On 24 April 2004 at around 6.30 pm,
two gunmen reportedly shot and killed
former DGP of Manipur, Lairenjam
Jugeshwar at his house at Kwakeithel
Mayai Koibi Chabungbam Leikai Pukhri
Mapal in Imphal. He received two bullet
injuries at his chest and two at his
underarm, and died later at RIMS hospital.
The KYKL claimed responsibility. 86
The Kuki National Front claimed the
responsibility for killing Thangin Kipgen
and his wife Lhingneikim Kipgen, residing
at the Military Colony under the
Kangpokpi police station after abduction
from their residence. They were accused
of having nexus with the security forces in
eliminating important members of the
outfit at their residence’s gate on the night
of 25 October 2004. 87
The Hmar Peoples’ Convention
(Democratic) cadres killed two persons
identified as Thokchom Dinesh alias Raju
of Uchiwa and Ningboi Haokip alias
Chanu of Churachandpur Tuibong Bazar.
Their bullet-riddled bodies were recovered
by police from near Dinwiddiet Bible
College at Khumujamba in Churachandpur
district on the night of 2 December 2004.
They were accused of collecting ransom
from the Hmar people in the name of an
underground organisation. 88
On the morning of 14 December 2004,
one Holkhopao Hangsing of Tingpibung
village was killed by suspected Kuki
National Army cadres after being singled
out from among the passengers of a bus on
which he was traveling from
Yaingangpokpi to his village. The
unidentified gunmen reportedly stopped the
bus near Potsong Lokchao. After checking
the passengers, the militants singled out
Holkhopao and shot him dead before
releasing the rest of the passengers. 89
On 16 December 2004, E.
Vungkholian Paite, former president of All
Tribal Students Union Manipur hailing
from Churachandpur district, and his
companion Gilhlal Tombing of
Churachandpur were shot dead by
unidentified gunmen at the quarter of
Twangzalian Paite, a forest guard
employee, at the Lamphel PWD quarters
under Lamphel police station. Zomi
Revolutionay Army claimed responsibility
for the killings. 90
On 28 December 2004, bullet-riddled
body of a 52-year-old carpenter identified
as Ginjakhen of Ngaljang village under
Singhat Sub division was found in a paddy
field located between Khuga Turel and
Lalnga Khong south east of
Churachandpur police station. The Zomi
Revolutionary Army claimed
responsibility and accused Ginjakhen of
carrying out anti-party activities. 91
ii. Torture
On the night of 4 April 2004, five
youth were reportedly thrashed by around
20 armed opposition group members.
They were earlier forced to lie prostrate in
a line at a place near Dinwiddie Bible
College in Khumujamba area. The victims
had to be hospitalised at the district
hospital, Churachandpur. 92
