assailants entered the house and inflicted
stab injuries all over her body with knives
and other sharp edged weapons. The
woman bled to death. 121
On 10 June 2004, armed cadres of the
Lashkar-e-Toiba outfit reportedly tortured
to death four members of a family,
including two women and a child, in the
Chakaras-seripheli village of Udhampur
district. A group of 10 AOGs barged into
the house of Abdul Rehman and allegedly
tortured, dragged out and killed all the
family members. The alleged surrender of
one of the family members Farooq, who
was an armed cadre of the LeT outfit, was
reportedly the reason behind the brutal
killings. 122
On 4 July 2004, members of the armed
opposition groups reportedly kidnapped
Mariam Begum from her house in Manoh
village in Doda district and have allegedly
chopped off her ears, nose and tongue. She
was then released to come home on the
night of 10 July 2004. 123 Her brother, Abdul
Latif, an armed cadre of the Harkat-ul-
Mujahideen reportedly surrendered before
the Indian security forces. In retaliation, the
Harkat-ul-Mujahiddeen men reportedly
abducted his father Abdul Mohammed
Ibrahim and sister Mariam Begum from
Mehad Dhar in Doda district while grazing
their cattles. The father-daughter duo were
subjected to brutal torture. They were
beaten with rifle butts, stick and burnt with
cigarettes. While Md Ibrahim reportedly
managed to escape, hapless Mariam

remained in captivity. The AOGs raped her
before cutting her ears and nose off and left
her in the forest to die. An army patrol
reportedly found her and rescued. 124
On the night of 26 July 2004, a group
of four armed cadres of Laskar-e-Toiba
severely beat Mohammad Shafi of village
Daraj under Budhal police station in Doda
district, his son Liaqat, daughter Zareena
and wife Barkat Bi, and slit their throats
accusing them of being ‘informers of
security forces’. Mohammad Shafi, Liaqat
and Zareena died on the spot whereas
Barkat Bi was critically injured. 125
On the night of 20 August 2004, some
unidentified AOGs entered the house of
one Rahim Mir at Ludna under Doda
police station and dragged his daughter
Shazia Bano out of the house. The AOGs
then allegedly shot her dead. 126
On the night of 1 September 2004,
members of the armed opposition group
entered the house of Abdullah in village
Bada Dharman in Kotranka tehsil of
Rajouri district and asked Mohammad
Akram son of Mohammad Abdullah to
accompany and guide them to a safer area.
On refusal by Mohammad Abdullah to
send his son with them, they started
beating Mohammad Abdullah’s wife Billo
and their 10-year-old daughter Maniza
Begum. Later, they shot at them inflicting
deep wounds to Billo and killed Mohd
Akram. 127
On 10 September 2004, members of
the AOGs allegedly beaten up the
womenfolk of Hori Hill Dhok area of
Kotranka in district Rajouri and injured
