RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS<br />
Worked and coordinated palynological and biostratigraphical studies on different<br />
Tertiary basins of India.<br />
Made critical taxonomic assessment on Indian Tertiary tricolporate and monocolpate<br />
pollen.<br />
Carried out monographic work on Indian Fossil fungi along with their taxonomic<br />
reallocation.<br />
Carried out studies on highly specialized area, the biopolymer organization under<br />
International Collaboration at Botany Department, Szeged University, Hungary.<br />
Carried out palynological and palynofacies studies under DST sponsored project<br />
‘Environment of deposition and biosrtatigraphy of Early Tertiary lignites of Rajasthan<br />
and adjoining areas’.<br />
Carried out palynological, and biopetrological works on early Tertiary lignite and<br />
associated sediments from Gujarat under intra-institutional collaboration.<br />
Carried out palynological, geochemical and biopetrological works under<br />
collaboration with IIT, Bombay.<br />
Carried out detailed work on taxonomic aspects of Indian Fossil Fungi.<br />
Renovation and addition of displays/ panels in the Museum of BSIP.<br />
Wrote a book containing varied aspects of Geology and Environmental Science in<br />
Hindi language.<br />
A brief account of these works is as follows:<br />
I. PALYNOLOGICAL, BIOSTRATIGRAPHICAL AND PALAEOENVIRONMENTAL STUDIES:<br />
A. Meghalaya Basin and Arunachal Himalayas: Lithostratigraphy and biostratigraphic<br />
works based on palynological studies on Palaeocene–Eocene sediments exposed in Jaintia<br />
Hills, East Garo Hills and West Garo Hills, Meghalaya were done. Palynofossils from the<br />
Tertiary deposits of Kameng, Subansiri and Siang districts, Arunanchal Pradesh were studied.<br />
These investigations confirmed the presence of Late Eocene deposits in Eastern Himalayas.<br />
B. Siwalik sediments of Jammu and Kashmir: Palynological and sedimentological studies<br />
from Lower and middle Siwalik sediments exposed near Nandni in Jammu were carried out<br />
with a view to determine the vegetation and climate of the area at the time of deposition.<br />
C. Andaman and Nicobar Basin: Three road sections of Middle Andaman viz., Chainpur,<br />
Kalunala and Lipak were investigated palynologically. Several levels of these sections proved
productive yielding terrestrial palynofossils and dinoflagellate cysts of Late Cretaceous and<br />
late Eocene-Oligocene ages. Reworked Triassic palynofossils were also recorded.<br />
D. Rajasthan Basin: Early Palaeogene sediments from bore-holes and poen-cast lignite<br />
mines located at different sites at Barmer and Nagaur were investigated. Studies under this<br />
project generated significant information about the vegetation history, biostratigraphy and<br />
palaeoenvironment.<br />
E. Gujarat Basin: Palynological studies were taken up on Early Palaeogene sediments of<br />
Vastan lignite mine, Mangrole lignite mine, Surat and Matanomadh lignite mine, Kutch.<br />
II. WORK ON THE MONOGRAPH<br />
TITLE <strong>OF</strong> MONOGRAPH – “INDIAN FOSSIL FUNGI”<br />
Authors - Dr. R.K. Saxena & S.K.M. Tripathi<br />
Critical taxonomic evaluation of fossil fungal remains from India was done. These studies<br />
were aimed at streamlining the prevailing taxonomic chaos in fossil fungal remains. All fossil<br />
fungal taxa known till 2010 were described along with their text figures, taxonomic details<br />
and occurrences in India.<br />
III. WORK ON THE BOOK:<br />
Title of the book – “Seven Decades of Indian Tertiary Spore-Pollen Floras: A<br />
<strong>com</strong>pendium”<br />
Authors - Dr. R.K. Saxena & S.K.M. Tripathi<br />
Day-by-day it was getting difficult and impractical to keep the track of published papers<br />
related with Tertiary palynology (spore/pollen assemblages) and their applications.<br />
Therefore, the need to assemble and collate the contents of these publications at one place<br />
was felt since long. The book provides an abridged version of all till-date publications<br />
pertaining to palynology from Indian sediments along with the Key-words marking the theme<br />
of each contribution.<br />
IV. WORK UNDER SPONSORED PROJECT:<br />
Work under a DST sponsored project “Environment of deposition and biosrtatigraphy of<br />
Early Tertiary lignites of Rajasthan and adjoining areas” was <strong>com</strong>pleted (January, 2005<br />
to June, 2008). Under this project Palynological as well as palynofacies studies on samples<br />
representing the Akli Formation of Barmer, Rajasthan, and Cambay Shale of Vastan lignite<br />
mine, Surat, Gujarat were conducted.
V. STUDIES UNDER INTERNATIONAL COLLABORATION:<br />
Joint research programmes were undertaken with a celebrated palynologist Professor Mklos<br />
Kedvs of Plant Cell Biology Unit, Szeged University, Szeged, Hungary. These research<br />
programmes were conducted under the Exchange of Scientists Programme between INSA,<br />
New Delhi and Hungarian Academy of Sciences, Budapest.<br />
Highlights of the works under this programme are as follows:<br />
1. Studies on biopolymer symmetry:<br />
TEM studies were made on partially dissolved fossil and extant pollen walls and cuticles with<br />
an object to observe the relationship between quasi-crystalloid and quasi-periodic structures.<br />
An analogy in structural symmetries between biomolecules of sporopollenin and cutine were<br />
observed. Sporopollenin is a substance, which forms a coating on the walls of spores and<br />
pollen grains whereas, cutine is the coating surface present on different parts of plants. These<br />
substances are quite resistant to destruction or oxidation, a characteristic associated with the<br />
arrangement of molecules within the stable and meta-stable structures. Studies have<br />
suggested <strong>com</strong>mon origin of these resistant plant substances. Results of these studies were<br />
published in Hungarian journal.<br />
2. Effect of temperature and organic solvents on pollen morphology:<br />
Pollen grains of twenty Indian Palm species were investigated to observe the effect of<br />
temperature on their morphological features. Pollen grains were subjected to 200 0 C for 1, 25<br />
and 100 hour(s). As a result to this treatment darkening of colour, increase in exine thickness<br />
and change in equatorial and polar diameter in pollen were noticed. These experimental<br />
studies have proved very helpful in elucidating the post-burial history of organic particles<br />
and have also provided trails for the taxonomic assessment of monocolpate pollen<br />
abundantly occurring in Tertiary sequences of India.<br />
