Rapha. The prominent rib of the proslype that passes
from the hile to the chalaze.
Straight, Kapha rectiliiiea, recta. Labiatse.
Winding, sinuosa. Passing along in a serpentine line.

^ Simple, simplex. Passing in a single uniform line,
without any ramifications. Labiatse, Most aurantiacese.
Branched, racemosa. Throwing out branches, on each
side, which usually anastomose, and form a network.

Chalaze.
Chalaza, Umbilicus internus. A mark on the inner skiUf
shoiving where the umhilical cord pierces it : this point is
usually directly u?ider the hile, but sometimes at a distance,
and connected with it by the raphe.
Tubercular, Chalaza tubercuhsa. Swelled out in bunches.
Labiatse.
Cuplike, cupularis. Dilated within the flesh of the seed
into the form of a cup, or such like vessel. Most aurantiacese,
especially Citrus Medica, Cookia punctata.
% Coloured, colorata. Of a different colour than that of
the skin. Citrus Medica.
Not coloured, Incolor. Phaseolus.
Kernel.
Nucleus, Amygdala. The internal part of the seed, con-
tained zuithin the skins, and composed of' an embryo either
alone, or accompanied with a perisperm.
Coated, Amygdala iunicata. Covered with skins very
distinct from the inside of the ovary. Polygonum, OEno-
thera.
Tegmined, tegminata. Covered with a tegmen. ScirpuSj
Heisteria coccinea.
Loricated, lor irata. Covered with a lorica. Eroteum
undulatum, CEnothera.
Naked, 7iuda, sine tunica. Naked within the sides of the
ovar}^ Abietidese, Cupressidese, Taxideas.
^ Free, libera. The surface not adhering to the covera
which envelope it. Amygdalus, Phaseolus, Faba.
