To paraphrase Mr. Lincoln-the community will little note, nor long 

remember what we say here, but it can never forget what we have done here- 

Never, during the seven years of its existence has the Leedom Estates Civic 

Association lost sight of its original aims and ideals as expressed in our first 

directory published in 1944. 

"The program of the Civic Association has been designed to improve 

the value of your property, to make Leedom Estates one of the outstanding 

communities in Delaware County and to give to all residents, whether owners 

or tenants, every advantage in education, health and recreation." 

We have consistently sponsored and carried through to a successful conclusion 

many community improvements. During the past year this Association, 

in conjunction with other civic groups, was instrumental in blocking the 

erection of row houses in the Township-thereby preserving our suburban 

atmosphere and keeping property values at high level. The directional signs 

recently erected on Rodney Road were placed there at the request of this Association, 

and through our efforts a storm sewer is in the process of being 

installed at the rear of Darby Road through the Park area. 

We are now taking another step toward the improvement of the Park 

area surrounding our Community Hall. We have loaned a portion of our 

acreage to the Interboro Optimists for their "Little League Baseball Club." 

Several boys from Leedom Estates have qualified as members. 

The ball field will be open to all boys of the Community when league 

games are not being played. 

Permits, both state and local, have been issued for an addition to our 

Community Hall and at the present time we expect its completion this year. 

Your Civic Association will ever maintain a constant vigilence in its 

effort to keep Leedom Estates a good, clean and typical American Community.

Leedom Estates Civic Association Auxiliary 

* 

The Leedom Estates Civic Association Auxiliary was organized in 1943. 

It W;lS established for the purpose of achieving better mutual relations among 

the residents of Leedom Estates, securing social and civic improvements, and 

advancing activities dedicated to the general welfare of all residents. And 

all projects and activities since carried on have been aimed toward this goal. 

Members of the Auxiliary will always be found where community service 

or social functions are in progress. The Auxiliary sponsors a booth each year 

for the Taylor Hospital Mayfair; the Leedom Estates Children's Christmas 

Party, the Fourth of July Celebration for the community, the Valentine Card 

Party, and the Community Fair are all co-sponsored by the Auxiliary and the 

L. E. C. A., Inc . 

Girl Scout Troops No. 310 and No. 254, and Cub Pack No. 108 are 

sponsored by the Auxiliary. And with more active participation and interest 

of parents these movements present an open door to wonderful experiences for 

all children. 

Regular meetings are held on the second Tuesday of each month from 

September to June, inclusive, at 8: 30 P.M. in the Community Hall at the end 

of Rodney Road. Dues are $3.00 per year. All women of the Sixth Ward 

are invited to attend-share the enjoyment and join in the endeavor to help 

your Community.

TOWNSHIP 

The affairs of Ridley Township are administered by a Board of Com' 

missioners, composed of six electors, each serving for a term of four years. 

One Commissioner is elected from each of the six Wards, and he serves that 

Ward. 

The Leedom Estates area comprises the Sixth Ward. The Township has 

a population of approximately 17,186 and an assessed valuation of approximately 

~15,l25,000. The Township offices are located in the Folsom Fire 

House, Folsom, Pa., and are open from nine to four Monday through Friday 

and nine to twelve on Saturday. The phone number is Ridley Park 1601.

Ridley Township Schools 

The Ridley Township School District is classified as a third-class district 

by the Pennsylvania Department of Public Instruction. There are five elementary 

schools for grades one to six inclusive and one Junior-Senior High 

School for grades seven to twelve inclusive. 

The Superintendent of Schools, Robert V. Donato, is assisted by a principal 

10 each elementary school and by a principal and assistant principal in 

the high school. There are one hundred and seven professional employees and 

twenty-six other personnel. The Psychologist for the district is Horace 1. 

Millikin. Miss Ada MacDonald is Guidance Director, and Miss Marie 

Sidorsky is Director of Music. 

The total number of pupils in all the Ridley Township schools at the 

beginning of 1951 was about 2500.

To Scouters, Cubbers, and Friends 

Once again it becomes my privilege, through the courtesy of the Civic 

Association, to report to the parents and friends of Scouting in Leedom 

Estates as to the condition of the Scout Troop and Cub Pack. It is my deep 

pleasure this year to be able to say that both organizations are in the best condition 

that they have ever been up until this time. 

In the Cubbing group, some who have served so well in the past are 

about to leave. The Cubmaster, Mr. Robert Shollenberger, after two years 

of constructive work and leadership, will turn over his duties to Mr. William 

S. Blaugher. Mr. Blaugher served as Assistant Cubmaster with Mr. Shollenberger 

for two years, so he is fully capable and trained to take over his important 

new duties in the Pack. Two Den Mothers will leave at the end of 

the season's Program. Mrs. Sanford Slate leaves with two years' service, 

and Mrs. Thomas Kenvin says good-bye after completing one year. Weare 

happy, however, to welcome Mrs. John Burns and Mrs. Stanley Sovitski as 

new Den Mothers. Mr. Fulton Niece, who has served one year as chairman 

of the Pack Committee, was re-elected for another year to this important 

position. In his hands lies the responsibility for the direction of the entire 

Cub Organization. He has performed his duties exceptionally well, and 

should be in a better position in the coming year due to his ground work and 

organizing in the past. 

In the Scout Troop organization there is only one major change. This 

comes in the chairmanship of the Committee, where Mr. William Hunter 

succeeds Mr. Carl Boettger, Sr. Mr. Hunter has been with the Troop Committee 

for two years in charge of camping. His election to chairmanship of 

the Committee is well deserved. Mr. james Young will continue in his position 

as Scoutmaster where he has been so suitably placed. Mr. Young has 

had a remarkably fine record as Scoutmaster, and the boys of Leedom Estates 

are fortunate indeed to have a man of his caliber to lead them along the 

Scouting Trail. Mr. Young is very ably assisted by Mr. Sanford Slate, who 

before being Asst. Scoutmaster, served a year as Asst. Cubmaster. Mr. David 

Darrah will also assist Mr. Young as Explorer Advisor. The Explorer group 

being only for boys in the Troop who are over fourteen years of age. He 

takes over the duties of Mr. Howard Young, who has left our community. 

On the following pages are some fine pictures of the Committees, the 

Leaders, and their boys. These are the boys to whom they are responsible. 

They are commissioned to bring the Scouting program to them which they 

are doing so well. Help them to help the boys of Leedom Estates and 

Stonybrook . 

To those who are relinquishing their duties in Scouting to others, I wish 

on behalf of the "Valley Forge Council" to express its sincere thanks for jobs 

well done. To those succeeding them, and to those who carryon this responsibility 

of developing tomorrow's citizens, I wish to extend the Council's best 

wishes for success in Scouting for the coming year.

Girl Scouts 

The Delaware County Council of Girl Scouts is divided into five districts, 

each with a district chairman and supervised by a professional director. Each 

district is divided into neighborhoods with a chairman in each. Leedom Estates 

is in the Chester Pike District, whose chairman is Mrs. Leighton Stetser 

and whose director is Miss Jane Howland . 

In Leedom Estates we have two Brownie Troops, sponsored by the 

Parent-Teachers' Association for girls from 8 or third grade to 10 or fifth 

grade. Upon reaching fifth grade, the girls fly-up to the Intermediate Troop. 

The Brownie Troops were officially organized in December, 1947. They follow 

the Girl Scout program of activities covering eleven fields and prepare 

to become Intermediate Scouts. They must pass the Tenderfoot requirements 

before they fly-up. Once a year a fly-up ceremony is held when each Brownie 

who has met the requirements receives her wings and is invested into the In- 

termediate Troop. 

Our two Intermediate Troops are sponsored by the Civic Association 

Auxiliary. Troop 310, organized in November 1949, comprises girls from the 

fifth and sixth grades. Troop 254, organized in November 1948, comprises 

girls from the seventh and eighth grades. 

The Intermediate Scouts work on badges in eleven program fields and 

pass certain requirements for Second Class Scouts, usually in the first year. 

The next two years are spent in earning proficiency badges toward First Class 

Scout rating. 

Along with their actual Girl Scout work, the girls do service work for 

the Junior Red Cross, prepare school bags for overseas schoolmates, and visit 

community points of interest to further their knowledge of community life. 

The neighborhood chairman for the coming year is Mrs. Fulton Niece 

and information concerning the various troops may be obtained from her.

The responsibility of the Fire Co. is to protect the lives and property of 

each resident in the event such service is needed, and to give the community 

the best possible service and protection at a minimum of cost. 

We urge each resident to feel free to call at any time service is needed

open and dues are $2.00 per year; applications can be had from anyone of 

the officers.

Leedom Fire Company Auxiliary 

In 1946 a small group of women started an organization known as the 

Ladies' Aid to Leedom Fire Co. In 1948 they became an auxiliary to Leedom 

Fire Co. and also members of the Delaware County Fire Company Aux. 

Thc purpose of this organization is to assist the Fire Company and also 

to help in the betterment of the community. 

Membership is open to any female over 18 years of age. It is not necessary 

to have a member of your family belong to the Fire Co. We invite all residents 

of Leedom Estates and Stonybrook area to join our organization. Dues 

are $1.00 per year . 

We meet on the second Monday of each month except July and August.

Regular P. T. A. meetings are held on the third Thursday of each school 

month. Preceding the meeting, from 7: 30 to 8: 15 P.M. an opportunity is 

given to parents to visit with the teachers and discuss problems concerning 

their children. The business meeting consists of solving problems that effect 

the school as a whole. After the business meeting a planned program is presented, 

then refreshments are served by the Home Room Mothers . 

The Executive Board of the Association meets the second Monday of each 

month.

The Community Council of 


Its membership is made up of representatives from every organization in 

Leedom Estates, including The American Legion Paterson-Hause Legion Post 

No. 168 and Auxiliary, the Leedom Fire Company No.1 and Auxiliary, The 

Leedom Estates Civic Association and Auxiliary, The Boy Scouts and Girl 

Scouts, Parent-Teachers' Association, and St. Mark's Lutheran Church. 

The Community Council of Leedom Estates was organized early in 1949 

for the purpose of combining efforts to improve working relations and interest 

in community affairs. in welfare of needy families, in scheduled money raising 

activities, and in general welfare of youth and their activities. 

Regular meetings are held on the first Wednesday of every third month, 

and are presided over by a temporary chairman chosen every three months 

by the representatives. Mrs, John Read was made permanent secretary, and 

the minutes of Council meetings are open to all members of participating 

organizations.

What We Owe Our Country 

Democratic self-government is a two-way street-with its benefits comes the 

necessity for giving service. 

Why have we come to believe that democracy is a free ride without the 

need for earning our way? Probably the greatest single cause for delinquency 

in citizenship can be traced to our declining sense of responsibility in the home, 

the church, the school, and the community in which we live. Although many 

turn their eyes toward the mountainous issues that crowd our national scene, 

few have the humility to start down where citizenship counts . 

The modernization of our living ha-bits has made too many of today's 

youngsters look upon their home as a shelter, a meal ticket, a refuge during 

their period of adolescence. A family is no longer a group whose members 

depend on one another for companionship. The urge of each individual to 

pamper his own wants has put the emphasis on selfishness and suffocated the 

instincts of good citizenship at the very source. 

Good citizenship under democratic government springs from an apprecia- 

tion of the great values of our institutions and from active participation in them. 

This contest that we are engaged in today over the integrity of the indi- 

vidual versus the integrity of the State is one that can conceivably last to the 

end of our lifetime. Theoretically the odds lie with us. 

A democracy such as ours cannot be defeated in this struggle; it can only 

lose by default. It can only lose if our people deny through indifference and 

neglect their personal responsibilities for its security and growth. 

Our danger lies not so much in a fifth column whose enmity is avowed. 

It lies in a first column of well-meaning American citizens. A first column of 

unconscientious men who are 100 percent American in their daily protestations 

and ten percent citizens in their daily routine of neglect.
