT WITH
THE LOCALS: With views of Noosa
National Park and Main Beach, Noosa
Heads Surf Club is a hot favourite. Enjoy a
view of one of Australia’s most famous surf
beaches along with all the locals.
BEST IDEA FOR A FAMILY OUTING: A
BEST BREAKFAST: Undoubtedly
Estabar on Newcastle Beach. Their
porridge with almonds and fruit is the best
way to start the day, the service is friendly
and the views are magic.
GREAT PLACE FOR DINNER: East End
Enoteca is one of my favourites. It’s
an intimate wine bar with a fabulous range
of wines, where making a decision on what
to eat is always hard — everything is great!
INSIDER’S TIP: One of the best-kept
secrets of Newcastle is AKK Asian
Grocer on Hunter Street. Three times a
week, you can order in Peking duck,
pancakes and all the fi xings —this makes
for a delicious and easy dinner.
LOCAL DELICACY: Hunter Valley
semillon, without a doubt! Fish and
chips on the beach takes on a whole new
meaning with a bottle of Hunter semillon.
FAVOURITE LOCAL FESTIVAL: The
Hunter Valley Wine and Food Month
in June is a month-long celebration of the
wine and food of our fabulous Hunter
region. No matter what kind of wine and
food experience you’re looking for, there’s
an event to suit you.
BEST IDEA FOR A FAMILY OUTING:
The Fernleigh track is a great family
outing. It’s an old deserted train line that
has been converted into a leafy,
recreational pathway for cyclists and
walkers — it makes for a great, easy outing.
GREAT PLACE FOR DINNER: My own
restaurant Out of Africa, in Manly
on Sydney’s Northern Beaches, where you
can come along, indulge your senses, and
be treated to a unique and exotic dining
experience. I also run Moroccan cooking
classes at the restaurant each month,
where you can learn all the tips and tricks to
cooking Moroccan.
BEST NIGHT OUT: For a great night
out in Sydney, The Ivy is a sure thing.
Located right in the heart of Sydney’s CBD,
it’s not just a bar — it’s a complex!
Whatever you love in a night out, it’s all
there: luxurious cocktail lounges, a classic
pub, restaurants, pizza at the bar or by the
swimming pool, outdoor courtyard bar, and
levels and rooms of all different themes.
BEST IDEA FOR A FAMILY OUTING: A
must-visit is Taronga Zoo. Make the
trip by ferry from Circular Quay to Taronga.
The zoo is remarkable; you and your kids
will see every animal you can think of!
