Dear Cattlemen, 

I would like to say thanks to all of you who help to make our Made in Montana Sale a success 

year after year. 

After a year like 2011 it’s nice to look back and be glad it’s over. Last year was the most trying 

year I’ve had in a long time. Whether it was calving in sub zero temperatures day after day or 

trying not to get washed away in the spring floods and then watching it get too dry for the rest 

of the year, or my unplanned 2 week vacation during AI breeding for a broken jaw! Despite all 

of that we were rewarded with the highest cattle market ever seen and heaven knows we needed 

it. 

Here at Prickly Pear there have been a lot of changes around the ranch. We’re finally getting our 

new sale barn done along with some of the new corrals. The cow herd is almost done growing 

with lots of young cows doing the bulk of the work. The bulls seem to be getting more consistent 

every year. This year the calves increased their 205 day weight by 40lbs over last year. 

When you look over the bulls there are a few sire groups that I think really did an outstanding 

job. RC Club King calves showed lots of muscle early on and continued to shine throughout the 

test. SRS Textbook, our senior herd sire, has proven to be a great one for us. He’s a high calving 

ease bull with a lot of growth. We calved Textbook’s first daughters last spring and they look to 

be the right kind. The bull that has been the most consistent sire I’ve used in a long time is Sitz 

Emblazon 9598. These calves do everything right from birth to feedlot, they’re the real deal. 

As I look at what I’ve been able to do with the cow herd and daily operations here at Prickly 

Pear all I can do is say thanks to the Burnham’s for having the patience and the willingness to try 

new things. I think we’re really moving forward fast now. I would also like to thank all of our 

buyers for sticking with us through these times of rebuilding the herd.

#1 is disposition. i see a lot of people now are putting disposition codes in their catalogs. We take 

great pride in the disposition of our cattle, so you can assume they’re all very docile unless noted by us. 

#2 is retaining the growth while improving everything else we all want – calving ease, smaller birth 

weights, moderate frame size, good udders, feet, etc. Growth is one of simmentals best assets. some 

people are concentrating on birth weights so hard they are losing the growth advantage. 

#3: We concentrate more on calving ease and maternal calving ease than birth weights. all the bulls 

in the sale were unassisted at birth. 

#4: We also look at individual performance more than growth epd’s. the epd’s will change if the animal 

has the performance, but the animal won’t always perform just because he’s got good epd’s.

be surprised. every time we have visitors i make them guess and they are usually about 15 pounds 

light!

Dear Friends; 

I’m real excited about finally being in the new sale barn, even if it still needs finishing. Like Troy stated, its been a 

trying year, but we’re being rewarded with record prices. The difference between October and now is even amazing. 

If you look at inventories and exports, it should hold or get better for quite a while. I took a 770 lb cull 

heifer to market last week and she brought over a thousand dollars! It’s too bad our inputs in some areas have 

gone up more than the cattle. 

This young, powerful cowherd impresses us more every year. The heifers in the sale are the best set of heifers we 

have ever offered and wait till you see the bulls! 

Troy has again done a fabulous job with these calves. Like my father, he lives and breathes to build a better cow 

herd. Troy has been collecting carcass and genetic data and is ahead of the curve on genetic defects and testing 

for BVD, etc. He knows the cow herd better than I do now and has been doing all the paperwork, the sire selections 

and the breeding. With his Angus background Troy knows the best of both breeds and can really help if 

you need some ideas on where to take your herd and how to improve it. If you haven’t seen our cow herd lately 

you should stop by and take a look sometime... you’re always welcome. 

Speaking of the best of both breeds, as you know heterosis will give you more pounds at weaning and more average 

daily gain. But, did you know the greatest advantage to crossbreeding is an increase in overall cowherd production 

due to the maternal heterosis. The crossbred cow is 20 to 30 percent more productive in her lifetime due 

to increased longevity, increased efficiency, puberty at a younger age, calf survival rate and increased rate of gain.

the bull buyer will receive full possession, 100% salvage value, and 2/3 semen interest of any bull 

purchased in this sale (unless otherwise noted). this means we are retaining a 1/3 semen interest 

in these bulls. this semen interest is a royalty interest that entitles prickly pear simmental ranch to 

1/3 of the revenues of any semen sold. ppsr retained semen interest remains even if the bull or any 

interest in the bull is sold to a third party. it is the buyer’s responsibility to ensure that ppsr’s interest 

is upheld if semen is ever sold. the buyer must also inform any third party of ppsr’s interest if the 

bull is ever sold. ppsr will not be responsible for expense related to semen collection or promotion 

of any bull purchased, unless a mutual agreement is reached prior to semen collection or promotion. 

our retained semen interest also includes the right to collect semen on the bull at our expense and

actual Scrotal measurements 

We do not believe in adjusted yearling scrotal measurements, therefore, all scrotal 

measurements are actual figures. actual measurements will be taken on January 27, 2012. 

all bulls under 30 centimeters will be sifted regardless of age. the bull’s testicular size is an 

early indicator of puberty, which is passed on to their sons and daughters. bulls with larger 

testicles service more cows and produce more semen, plus their daughter’s cycle at an 

earlier age and have a higher conception rate. 

all bulls are measured, palpated & fertility tested by clint Hilt, dVm prior to sale. the scrotal 

measurements will be on a supplement sheet along with the carcass data. 

most testicular growth occurs from nine to twelve months of age. remember to consider 

the age of the calf on January 27 th when using these measurements.

SuggeSted management guidelineS for yearling BullS 

We are believers in the use of yearling bulls and feel it is one of the best years of their lives. it’s a time when the bulls 

are easy to manage and their only concern is breeding cows. We have found that yearling bulls that are managed 

carefully during the second year of their lives not only do well, but they will also perform better over time. 

below are some suggested guidelines for the care of yearling bulls: 

1. upon delivery to your ranch, keep yearling bulls separate from older bulls. Feed the yearling bulls a maintenance 

ration of 5-8 lbs. per head of grain and free choice hay. reduce grain feed gradually so they are on straight hay 

or grass 2-4 weeks prior to breeding season. 

2. When possible, try to limit the bulls to 45-60 days of pasture service the first year. at this time, or as soon as possible, 

remove the bulls and put them in separate pastures with plenty of good, quality grass. 

3. it is best to feed yearling bulls separate from older bulls until after their second breeding season. this allows them 

to achieve the growth and strength necessary to compete with older bulls for feed and space. 

you will see the benefits of a little added cost and care of feeding a yearling bull by probably two or three more years 

of service from a well managed and healthy bull.

epds are based upon a deviation from the breed average (above or below) for the base year for the particular trait. 

you cannot compare epds from one breed to another. epds may change from the time this catalog is printed until 

registration papers are transferred.

though epds allow for the comparison of genetic levels for many economically important traits, they only provide a 

piece of the economic puzzle. that's where $ indexes come in - blending epds and economics to estimate an animal's

all-purpose index api: evaluates sires for use on the entire cow heard (bred to both angus first-calf heifers and 

mature cows) with the portion of their daughters required to maintain herd size retained &the remaining heifers & 

steers put on feed & sold grade and yield. 

terminal index it: evaluates sires for use on mature angus cows with all offspring on feed and sold grade & yield. 

using api and ti: First determine which index to use, if you're keeping replacements use api, if not, ti. then just 

as with epds zero in on the unit difference between bulls. (as described above, index units are in dollars per cow exposed). 

the difference can be used to determine how much a bull is worth compared to another. For examble, when 

buying an all-purpose type sire, you can quickly figure a bull scoring +100 for api is worth an extra $6000 over a 

+50 bull if both are exposed to 30 cows over 4 years ($50 difference x 30 Head x 4 yrs. = $6000). For percentile

unsatisfactory. seller will replace the bull of equal value agreed upon by both parties or 

return purchase price. 

5. purchaser's risk begins as soon as the bull or heifer is sold. they will be cared for by the 

seller at the purchaser's risk and expense, after sale day. 

6. announcements form the auction block shall take precedence over material in the catalog. 

7. For those who cannot attend the sale, we will honor a telephone order and guarantee 

your phone purchase to meet your request when inspected personally by you. 

8. certificates of registry will be supplied by the seller to the buyer. 

9. delivery - We will assist buyers in coordinating shipments and making the cost economical 

trucking arrangements as possible. 

10. every precaution will be taken to protect the safety of buyers and spectators. However,

12. as we have no control over the acts of God, we cannot guarantee these cattle against 

death loss or sickness. We guarantee cattle to be healthy sale day. insurance is available

papers are in order. 

14. animals purchased and registered by simmental Juniors, 4-H or FFa members will receive
